I notice that he has a very straight legged stance, that seems different from what I'm used to seeing, I'd think in an art like this where movement is so incredibly fast, one would want a stance with a lot of balance. Does he keep his legs so straight because it's just a video or is there a reason?
@kyokaido99 Yep. He is a very good instructor. He is a former police officer(SWAT Team). He travels internationally, and trains law enforcement, and military.
He teaches Doce Pares, as well as Krav Maga-type of martial arts. He also teaches a firearms/security class. Oh, and a bicycle safety class.
At Tom's level the ability to use your thumb to grab while checking is a simple task. Keeping the index finger open allows for mor rotation in th wrist. I'm sure he teaches his students to hold a knife tight with all fingers. You need to take into account the skill level of someone whose videos you watch. Not compare it to your present level of awareness.
Eskrima could be effective if you use other forms of marshal arts w/ it, such as aikido, judo and other arts that is aimed at close quarter combat.
pekiti tirsia kali is the most efective eskrima type of marshal art, its aim at disarming and killing your oponent... its used by the Philippine Army, specifically the Marines.
@ lasalle1alpha: If your Eskrima trainier teaches Panantukan/ Dumog beside your weapons training you do not need another art, but training in a second art is always good, widens your horizont. And yes Pekiti Tirsia is good, so is Sayoc Kali, so is Silat Lincah, so is Lightning Scientific Arnis or Doce Pares and so on. It is mostly how you train, not what you train.
This is an introductory segment. Of course GM Sipin can negate the rear hand - it is inherent to the FMA. Watch the whole series (better yet, BUY the DVD), train with GM Sipin in the FMA, train it for several years, then re-assess your perceptions. GM Sipin has extensive "real world" experience thru law enforcement. His technique and ability is unquestionably outstanding. His sense of humor is often dry, but no one is perfect.
yes this is typical of a lack of understanding of the dynamics on two weapon tactics if you block and check in this fassion you are very dead . you cannot block and check here onless you have already damaged your opponents rear hand can tyou see?
Sorry but I have watched a whole series of his DVD's and they are top class, you have to also remember these are aimed at people who know nothing of the FMA, I can attest personally to GM Tom's credentials and his skill.
I am not taken in at all, I know Tom personally and have seen him in action and I have seen many other top class Masters from numerous styles and he is up there with them. If you dont like a particular style, simple solution is dont do it, but just because you dont like it, does not mean it is wrong. Best regards, Pat O'Malley
