In my country there are pedal-buses - you buy a ticket, you get in, take a seat and you have to pedal to get to the destination - there's a supervisor with a batton who warns you if you don't pedal hard enough.It sucks if there are only a few people in the bus because you have to pedal really hard!
@ramases1- it's not that hard to see why it's unsafe. It is going 15km/h on city streets where the speed ranges from 40-60km/h. If someone crashed into them they would obviously suffer injuries- because they are in an UNSAFE vehicle. That is what the cop meant by being unsafe. Being charged with that doesn't only mean it is unsafe for other people but for the occupants themselves. So next time you go insulting cops think first.

When does training or idle recreation take precidence over commercial use of a highway? The driver of the large vehicle is unable to pass until a straight piece of hiway.

the safety concern is due to large missing portions of the cars fundamental structure. not only to accommodate the pedals and chains, but also for weight savings. Trust me, even minus it's factory powertrain a 1986 buick is not light.
While I do appreciate this stunt, and think it was mostly harmless and good fun, the cop has a valid point as well. He seemed very professional about the whole thing too, presenting it in a practical, problem-solving way. It definitely says good things about Toronto police's ability to interact in a good way with citizens. It's good to be permissive and allow for some measure of adventurism in society, while making sure that such doesn't turn into irresponsibility.

A bicycle presents a narrow profile, and there's a responsibility of the cyclist to maintain situational awareness and present a minimal-impact movement just as there's a responsibility of drivers to give cyclists adequate space and follow rules of the road just as cyclists are expected to.
That in mind, they did seem to try to minimize the impact of their adventure, choosing roads with multiple lanes and keeping clear. Having it towed was the best resolution, because one knows what to expect from a tow truck. I just hoped that they had to pay for the towing; doubtless they knew of the high potential of having to do such before pedaling out.
No, no-one involved will be tasered, maced or flung in prison, since this was apparently Canada, were there's a modicum of reason to things despite it's close neighbour. In my country there are pedal-buses - you buy a ticket, you get in, take a seat and you have to pedal to get to the destination - there's a supervisor with a batton who warns you if you don't pedal hard enough.It sucks if there are only a few people in the bus because you have to pedal really hard!

@ramases1- it's not that hard to see why it's unsafe. It is going 15km/h on city streets where the speed ranges from 40-60km/h. If someone crashed into them they would obviously suffer injuries- because they are in an UNSAFE vehicle. That is what the cop meant by being unsafe. Being charged with that doesn't only mean it is unsafe for other people but for the occupants themselves. So next time you go insulting cops think first.

@snowstormcan, have you never been on a narrow winding mountainous road with bicyclists out for various purposes from recreation to training for some competition and see a larger vehicle such as a truck or bus that pays huge road tax be forced to idle at ten MPH because these cyclists have been told they have some rights? When does training or idle recreation take precidence over commercial use of a highway? The driver of the large vehicle is unable to pass until a straight piece of hiway.

@claztube The cyclist has as much right on the road as any truck or bus and if the drivers don't like it they need to stop driving. All legal traffic must share the roadway including cyclist, horse drawn buggies, and vehicles of husbandry. In case you don't know what a vehicle of husbandry is it is a vehicle used to earn a living such as tractor, combine, etc. If you can't share the road PARK YOUR TRUCK AND GET OFF THE ROAD!

I could see if it was on the sidewalk or on a closed course but they dont even have brake lights or turn signals. Theres a reason things need to be street legal before they are allowed on the street. While I do appreciate this stunt, and think it was mostly harmless and good fun, the cop has a valid point as well. He seemed very professional about the whole thing too, presenting it in a practical, problem-solving way. It definitely says good things about Toronto police's ability to interact in a good way with citizens. It's good to be permissive and allow for some measure of adventurism in society, while making sure that such doesn't turn into irresponsibility.

The safety factor he is talking about is very valid; just as a slow-moving car presents a potential hazard, so does this vehicle. It presents a risk by being a unexpected new element in the driving task. A bicycle presents a narrow profile, and there's a responsibility of the cyclist to maintain situational awareness and present a minimal-impact movement just as there's a responsibility of drivers to give cyclists adequate space and follow rules of the road just as cyclists are expected to.

That in mind, they did seem to try to minimize the impact of their adventure, choosing roads with multiple lanes and keeping clear. Having it towed was the best resolution, because one knows what to expect from a tow truck. I just hoped that they had to pay for the towing; doubtless they knew of the high potential of having to do such before pedaling out.

It's really a nice idea, but I think the cops had a point about the safety factor of it... They did their job and did what they should do and that's what matters.
