  • I'm 29, from a long lineage of miners. Fauldhead, Barony and Killoch.

I spent months on the pickets (age of two) on my Da's shoulders. I'd be a miner today if it hadn't been for the actions that took place back then. Way to cripple an entire country, Mags.

He never scabbed, and I sure as hell will be a thorn in every side of anyone trying to break the spirit of the folk that keep this country running.

    Nationwide, not unionwide.

Support any action you can. Make them take notice.

  • By the way - anybody kow where 'Scargill' is now and what is HIS standard of living - I suspect he is in the U.S. and living it large ???

    Dave

  • @Creamytash Dont knock Scargill he done more for the miners than anyone, that was his life, and trust me he never lived it large. We would still have pits today if it was'nt for Thatcher and the Notts miners who would'nt come out, and they got fucked in the end.

  • Another comment from an Irish American, I forgot to mention that I an a proud member of the International Brotherhood Of Electrical Workers, Local 567, and support all our Brothers and Sisters who put their lives on the line everyday,I commented in another message that i've only done hard rock tunneling, but the coal miners are the ones with the tough job, Respectfully, Michael Phelan

  • I've only done hard rock tunnels under the ocean, the coal miners have my greatest respect,Michael Phelan

  • why the didgeridoo?

    Kind of an abrupt ending...

  • @ImperialistRunningDo it is not a didgeridoo... It is a small instrument called jew's harp, at least that is how I know it to be called. you are right, the ending is a bit cut short...

  • @owlet1963 A Jew's Harp, you say? Well, I've played both and it still sounds like a "didge" to me, but I've been wrong many times before.

Have a listen and see if you've changed your mind:

Didgeridoo Low B by Sam schroder

    /watch?v=Vly7LLMgPlU&feature=related

    JAW HARP JOHN

    /watch?v=yx0nnZZVnd8

Either way, it's an interesting way to begin a song.

  • @ImperialistRunningDo now you confused me and five more musicians, lol. best way to know would to ask the Dubliners themselves, so we would have the definite answer. You might have a point, though, sure sounds like a didgeridoo... The reason WHY I thought of the jew's harp was that I met a busker once who played this small instrument on a very VERY low level, sounding pretty much like this one in here. so... what do we do now? :)

  • @owlet1963 Well, causing confusion IS the only thing that I'm really good at. ;-)

Wow, if I could play a Jew's harp like that... We get a lot of that instrument here in the Colonies. Bluegrass, Appalachian, etc.

  • @ImperialistRunningDo ..........causing confusion is my main hobby as well, what a coincidence, lol. I actually found a video on youtube where they play the jew's harp on a rather low level, but I cannot track it back, forgot to save it in my lists...

  • @ImperialistRunningDo

I do believe that that is a set of illun pipes. That is spelled wrong I know, but for the life of me I cannot remember how to spell it. Also: Forgive me for accidentialy disliking your comment, I meant to click 'Reply'

  • @sinjin480 Spelled as it sounds. Uilleann pipes. OK, I'd never be able to spell that without my computer checking on me. I sat next to someone playing uilleann pipes and I've never seen such an unlikely object in my life. Pumped up with the elbow, regulators activated with a twist of the wrist... I sat there dumbfounded watching almost the whole time, my tin whistle forgotten in my lap. Everybody said the two of us sounded especially good that night.

But I was talking about the first 5 seconds.

  • @ImperialistRunningDo

Oh, sorry about that, I too am skilled in the arts of confusion. Slainte.

  • nicely sung by Paddy as always.

  • obama is right there along side Thatcher ;; I hate them both....

    \

  • mmm good song :)

  • Thank you for singing this wonderful song. You got lots of talent and proud to hear you singing Rita MacNeil's beautiful song from Nova Scotia .... (too bad it was cut short on this recording.)

  • Solidarity!

  • wer stellt denn so ein schwachsinniges Ding hier rein? :-(

  • Yes skakky it should be 65, but I think this is the Sunfly Karaoke version. This version doesn't make sense. Anyway I love the Dubliners so I'll forgive them :-)

  • @briangascoyne no its meant to be 64 as it rhymnes with door (at the age of 64 he'll greet you at the door)

David Alexanders version does sing it the other way but Rita MacNeils orignal does it this way.

  • isnt it ment to be at the age of 65 i pray 2 God im still alive?

  • The best version by the songstress who wrote the lyrics, Cape Bretons own, RITA MACNEIL..

    WORKING MAN

    watch?v=E-EiwiiAh68

  • Brave men

  • heroes

  • Thatcher warmed her arse on the back. ..s of the colliers while she stoped the free milk going into our kids bellys. Derbyshire NUM . NOTTS SCABS PISS OFF

  • @cbh66

    Never a truer word,RIP N.U.M.,Sutton Manor Colliery.1906-1991.St.Helens miners.

  • @cbh66 you're just a radical blaming conservatives.

  • @cbh66 You do realize that if everyone made $40.00 an hour that it would soon be worth 50 cents. Socialism while a great idea in theory is doomed to failure this has been proven over and over again.to be unworkable.

  • @cbh66 The scabs as you call them, didn't deserve to be killed !! It was about time someone stood up to the unions, they were holding the country to ransom, behaving like animals, who in their right mind bombs a person driving to work on the motorway? We now need Cameron to stand up to these yobbo union leaders about now. 2011. These parasitic union leaders are living a life of luxury, paid for by the general public & taking [ to use one of your words ] the PISS out of us all!!.

  • @cbh66 well said friend yorkshire NUM from the first to the last no surrender

  • Great song, but unfortunately working under ground only leads to ill health in later years, especially coal mines.

  • my grandmother's family owned coal mines in ky.

  • Very sad it's truncated. The great instrumental part is missing...

Paddy, we miss you - won't you join the lads for the "50 Years on the Road" tour in 2012?

  • lovely, tks.
