Correction:Family Ties made its syndication debut in 1987,not '88 like I once thought. Back home in New Jersey,I saw FT on New York-based WNYW Channel 5 and Philadelphia-based WTXF Channel 29.
This is the syndicated version of the season 1 opening montage. I used to see this on WNYW Channel 5 back home in New Jersey. Family Ties made its syndication debut with its fellow NBC resident The Cosby Show in 1988. FT was eligible in 1986 because by then the series began its 5th season and I believe 4 seasons is the minimum for the syndication of a series.
"what will we do, baby.. with....OUR LUST??"...omg!, is that what they are singing? sure the hell sounds like it? Looks like their Lust brought upon them 2 daughters and 2 sons, and a cancelled show. ...sniff.
You don't know how many famous performers (bassists Louis Johnson and Marcus Miller for starters) would work as session players for these studio recordings. This first I do not know, but Louis played bass on the most recognisable version sung by Deniece Williams and Johnny Mathis, the one from (I think) season 2 onwards.
It's quite common for a character to break out on a show and end up dominating it. The most extreme examples are probably Fonzie on "Happy Days" and Urkel on "Family Matters".
President Bartlet on "The West Wing" was originally supposed to be a supporting character but soon took the lead. David Caruso's John Kelly was supposed be the main character on "NYPD Blue", but Dennis Franz as Andy Sipowicz quickly took the lead. Same with Homer Simpson on "The Simpsons" and J.R. on "Dallas".
This show (as you can tell by my name) holds a very special little place in my heart. Haha. I was born during it's 2nd season, so nost of my memories of it are re-runs, but still. Michael J. Fox was such a cutie!!
I used to love this show growin up as a kid....And yeah... much diferent time we live in now...I'd give anything to be a kid again....Things just aren't what they used to be and it can be sad at times. But seeing the show back on t.v and these clips takes me back to a much happier time in my life.Thanx for postin.
Also, for the first 10 episodes of S1, it was Dennis Tufalo and Mindy Sterling that sang the theme's lyrics and not Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams as was the case in all eps. thereafter.
It's beautiful. I love the late 70s/early 80s fonts and the song itself. I love the closing theme too because it's so pretty like Justine Bateman. Damn right, Mallory was really hot! =)
Is Alex truley evil or is he mischieous? Who cares! He charmed the friggin' chicks, man! Go Alex!

Wow, they really improved this song after Season One! Added a verse to it and better singers (Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams).

Grew up with this show in the '80s. Always thought the mom (Meredith Baxter Birney) was very attractive for a mom.

Too bad Meredith is now a lesbian. I'm sure she broke a lot of hearts when she became that.

Another NBC series,Cheers was eligible for syndication debut in 1986 also. But that didn't happen until 1988.

This is actually the syndicated version of this theme. During its original run on NBC, this theme was used for the first 10 episodes.
tvfan06 3 years ago
Michael J. Fox is probably the most recognizable face in the whole cast.
I mean, he did three movies while doing this TV show as well. Well, more like he did one that did so good that a few years later they did two more.

Is it just me or do most 80s theme songs have funk slap bass?
markdeaton 3 years ago 9
The original version of the theme didn't have a slap bass. I just heard this version for the first time and it just blew my mind. yeah

What a pity I don't completely understand
the whole lyrics.(English is not my native

Who could kindly type the lyrics, please?
I'd really love to get it!
Thanks a lot!

Here are the full lyrics in English:
I bet we've been together for a million years,
And I bet we'll be together for a million more.
Oh, it's like I started breathing on the night we kissed,
And I can't remember what I ever did before.
What would we do baby, without us?
What would we do baby, without us?
And there ain't no nothing we can't love each other through.
What would we do baby, without us?
Sha la la la.

In terms of prime-time TV, you bet. We just stick with DVDs pretty much.
