  • gd playing juyst need to emphasis the beat a bit more sorry for the critism

  • Excellent!I love this tune.I'll play fiddle along with you.

  • Next time you're in Oxford, I hope you do!

  • You are excellent! :-)

  • how much does the accordion cost?

  • I'm starting to notice that you use the C row only on many of your videos. Is that just cause of what key the songs are in?

  • The box is in B/C, so most tunes will be mainly on the C row. This tune doesn't actually need any notes from the B row, and I happen to not use any, (B and E are there in the opposite direction to on the C row) but I think it's actually the only tune I know like that.

  • Sounds excellent. Isn't this tune an old Scottish folk song? Cause I've seen the lyrics for it in Scottish Gaelic, but then again Scottish and Irish Gaelic is virtually the same.

  • Nice...

  • I play it different! I've always known it as "MIST COVERED MOUNTAINS OF HOME"

Sent you a sample, otherwise good playing!

You should have a 3 row hohner corona #C G F. Great work, Tony

  • Thanks for taking the time to respond with so much detail! I really appreciate it. Much success to you in your endeavors.

  • Hello! I love your playing. I play a triple row A/D/G diatonic box. I too have been considering the purchase of a B/C Irish style accordion. Now that you've played both the D/G melodeon AND the B/C system, which do you prefer? Do you find one more versatile than the other? Which system do you enjoy playing more?

  • Reply part 1:

The D/G is probably more versatile, especially if you make sure you have the basic accidentals (c nat). You'd have the notes to play 95% or so of Irish tunes, plus "sensible" bases and direction choices for playing tune+basses style (english, french etc).

See Tim Edey videos/recordings because he plays a D/G box quite (he he!) well.

I've decided I'm not really fussed about the basses on the B/C box, so I'm going to pretend they're not there....

  • part 2:

One advantage of the B/C system is that there is less choice about which button to use. Apart from two notes (B and E) you just have to use the one button/direction that's available. The only remaining choice is what finger.

I found playing Irish on D/G hard because there is too much choice! Most notes you can choose the bellows direction.... except for the accidentals (including C nat) which just jump right out.

  • part3:

Also the range doesn't go down very far. And my D/G Mory is pretty heavy for lots of in/out stuff (OK I and I'm not exactly Mr Muscle :)

As to preference - I don't have one. Both are really nice instruments, and capable of a lot to anyone that puts in the effort. Equally, both (and the concertina) feel totally insignificant compared to the depth and beauty of the cello, for example.

  • part 4:

If you really want a do-everything box maybe a three-row C#/D/G (or F#/G/C (which would be generally lower in pitch, which is good) or B/C/F) would actually be good. There is something nice about the half-step tuning of two rows, and to me it feels better having the "accidental" row on the outside of the fingerboard (like my B/C) compared to the inside (my 2.5 row D/G).

Probably the best thing of all though is to pick a system and stick with it... something I've failed to do!

  • Like it!!!! But please ad - melodeon - to your tags, that would make it much easier to find your new videos.

  • Thanks for the comment :) It was a rather impromptu recording whilst sitting in the kitchen...

The problem with calling it a melodeon is that it isn't - at least according to convention (and wikipedia). I call my D/G box a two-row melodeon, because it really is like two melodeons in one instrument (plus a lot more!). The B/C system isn't treated like this when you play it, so seems to deserve a different name...

  • Well that's true, if want to keep it by the book! It was only meant as a friendly tip, ( if you wanted more people to see your videos). Because there are lots of B/C, D/C# and C#/D playing in youtube with tags like melodeon and even diatonic accordeon. Sure I found you, but only because I made a freak search with "accordion B/C". But please keep your videos coming I like them!!!

  • Yup - I see your point and thanks for making it - sorry if I sounded a bit short and defensive in my reply!

  • I really liked that! Thanks! Mrs. GeezerArt
