I bought the boxed CBS Masterworks CD Recorded Digitally Satyagraha years ago. A novice I had know idea what a work of art the entire opera is. Best of all it gives the historical background of Mohandas K. Gandhi all with translation and lyrics of the entire opera in Sanskrit, French, English and German! Wow ......I love it
I never thought I would appreciate Glass. I am not sure I would, if I only heard it. But the brilliant interpretation by the incomparable Metropolitan and its soloists gave me a totally new perspective on the music of Glass. Thank you, Met.
@oystermind Yeah, I just saw that today! It fit so well, I didn't realize that it wasn't originally written like that. Very clever on the director's part.
How lucky I am that I still have Philip Glass music that is new and unknown to me, to be able to experience such wonderful and emotional music for the first time
This is amazing man im learning new forms of classical music and new composers everyday thanks to you! This channel has really opened to my eyes of how to create songs as a songwrite myself. Thanks so much!
the problem with glass, although i do love many of his works, is that it is often the same features that are used. i am not too fluent in english but this piece makes me think of his violin concerto (which i find incredible) but here in a way that has less savor. this is not a modern problem actually, see vivaldi... but when you heard something similar from the man, this gets somehow a bit bland.
@HARMONICO101 Thank you so much for posting this. I'm sick of people trying to denigrate Glass just because he doesn't strictly adhere to sonata form or the traditional classical style. Glass's "inspired" works are master pieces in my book. He is expanding the possibilities of classical music without forsaking core classical principles, I am a fan.
@Silverlin212 People don't denigrate Glass because of he "doesn't strictly adhere to sonata form or the traditional classical style". Why would any composer in the 20th century strictly adhere to traditional classical style? Glass's music is almost irreconcilable to composers from the 18th and early 19th century without knowing a bit about composition and music and thats why people denigrate him.
@nbtothepower Amongst the elite snobbery of classical enthusiasts, there was(though largely eroded now) a fairly stedfast anti-minimilistic culture of which Glass was considered king and consequently chastised for. These people do denigrate him because he doesn't fit the mold of 18th-19th century music. The same people have a huge distain for atonal music and anything that breaches too heavily sonata form(most of the 20th century).
Man, what is that picture of?

In the new Met staging the repeated syllable is "ha ha ha". It is interpereted as the derisive laughted directed by the crowd at Gandhi.

@oystermind but it was significantly slower in the Met performance, wasn't it?

@SoldanCro Maybe not significantly, but it was somewhat slower.
