Lincoln Chafee should try to run again in 2012. I think he'll be satisfied with the new GOP leadership (Michael Steele, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, etc.), albeit more conservative than he is, all of them are more inclined to help grow the party, eventhough they want a more fiscally conservative party.
Oh, I don't think so. Once it gets back its fiscally conservative footing and restores it's reputation, the GOP should be able to compete for senate seats in New England that are opening up like Kennedy's. The GOP also has a lead over Chris Dodd for 2010. The GOP also has a lead over Barack Obama's old senate seat, which is historically a Republican seat anyway.
How can it reach out to moderates without upsetting the dogma of it's base?
All of the new talking points I'm seeing from Capital Hill Republicans is just a return to same old dogma AND in the middle of an economic crisis with no tangible solutions... the GnoP :D
Well the base will accept Republican senators and congressman that are socially moderate and fiscally conservative, however it will not accept big spenders like Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Specter. Linc was actually kind of a big spender and that will not be tolerated, because fiscal conservatism is the core believe of the Republican Party. There are moderate congressman like Mark Kirk, Judy Biggert, and some others from Kansas and California that are very popular with the base.
@xaviqaz Yeah. I made those comments a year ago before he launched his independent campaign for governor. Many had thought he'd run in the RI GOP primary, but then he staked out all of these hard left positions. He truly is not in anyway a Republican anymore. He's not a fiscal conservative at all. It really is disappointing how someone can just freak out the way he has.
From what I've been reading up on he seamed genuine. He is the kind of republican we needed in Washington. Too bad Bush and his cronies dragged Chafee down on the sinking GOP ship.
Republicans provided begrudging help for Chafee because they knew that he was the candidate most likely to win Rhode Island and keep the Senate majority for the GOP.
Lincoln Chafee for Green Party Governor

Republican Chafee for Governor.

Not sure if you understand Rhode Island or how moderates and progressives feel badly treated by the GOP.
Rhode Island needs a viable SECOND party and the ship has sail for the GOP.

I think the GOP has already burned all it's bridges with moderates, progressives and rational thinkers in the party.
