Well I ate there last week and the pizza was incredible. All the lights were out when we arrived and they had to turn the lights on for us. One of the private areas was being used but the place was deserted. Three stars, love the atmosphere.

They look like canned olives to me. That would explain why they look quite black and not so fresh. It would be logical if they were canned too because North Korea would only be able to import canned olives because they are not grown in North Korea or China, so North Korea would have to import them from other countries through China.

I've read somewhere that Kim Jong-il personally ordered this restaurant to be opened. Apparently, he was in some kind of mood in which he was crazy about Italian pasta, just like he was crazy about Hollywood movies for a while. You know, "boys with toys" as they say. :)

MarxIsDead, Well there's not even any durum wheat produced in Sweden even though we got one of the highest agricultural yields in the world with twice the wheat yield the US has. Ingredients for pasta is ergo imported mostly from Italy produced there and packaged or from Kazakhstan for making pasta here. Not everything is suited to be produced anywhere regardless of technical know how and efficient agriculture. It's not a trait of there inefficient ideology. That this is big news is.

My previous comment was meant to highlight the frozen economy, and the virtually nonexistent manufacturing base. The scenario you describe in Sweden is a perfectly normal free market transaction. Raw materials are produced in one nation, assembled in another and sold in yet another. However, Juche demands fierce self-sufficiency using only those resources that come from within the DPRKKK. Sadly, NK can't produce enough rice to feed its own people, much less produce pesto, ziti and capers.

Yeah that was the point and I'm well aware of NKs deficiencies, they don't have enough electricity to irrigate the rice fields even but that's because they are a collapsed economy witch has shrunk quite a bit. But I also made the point that the Swedish pasta produced here are from former soviet collectives i.e. none market based agriculture that was very productive and survived the change to market economy.

Without the socialist market they wouldn't had any technology at all much less a formally mechanized agriculture that has collapsed. They could very well build plants churning out pasta and whatever but of course the the ingredients would still be imported, as I'm sure the conditions for growing durum wheat is worse then in Sweden and as I pointed out in my first post they lack the know how and resources Sweden has.

Importing is perfectly normal in an economy like NK's too.

They are not given a chance to specialize, you can't give everyone pasta by selling and cooperating with Pakistan and Iran on missile tech and that this is big news is more of a sign of their stagnant economy then anything else. Any where else a restaurant opening is no big news and it wouldn't be the first of it's kind, neither would it be better equipped then there best hospitals.
