The people who are narrow minded are those who don't want to listen to the positive side of corporal punishment because they believe that it is all bad, and no good can come from it. I'm telling you, elementary school kids would behave more appropriately and not try to run amok if there was even the legitimate threat of a swat or two on the bottom with a paddle. When I was in school and corporal punishment was used, there was never a "spanking fest." Most kids feared the paddle and respected authority, and it wasn't used primarily on black or Hispanic students, and I live in a community where such students make up more than 25% of the student population. The problem in the classrooms in states where corporal punishment has been outlawed is that children tend to run amok and do whatever they please because they know that with no corporal punishment, there are no real consequences for their bad behavior. When teachers were able to temporarily stop class and remove the disruptive child long enough to administer a "swat" with the paddle, they had more control of the classroom.

In psychology it is the modeling theory, this means children can model certain behaviors by observing others perform the same behavior. One of the great examples is the Bobo doll experiment where a group of kids saw another kid hitting the bobo doll with a bat and when they got into the playroom, they follow what the kid in the video did. So, let's let's take it to corporal punishment, if children observe adults hitting them, it is safe to assume that they will model that same behavior.

I was wondering since that is discrimination, couldn't you challenge it on the grounds of Title 9?

Also, whenever I talk about this issue, I always bring up this issue:

If I hit my dog, I'd been in jail for animal abuse.

If I hit another adult, I'd been in jail for battery or yet, attempted murder.

Why then is hitting children an exception of the rule?

You also bring up a good point that it teaches children to return violence with violence, but if I may, add on to that?

I know of a person in jail for abusing their parrot! I have a lawyer in Wash DC ready to take on the first Title IX case. Girls are unaware that they can use this law for protection. Help me spread the word. If anyone knows of a girl paddled and is willing to inform her and direct her to me, like I said, I have a lawyer standing by. Her case will be the "Rosa Parks" case in paddling discrimination. Hope you will help me with one, GC777.

Dear CoiledClock,

People have so many great options for solving

problems without violence. Options that could

actually bring them closer together. Teachers of all people are the best ones to model these choices. It's rare to find someone in prison who was not beaten as a child. Those statistics are available. If hitting works, I think we could shut down the prisons, since hitting makes one "turn out okay."

If a survey was done of the 2 million prisoners in American jails and prisons the majority would probably say they were hit as kids by their parents or in school so clearly its not the solution

There are european countries which have total bans on spanking/hitting (even by parents) yet manage to have a more civilized society than in the USA or here in Britain

recently in the UK we have seen major reforms banning all corporal punishment in schools and stopping parents using weapons to hit kids
