  • THIS...IS...SIMPLY...AWESOME

  • This version by Marvin is unique to the singer and the man he was. It is like America is , love it or hate it . It is a unique country of unique people. Allow people to be who the are as they allow you to be who you are. Peace

  • Greatest American Soul singer of all time!

  • @nohopepope2187 The rules in music are there are no rules.

  • TERRIBLE! brign on faith hill or jennifer hudson...who show true american spirit

  • @chelseasmile17 You're terrible.

  • Oh, that man had a voice made of velvet.

  • The Star Spangled Banner is a very difficult song to sing. It has no rhythm or beat. It is a patriotic song. My hats to anyone who can make it beautiful. Great job Marvyn Gaye! It will stand in history as a great singing of out National Anthem.

  • simply cool...too cool for tv

  • Faith Hill does an admirable job, but Whitney makes my hair stand on end and brings tears to my eyes. What is Marvin doing with the time? Why have those drums and then ignore them? Is he on some kind of medicine?

  • we discussed the BEST renditions at a superbowl party yesterday and this was my choice HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I disagree with the people who say his version is the best . Faith Hill does a better job.I do have to admit he is good, but she is much better. it is not suppose to be a rock song people.

  • never thought of this song as being in a bedroom with a "good" friend until now. Great shit what a musician and singer

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Piss on that, R. Kelly

  • THE COOLEST OF THE COOL!!!

  • isn't that the coolest cat that every cooled a cat.......Marv was the man

  • MARVELOUS MARVIN YEA!! OH SO KOOL,,

  • Kellz version betta

  • Best anthem ever. What an unbelievable dude.

  • I agree that it's good music, but it bothers me to hear someone sing in such a smooth, low-key manner about having just won a battle.

  • @csimmons0varon true, but today its more about the fight to get us here, as we stand today, where somebody has the chance/opportunity/freedom, to put their own twist on it, and it still mean the same thing, isn't that what americas princple ideals, struggles, fight, independence, was all about in the first place......

Nobody can mistaken the national anthem, i dont care what "twist" is put on it, it still is what it is, and represents us all

  • So could this be considered one of the first remixes?

  • he added soul to the national anthem, beautiful rendition of the national anthem, what a talented man he was

  • I can't help but smile every time I see this!

  • Best (any) National Anthem version ever. Truly emotional and thats from someone in Scotland. Luv ya Marvin.

  • He was so incredibly awesome!!! Can anybody sing the national anthem like this?

  • Whitney...Faith Hill...then Marvin. all others need not apply.

  • And then he bounced... wave to the crowd, and gone. There's THIS and there's Jimi. ONE of 'em nneds to be made the official recording. Heard at the Smithsonian, Mt. Rushmore, Yankee Stadium and before each session of congress. MAKE IT SO!!!!

  • you made everything you sang so damn sexy marvin

  • Gaye sings it all different and puts it to a beat. People say this is the best rendition of the anthem ever.

    R. Kelly does the same thing, and everybody starts getting racist and dissing his ass.

    Why?

  • stick with the grapvine Marv

  • @gopher0 what?!! y?

  • best version of all times. smooth. original. all of you that don't like it can kick rocks :) this is what America is all about diversity, uniqueness and originality!

  • yah baby

  • You all comments were funny as heck. It made my day- thanx!

  • Maaannn!!! Marvin has just made patriotism sexy! I don't know whether to go salute the flag or to call the wife and tell her I'm coming home early.

    Do your thang, Marvin!

  • omg, poor world, is this guy's version of the anthem even compared with Whitney's? Sounds like he just came out of bed...

  • must be some Marvin Gaye fans. I am sorry but I don't care for his style. I had heard so many people commenting on how good he is. is this is what people like then that is their business. my fav is Faith Hill. her version is much better.

  • I'm a Canadian, married to an American and living in Los Angeles County. No offense, but I have never been able to get into your national anthem (I'm sure it would cut both ways). But this? Absolutely breathtaking!

  • Awesome! I get pumped when I hear this

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • Absolute goosebumps.

  • What a voice

  • The great part about our Anthem is that it can be sang the way your heart feels it. Trust he felt it and so did everyone else at the Forum that day.

  • who feels it knows it.

  • That's why I love this country.... This is the land of the free and the home of the brave. Marvin Gaye did a great job singing that song. So don't be a hater!!!

  • Marvin Gaye had to be the coolest man in America at that time. Clapping during the National Anthem? Really? Who else could get that kind of response?

  • You can't help but smile when they start clapping at the end.

  • time to make some babies!!

  • This version should be played as a standard in America, fucking blinding.

  • MARVIN TORE IT UP!!! Absolutely everyone else's version drastically pales in comparison.

  • Every time. Every time Marvin gets to the "home of the Brave" part I get goose bumps. Every single time.

  • this version still bring a tear to my eye

  • i like old skool rap & soul but if i had to choose the better one id choose 2 listen 2 marvin gaye over everybody else

  • he is the greatest ever...i listen to him every time im down and he lift me up

  • Thank u brotha633! thatz a shame cuz i went to high school with t-pain. Marvin wuz sumthin beyond special. I know he had child support out da a-- after this yall!

  • 1Munkee (2 months ago) Show Hide +3 Marked as spam Reply | Spam Everyone knows half the women in the crowd got pregnant during this.

You ain't never lied....and those watching it on tv also

  • He made this song sexy

  • and so smooth! Just Beautiful!

  • This is my favorite rendition of the National Anthem. February 13, 1983 Marvin stuns everyone with this incredible performance

  • For over 25 years people have been trying to live up to Marvin's standard of delivering a great National Anthem. I remember watching this in total awe because we had never heard anyone turn this song into "the jam".

  • @mnscgirl9507 This so true!!!

  • Everyone knows half the women in the crowd got pregnant during this.

  • hahaha!

    wtf!

  • @1Munkee ha ha, you're sick, but probally right!

  • @1Munkee lol

  • Goosebumps :)

  • I dont think that this will ever be matched. Its originality and stunning vocals set the standard. Simply awesome.

  • and now we got akon and t-pain. horrible singers.

  • OMG I'm a die-hard Whitney fan...but WOOW this may have to be the best rendition ever of the national anthem

  • what dvd is this taken from?

  • I believe it is only in a news cast.. If it is for sale on a DVD, please let me know, I'll buy two.

  • by far the best version of this song!!!!!

  • Thank you for this video. It makes me feel proud. I will always love Marvin Gaye. RIP Marvin.

  • This version was a little controversial because at that time you had staunch conservatives oppossed to any hint of change. But I loved it and still do. It marked a time in this country that people seemed really free in thought and less pessamistic.

  • Words cannot express the feeling I get when I hear this song. There will never be another Marvin Gaye. He made us really enjoy the Star Spangled Banner for the first time in most of our lives.

  • I know u feel this, it just shows that the national anthem doesn't have to be boring - but if sung with passion and originality it's very powerful. No one can say he was not proud of his country and he had no american flag lapel pin, I felt like I was at a party watching this.

  • Send this to Roseanne Barr and everyone else that makes small the National Anthem. Feel the passion and the pride that this man sings with.

  • Amen.

  • incredible!!!!

  • best ever................

  • what an awesome performance, it gives me goosebumps

  • I so agree, this is one of the most powerful versions of the National Anthem I have ever heard!

  • amazing voice, magnificent interpetation

  • the best performance of national anthem EVER.

  • I was fortunate enough to be at this game in L.A. and it was the height of the Laker era with Magic and Kareem. I was a huge fan, but the one thing I remember about this game was that nobody wanted Marvin to stop singing when he finished the anthem. It was a magical moment in history for everyone there. It broke my heart when he was killed, and I will never forget this moment. Rest in peace Marvin. Your fans miss you.

  • Marvin Gaye was one of those people that could sing about anything and make it sound good!! Not many people like that anymore!! Not many people that can sing the same song 4 times and make sound pretty and distinct from the other version ( I want You) and be high too !! Now that is talent!!

  • Very Special preformance.. Thanks Marvin

  • I get all choked up like a lil' girl everytime I watch this. BY FAR....the best rendition ever. The tempo...Marvin....guaranteed he got some leg that night.

  • That is the best rendition of the Anthem ever! Marvin, you are soul.

  • Because I listen to this Video so much I believe I will now know the words to the Star Spangled Banner...woohoo!

  • Love this video....forever...u go Marvin

  • best ever

  • This is so nice. Marvin is so charismatic, and smooth. Today Johnnie Gill is the next closest thing to Marvin. Johnnie pays tribute to Marvin in a remake of Distant Lover. It's unbelievable.

  • Johnny Gill please !!! Give me a Break

  • 1982 NBA All-Star game, Inglewood CA.

  • no 1983

  • Yes 1983, a typo on my part.

  • Was this for a basketball game? Which teams were playing?

  • It was an all-star game. The best players from each team played.

  • Powerbook!!! The reason this one was posted was because the others didn't finish all of the way through!!!!!!!! Thank you for submitting this version....THE BEST NATIONAL ANTHEM.....EVER!!!!!!!!! TRUE ART, and TRULY PROOF OF HOW SOULFULL MARVIN TRULY WAS!!! RIP MARVIN!!!

  • Thanks Downingjl, I had this version for some years on a disk when my first PC had a hard drive of 6GB and 64 Ram ha ha! It is now 580GB and a Gig Ram, so I don't worry about disks too much now LoL. Think I got it off the now defunct Kazaa site. Anyway it's gud innit ?
