Wayne still does sporadic reunions with the C.C. Riders , and even his church stuff is pretty rockin' , what I've heard. He seems to be at ease with secular music , but , does it only when the spirit moves him , if you'll pardon the expression.
BUT , and this is no joke , look up Jerry Lee Lewis and The Bee Gees doing "Money"....Who is that white - haired cat with the V- neck guitar ? It sure is.
I knew he could sing like that, but the guitar? Man, how could he ever give it up? I know he's a minister now, but couldn't he still go out and rock on the weekends? Killer stuff!
I have often said that the best voices weren' t the best singers or entertainers Wayne, Joe Cocker and Willy Deville had the worst voices in music. Why then were they so successful? Because they cared and believed in what they were doing. When you saw them you knew you were going to walk away awed at the performance. They left nothing in the dressing rooms. They gave it all to us. Wayne was over the top. The hair? Damn. Preach on Rev. Cochran. We still remember and still love you.
great post. i remember seeing wayne on the mike douglas show back in the 70`s.i don`t remember the song, but he was wearing this cool white jumpsuit with a cape . does anyone have an old vhs copy out there?
Wayne was a very underated guitar player. The guitar he was playing was called The Flying V. The pretty blonde you see was his daughter Diane. Back in the 70s when I ran the stage at the Newport Diane was about 12 and Wayne would have her dance on stage. Sad to say Diane passed away a several years ago from cancer. I heard from Wayne's other daughter a few years ago. Hello Cindy !
WAYNE COCHRAN - ONE OF THE CONFEDERATE RECORDS ARTISTS from Macon Ga group of artists originally produced by Bobby Smith that made the big time- His now a Preacher in Miami!
Thanks for the posts. It's good to see the band, and Wayne too. It's especially nice to see Diane again; she was wonderful. I can't believe the close shots on this cut; they didn't do that on "Georgia."
His version of "Harlem Shuffle" is his best record as well as being the best version of the song. The other side ( Somebody Please) is just as good. Can somebody please put it up? I saw him in Las Vegas in the 70's and he was SO great! Must have been a 17 piece band. You are so frikking great Wayne. PLEASE come back to the stage so people will know what a real show is about! Seriously! You paid your dues. Now you deserve recognition you deserve including the Hall of Fame! I seriously mean it!
wayne played guitar on the midnight special. the cc riders and the bee gees backed jerry lee lewis . i talked to wayne on the phone in 1997 and he told me it was a thrill to play behind jerry lee. i first saw wayne on the UPBEAT tv show from cleveland in the late 60s. he talked a lot about his friendship with otis redding. a great performer who should be in the hall of fame.
This video is one of the best on YouTube, It was originally on the Tom Snyder "Tomarrow" show in 1980, which I used to watch during summer vacay when I was in school. That night Tom repeatedly referred this show "Georgia boys night", because the other two guests were Billy Carter (still the first brother at that time) and Little Richard. It was an unforgettable experience that I thought about a lot for 29 years and thanks to a great person on YouTube I and everyone else can see it again!!
As far as he knows it was never recorded. But they played Proud Mary on the Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. If anyone knows how to find it let me know. I've never heard it either but a few people say it was great.
Little unkown information....the guitar Wayne was playing was known as "The Flying V" . A few years before, rumor had it that Waynes wife got pissed at him and threw it accross the hotel room and all but destroyed it. Wayne found someone who was able to repair it. The blonde girl in the group was Wayne's late daughter Diane who passed away a few years ago. I remember watching Diane when she was about 12 dancing on stage at the Newport 7 Seas when I ran the stage there.
Great stuff from the King of Blue Eyed Soul! Saw him at the Sugar Shack in Columbus when I was 17; Wayne's version of "Proud Mary" is STILL the best (and sort of recall Wayne mentioning that Ike and Tina "copied" his version -- which I believe. Thanks!
