All you need to do know is a couple scales, and shred the fuck out of them to make a stereotypical solo. That gets boring as hell, so instead of doing that, do a solo with great melody and atmosphere that is alot more musically interesting than having fast picking speed.

very true, playing fast is all about practise, making good music is not. everybody can pick fast, but not everybody can play well. that's what you have then, players like michelangelo batio, he plays faster than light but his songs are empty of feeling, and players like wes, with only 2 notes per hour can make you feel in heaven.
