@yemonja100 In my opinion, Kit tries to be a traveler, like Port, instead of being half-tourist, half-traveler... I intend to post something about the movie on my blog in a cpl of days, I could give you a link then :).

@niewadzibridge Thanks, I would greatly appreciate that. I want to understand, I really liked the movie and the book. And was very jealous of Kit, I really liked Port as a person. I seem to never miss home and continue to wander and wander on without realizing other people's nostalgia for a past and present so central to themselves. Looking foward to your blog, thanks!
It as a good movie. Of course it isn't the book. Read some Jane Bowles and read about her, much more interesting than Paul. Let's assume she had something to do with it (as subject).
"Down" is a rather charitable choice of words. My life has never been a bed of roses and after this film ended I remember beating my fists on the ground for several minutes because it was so depressing. Paul Bowles was an interesting sort of chap and his take on the human condition is dreadfully depressing!
Fascinating! Beautifully written by Bowles, fantastic Bertolucci's direction, and Winger, Malkovich, Scott fabulous performances. Yes, I agree with someone else's comment "...she should have won an Oscar for this"
Book is just great ...only Bowles from his own living was able to write such a fantastic novel, savour of north Africa , Tanger in the early 30 is so real...
The trailer makes the story seem like its all about kit and her erotic infidelity when it really isnt. I guess they just figured that it would draw more people to see it. whatever
I adore this based on true events movie - brilliant acting, story line, everything. Debra Winger was trully amazing. John Malkovich and Campbell Scott were great as well.
I've read the book lately and seen the film last night. Both are fantastic, but Debra Winger was a bad choice for the role. She's a tall brownie, but Kit Moresby in the book is a little blonde.
One of the best movies I ever saw, travelling across Morocco I saw many phantastic sceneries taking my breath away. Someone who hasn't visited the country doesn't know, once you've been in the Sahara you'll be never be the same...Music is also astonishing.
Personally speaking, I think this trailer does an accurate representation of the film. I saw it, and was VERY disappointed, especially in the casting. I didn't think that either Winger or Malkovich were good choices for the characters;especially the way the characters were originally drawn in the novel. Malkovich is so mealy-mouthed in this film that it's almost an embarrassment to watch him!
i am not so sure this trailer does this movie justice. it is an excellent film, but this trailer makes it look corny. perhaps this trailer was deemed acceptable do to the time period, but today i dont think people would have given it much thought, other than John Malkovich is in it. He is such an excellent AND interesting actor!!!

I adore this film!!!!!!

What a total misrepresentation of such a complex piece. It has far more to do with a schizoid existentialism than a source of softcore porn.

Is it a good book? I've read a book of Paul Bowles' wife, Jane, and loved it! I think she models for his wife in the sheltering sky

Bowles himself hated this film. read the book instead.

I have and it is equally depressing. I read "Metamorphsis" the day I was dumped by a long term girlfriend--- talk about being double whammied!

This trailer is awful! I'm in the middle of re-reading the book but I've yet to see the movie. I wonder if I should even bother with it.

This superior film stands on it's own merits. The trailer does not do it justice.
Can you imagine this film being made, and widely-released, today... in the age of CGI? I think not.
