The child does not have schizophrenia. She is the victim of very serious abuse. At this age, there is no reason she should feel compelled to announce "I see puppies." Schizophrenia is *not* caused by abuse. In children who have been seriously abused, you don't see psychotic symptoms, instead you see things like conduct disorder, severe depression, phobias of various things, sexual acting out (only with sexual abuse) and/or difficulty with relationships (never trusting or trusting too much).
The idea that schizophrenia is related to child abuse was disproven in the 70s. Even if Jani Schofield was abused, it didn't cause her illness.

There are no symptoms of schizophrenia in the baby videos: just a normal baby looking around the room.

When they beg online they talk about needing money for rent or gas and electric bills or cellphone bills - I have never seen a post asking for money to pay for anything medical related. If these people were really doing "everything they can" to help Jani and her brother they would be modifying their diets to ebb their symptoms. There is no way in hell would I ever purchase that book. In fact I am writing to the editor pleading for them not to publish the book of a child abuser. Basically what I'm saying is that they ALSO need support. Jani needs support. The other kids who are sick need support. And the parents need it as well. Some parents have wonderful kids and abuse them, some have terrible kids and are angels with them... I know that.

The support that these parents need is not MEDICAL support but help with parenting their children. Jani seems to have been a physically healthy baby who was not settling into sleep because she did not have the security of an emotional bond with her mother. 0:48 Watch how Susan Schofield doesn't respond to the baby's cues but simply talks to her like a pet dog. Two-way mother-baby preverbal conversations are essential to a child's development.
@Isisbridge I was thinking along those lines. :) It takes a community to raise a child. Society's got this strange separation where as once mothers generally assisted each other... babies like Jani would have been cared for by a number of mothers, because her mother needed help.
They went to parenting classes before Jani was born. When she cried, they'd go through a checklist of things that might be wrong (like checking off possible problems with a faulty car): is she wet, is she hungry, does she need stroking... (and if none of that works, then give it a shake). Susan Schofield doesn't seem to have had a mother's natural affinity to tune into her baby's needs, respond to her expressions and mediate her different states. Result: autism in both children.
@Neithie Many parents go through sleep deprivation and many parents get little to no support. I speak from personal experience as a parent to multiples with no real extended family. You bet it is torture but it STILL does not excuse what they have done or justify it in any way. If you cannot deal with your child then you need to do whatever it takes to keep that child safe. It's been 9 years and the one who has suffered the most is Jani.
What I am seeing is nine years of intense and constant emotional, physical and mental stress on parents who lack support from their extended families. This doesn't mean they can abuse their child, I would take the child away at the slightest hint of it, but it shows that there is something very wrong with the way a community supports a parent who has a sick child. The stress of a parent will reach the child, sick child or not, and it will start a spiral downwards...
and they STILL have to hold it together and if they cannot and result to abusing their kids then they should not have those kids. We as a community need to first stop enabling abusers to abuse. When you become a parent it is a gamble and if you aren't willing to accept whatever comes then don't take the gamble. I am all for community support where it is available and agree there needs to be more of it but enabling is something all together different.

@Neithie These are not accusations. They are reiterations of admissions of the actual abuse. I frankly am not worried about the stress of the parents I am worried about what is happening to the kids. The abuse should have been acknowledged long ago and wasn't. It needs to be now. In the schofields case, they are not people who have any business advocating for children or families when they have taken no responsibility for their actions. People need to know and these kids need protection.

If Jani is schizophrenic, it is was very likely caused by the, in my opinion,abuse and violence she suffered at the hands of her own parents, starting with her father screaming at her and shaking her with "impotent anger" when she was just 2 mths old because he was unable to get her to sleep. Both parents have admitted to hitting Jani / the father has been very violent in front of Jani. @Rowan07001484 There is actually plenty of proof that Michael is a child abuser - all one has to do is relook at the MRI of her brain that shows the ischemia of her thalamus that was likely caused by him shaking her as an infant. The FACT that they did not disclose ANY of the abuse to drs when Jani was being evaluated for psychiatric illness speaks volumes.

well they have now. and they did seek medical advice. doesn't seem to me like the actions of a man who violently attacks his daughter on a regular basis. I understand that he had problems, and shook her as a baby. which is a terrible act,of course, and was aggressive within the home towards his wife.

The child does not have schizophrenia. She is the victim of very serious abuse. At this age, there is no reason she should feel compelled to announce "I see puppies." She would not have any inkling that others do not see them. Yet this comment expresses that she assumes others do not see them. She is clearly playing into the role her parents have created for her. They are extremely mentally ill.

Schizophrenia is *not* caused by abuse. In children who have been seriously abused, you don't see psychotic symptoms, instead you see things like conduct disorder, severe depression, phobias of various things, sexual acting out (only with sexual abuse) and/or difficulty with relationships (never trusting or trusting too much).
The idea that schizophrenia is related to child abuse was disproven in the 70s. Even if Jani Schofield was abused, it didn't cause her illness.

What are those parents sacrificing? They're sacrificing their own child. Because it makes THEM feel better to think of her as having an "illness" rather than accepting the fact that they haven't made a very good job of bringing her up. And they're abusing her by giving her massive doses of drugs that are damaging her brain and may even kill her. This is Munchausen's by Proxy. There are no symptoms of schizophrenia in the baby videos: just a normal baby looking around the room.

Jani was first admitted to the psych ward when Susan was postpardum depression and full blown bipolar. Jani's behavior is refelcetive of a child trying to escape and survive her abuse. But the reality is her father has been continually abusive and violent. Both of them not adequately treated for their own MI's. I know that was weird. I don't know, but maybe they made her this way. by assuming she had something wrong at the start. By saying things like. "Do you see something..." "do you hear voices?" maybe they reinforced the idea in her head. not intentionally.

Maybe Jani doesn't have schizophrenia, but with this new book and the implications of it with the father editing out the abuse, it could be possible the parents have Munchausen's. How is it they cannot see the damage they are doing to their own daughter? Or don't they care? Jani in a more damaged state leads to more attention. She can be healed, but it won't be by her parents or by the current system using labels and drugs.

perhaps Jani will write one in ten years time and it will be interesting to see her take on things, compared to her parents. plus the book will help raise money for her. they don't spend it on drugs and drink I assume, but on the horrendous bills they have to pay for her care.

@Rowan07001484 Actually, the money the parents get by begging on the internet goes towards rent, 2 internet cellphones and cigarettes, along with all the junk food they give Jani because they claim thats all she will eat. I have never seen them say they need the money for med expenses. In fact the parents claim they should not have to justify what they use the money for at all. This can verified by reading the dads blog at janisjourney(dot)org as well as Susan Schofields various facebook pages

When they beg online they talk about needing money for rent or gas and electric bills or cellphone bills - I have never seen a post asking for money to pay for anything medical related. I bring up the food because fast food and junk food is expensive, let alone extremely unhealthy,

@zolt17 Also junk food has also been proven to affect children neurologically. If these people were really doing "everything they can" to help Jani and her brother they would be modifying their diets to ebb their symptoms. The Schofields aren't interested in doing anything other than medicating them to be more obedient. They can't be bothered with a GF/CF diet that might help both Jani or Bodhi.

It will be a hard thing for her to deal with realizing how much her father has abused, manipulated and lied, how he has used her to get sympathy and attention and money when what he should have done a long time ago is find better care for her, put Susan in a psych ward and turned himself into the police.

There is no way in hell would I ever purchase that book. In fact I am writing to the editor pleading for them not to publish the book of a child abuser. There really is no good reason to buy this book. The story can be read for free on his website. Any money gained from it would only go to further support the parents agendas of exploiting Jani.

He is now using the publishing companies word restriction as an excuse for not be honest about the whole story. I like her parents but the more I look into her case from the pov of a mental health worker, the more the red flags are popping up... the father himself HAS admitted abusing her.
I don't think that he and her mum are bad parents, not necessarily, but if she is going to heal then he has GOT to start talking. For Jani's life.
And hell, it'll make a great sequel to his next book. ~_~

@beautifulmind546 The problem is that there's no medical support for parents who are going through a crisis like this. None. If the kid is making enough noise and fuss then they'll happily drug the kid up but there's no resources to assist the parents of a mentally ill child. Hell, there isn't enough resources for the kids...
This does not justify what is being claimed of them here... but the problem is massive. How should we as a community support the parents of a child who is mentally ill?

Basically what I'm saying is that they ALSO need support. Jani needs support. The other kids who are sick need support. And the parents need it as well. Some parents have wonderful kids and abuse them, some have terrible kids and are angels with them... I know that.

@Neithie First of all I did not claim that all the parents of JF abuse their kids but there has been admissions from one parent and then multpile other parents enabling that abuse which makes it likely there are more. And basically what I am saying is ALL parents need support and not all will get it. Not getting the support does not make it more acceptable or understandable to abuse the child.

@beautifulmind546 What I wonder is, right at the start, when Jani was a baby, what could have been done to support the parents when it was obvious that Jani was not going to sleep well. Yes, being a parent is tough, but sleep deprivation isn't 'tough', it's literally a TORTURE method ... not to mention the loss of your partner, and the breakup of your marriage, and not being able to sit down with your loved one for half an hour...

The support that these parents need is not MEDICAL support but help with parenting their children. Jani seems to have been a physically healthy baby who was not settling into sleep because she did not have the security of an emotional bond with her mother. 0:48 Watch how Susan Schofield doesn't respond to the baby's cues but simply talks to her like a pet dog. Two-way mother-baby preverbal conversations are essential to a child's development.

@Isisbridge I was thinking along those lines. :) It takes a community to raise a child. Society's got this strange separation where as once mothers generally assisted each other... babies like Jani would have been cared for by a number of mothers, because her mother needed help.

They went to parenting classes before Jani was born. When she cried, they'd go through a checklist of things that might be wrong (like checking off possible problems with a faulty car): is she wet, is she hungry, does she need stroking... (and if none of that works, then give it a shake). Susan Schofield doesn't seem to have had a mother's natural affinity to tune into her baby's needs, respond to her expressions and mediate her different states. Result: autism in both children.

@Neithie Many parents go through sleep deprivation and many parents get little to no support. I speak from personal experience as a parent to multiples with no real extended family. You bet it is torture but it STILL does not excuse what they have done or justify it in any way. If you cannot deal with your child then you need to do whatever it takes to keep that child safe. It's been 9 years and the one who has suffered the most is Jani.

What I am seeing is nine years of intense and constant emotional, physical and mental stress on parents who lack support from their extended families. This doesn't mean they can abuse their child, I would take the child away at the slightest hint of it, but it shows that there is something very wrong with the way a community supports a parent who has a sick child. The stress of a parent will reach the child, sick child or not, and it will start a spiral downwards...

and they STILL have to hold it together and if they cannot and result to abusing their kids then they should not have those kids. We as a community need to first stop enabling abusers to abuse. When you become a parent it is a gamble and if you aren't willing to accept whatever comes then don't take the gamble. I am all for community support where it is available and agree there needs to be more of it but enabling is something all together different.

@Neithie These are not accusations. They are reiterations of admissions of the actual abuse. I frankly am not worried about the stress of the parents I am worried about what is happening to the kids. The abuse should have been acknowledged long ago and wasn't. It needs to be now. In the schofields case, they are not people who have any business advocating for children or families when they have taken no responsibility for their actions. People need to know and these kids need protection.

@beautifulmind546 I don't disagree with you that first and foremost, the children need the protection, and if a child has the SLIGHTEST hint of being abused emotionally, sexually or physically, they need distance from the parents. No question.
It just highlights, for me personally, the massive flaw with the mental health system for children... that it only deals with the children and even then, very reluctantly.

She is making a point of mentioning that her show is UNCENSORED BY THE FCC despite her, Michael and the Jani Foundation working at censoring anything that speaks about the abuse of Jani.
