  • Hello Gavin!

I`ve got a question, too... I`m thinking about changing from the Pentax K20D to the Canon 5D MK II... Is the Canon the right one or would there be any better... I want to use it primarily as a portrait and landscape camera but also don`t want to spend too much money...

Here in Germany it`s about 2600€ (about £2160) with the 24-70 f2.8 lens and I think that price is O.K. for that camera.

Anyways I`m open for other full frame cameras.

    Greetings from Germany!

  • Thank you for all of the hard work you put into your videos. I am a big fan. Budding new photographer who is trying to learn as much as I can on my own.You are a really good teacher and I would love to hang out with you for a day and soak up all you could teach me.

Your pictures of the most mundane things are really inspiring and touching. thanks again.

  • Your videosare very helpful, you are a great guy! Keep on going, thank you for teaching us!

  • you sound funny...lol..

  • Lovely pictures, very surreal :)

  • Hi gavin, a quick question. how did you mange to get sharp images from a very low shutter speed and also having set the ISO level at 6400, did your images come out grainy? how did you overcome this?

    get video, amazing pictures

  • what shoulder strap you are using gavin

  • @rskmagic Maybe a BlackRapid RS-Sport?I must get one immediately!!

  • He saw he used manual focus.

  • This is a great video....What a great environment to set a good moody kind of tone. The pictures were really awesome! Thanks for sharing!

  • Would you say that the IS was more beneficial to less blurry images than if you had taken the 24-70 2.8 L ?

  • Can't wait to get this camera. What a great demonstration!

  • Nice choice of music. Regards to the cinematographer. And nice pics !

  • "Aah! The guide won't lemme take pictures!"

  • Great shots, as always. If it's possible, a PS-tutorial with these pictures would be nice.

  • very nice photos , i have a question if you don`t mind :

how can i make a StereoGraphic 360 Panorama picture ?

waiting for your next video , good luck

  • What were you using for focus if it was so dark?

  • Very nice photos! I went to the tunnels under Toronto's Casa Loma (I didn't know they existed) and it was a similar atmosphere. Dark, cold, and most of all, very hard to take good photos because of the lighting.

  • Wow, I've lived in Brighton 18 years and never knew what was under my feet. Loved the photographs, well done

  • I love you gavin.

  • Great video, I never would've thought you could get such good photos. But why did you take an F4 lens? Why not a brighter lens like F2 for example? Wouldn't it be easier to get low light shots?

  • Great way to illustrate the rule of turds :0)

  • Hey Gavin what ISO did you use? thanks.

  • @svv21 ISO 6400, if you look at the pictures in the video.. You see exactly what aperture, shutter speed and ISO. :)

  • Why didn't you use a prime with a big aperture? What was your reasoning behind taking an f/4 lens? Sure the 24-105 has good range, but all except 1 photo of yours was taken at 24mm.

Would love to hear the thought process of a professional photographer!

  • @xaznkrnpridex thats is the challenge he was doing

  • I always enjoy your videos, Gavin, whether they're Photo Challenges or Tips. Thank you for sharing.

  • wow .. i was waiting for britney spears

  • Nice work like always.

The only thing I didn't understand is why you took a f4 zoom lens into such a narrow and dark place: Wouldn't a prime (f1.8 or bigger) been the better choice for the sewers?

  • How do you get so low noise level and smooth images with ISO 6400? Is it just pricey camera, or do you remove it during processing in photoshop, or maybe any other secret?

  • @gronki1

well it is a full frame Camera (meaning almost double the surface of a aps-c sensor -> very neat noise performance): That and probably some post processing in PS^^

  • and did you use spot metering in your metering?

  • hey gavin, are your shots processed with increase contrast and sharpening?

  • You are a photography idol

  • Choooo Chooooooo! What's that? It's the GavTrain! :)

  • Hi Gavin i look forward to your "15 min challangers " but you dont do enough , i wish i had 1/2 your talent

  • Great and very helpful video as usually =)

  • Thank you Gavin about these great and very helpful vids.

  • What kind of metering mode where you using?

I really appreciate your videos. Thanks.

  • 3:01 Whoa moment. :)

  • And now, as always after photo challenges, i'd really appreciate a video where you guide us trough some of the post processing you've done. Especially with these dark (i imagine noisy?) pictures.

  • i love this music! where is it from?

  • At the start you say on screen Canon 5DmkII was this the camera you were taking photos with or what the video was shot on?

  • @devonmale69 I took the photos with the Canon 5D mkii, the video was shot on a little Sanyo Xacti HD camcorder

  • wow ur amazing i wanna be like u in the future

thank you for ur helpful videos

    keep it up

  • Very nice! I really hope to see more Photo Challanges from you in the future. They give me very good guide on linking your reality with the framing of the final picture.

    Thanks :-)

  • Gavin...you really must do more of these photo challenges! I get a lot of inspiration from them and learn a bit too. Now I just need to find some interesting places around my neck of the woods to try my hand at a challenge.

  • why havent you took with you a monopod or flash?

  • @dmoosh It was a "mystery challenge" so I had no idea where I was going till I arrived. Not sure they would have let me in with a mono pod and direct flash would have killed the atmosphere (ambient lighting)

  • Let's see you use just the EF 24mm f1.4L II only!

  • Why didn't u use a fast prime lens Gavin, like a 50mm 1.4.

  • @dylken21 It was a "mystery challenge" so I had no idea where I was going until I arrived. The 24-105L has a three stop image stabiliser which, if you do the maths, make its handhold ability equivalent to an f/1.4 lens

  • and why is that a tourist attraction again? lol

  • I do this all the time except without the lights.

  • enjoy your post again. would love to see you give some photoshop tips

  • your eyes sees beyond what can others sees..

  • Were you shooting in AE mode the whole time?

  • @thebluecollargeek Yes, I was shooting in aperture priority mode at all times.

  • Great....I was waiting for this :P

  • There are haunted houses you can go to that aren't half as scary as it was when the lights went out, I imagine!

  • There are haunted houses you can go to that aren't half as scary as it was when the lights went out, I imagine!

  • who operates your video camera

  • Wow great pictures.. The place looks spooky.. its like the setting for a scary movie.. lol

  • Gavin you do manage to get yourself into some of the most amazing places. Lol

  • @Everywhere2 "burst mode" i believe....

  • 1:48 The key tip and I can't make it out! Put it in _____ mode. Sequence of shots. Help?!?!?! Amazingly gorgeous shots.

  • @Everywhere2 burst...

  • awesome pictures Gavin. love 'em all

  • You could have probably gotten way cooler stuff if you were free to roam and not with a tourist party :P

  • i've been waiting for your new vid. yoohoooo!!! Thanks, Gavin. you're the best

  • Gavin i have a question. Im actually gettin the 5dmkII with the 24-105 but ive read some reviews and quite a few people have said theres an error1 thats comes up. Contact error. Have you experienced this? Great vid and photos

  • @DannyO1988 Yes I have. Mind you I had put the lens through 3 years of constant use and abuse. The error was caused by a failed aperture motor. It took 3 month to fix (long story) but has been perfect ever since.

  • one of my dogs farted while I was watching this, it was just like being there LOL . Superb shots Gavin.

  • Nice one gavin,I really enjoy your photo challenges.

  • Gavin, stop being so amazing. You're intimidating me.

  • Nice one gavin,I really enjoy your photo challenges.

  • MKe more videos more often please i love them so much but need more videos even ones you take at home like garden photography love then xx

  • I wished the music was a bit quieter and strggled to hear some of your settings - even though I constantly repeated it .

  • Wow, a challenge indeed. Nice job and I love the split toning effect that you decided on in the resulting images, gives them a sort of vintage style and quite atmospheric as well. Thanks for sharing:)

  • I'd say there was a load of Raw shooting down there lol, If you get me

  • How much noise do you get at ISO 6400? Just for comparison sake, I use Olympus E3 and at ISO 1200, it gives lots of noise.

  • @killsharky the 5d mark II is a full frame, so the noise on that is very good, at iso 6400 is very bearable. plus when u edited in lightroom u can take a lot of the noise away as well.

  • Amazing photos! And an exiting adventure :) By the way, you forgot to give the helmet back :D

  • @PhotoGavin Wasn't the biggest photographic challenge to operate the camera while holding your nose? ;-)

  • they way you compose is very strange to me... i guess i am too repetitive and old fashioned, i have to start thinking in new ways to do it

  • @norman99zx9r Remember that the 24-105L has 3rd generation IS which adds about 3 stops to the "1 / focal length" rule of thumb. So shooting 1/10th @ 24mm with this lens is actually quite doable as long as your subject matter is stationary.

  • loved the pic at 2:24 but as an amateur photographer myself i have a question. Would that particular picture pass (technically) with your shadow in the frame if one has to judge this pic as a critic??

  • Cool photos! Very creepy...I like it :D

  • spotted your daughter with the RAW tshirt nice :D

  • wow! you really can make great pictures out of shit :D really great work as always!

  • @wuddlknuddel Yeah, his photos are amazing. He's an inspiration for me. And speaking of shit - I bet he could make a great photo out of a dog turd in the street. He's that good.

  • watching your videos is always a pleasure. thanks for this one

  • Great video Gavin! Love it.

  • Fantastic shots!

  • A f/4 lens in low light conditions. Hmm, sketchy...

I would have used a f/2.8 or lower if possible

  • I always look forward to your videos :) Great pictures!!

  • As always a pleasure to watch your video !

I think the split toning is the best way to go with those high ISO Photos to reduce the visible noise without loosing too much details.

I'd prefer another color. But anyway, this is your personal taste.

    Great PP as always. ;)

  • why did you bring a lens that only goes down to f/4 to such a dark environment?

  • Did you upgrade finally? 5D MKII....

  • @trevorbatchelor Yes, I upgraded about a year ago... it's a great camera.

  • @PhotoGavin it works great!!!! wonderful pics Gavin. It's always a pleasure watching your vids!!

  • As always - great photos and great post-processing.

  • Amazing. I am looking at the scene you passing through and thinking: dull! Then you take a photo and it looks amazing.

  • Thank you Gavin :)) Love your videos!! All of em ! ;)

  • Amazing you can get sharp photos handheld at 1/10th! I like your PP on these also. Always enjoy your videos.

  • i was wondering bout the color of the photos did they come out like that or did you chanage it in Photoshop or light room?

  • @tomber220 It's called split toning. Basically it's a mono shot but you tone the shadows one colour and the highlights another. Can be done in either Photoshop (Adobe Camera RAW) or Lightroom.

  • @PhotoGavin Can you do a tutorial on it? Pleaseeee :)

  • @PhotoGavin can you do a tutorial on how to do this gav?

  • @PhotoGavin could you make a tutorial :)

  • Very Nice.......I'm am new to the hobby....just bought a Nikon D7000.....there is so much to learn. People like yourself are making it a bit easier.......thanks so much!

  • i love your photo challanges Gavin keep em comming=)

  • Imagine doing this with your old 40D :O

    ISO6400 is just MASSIVE!
