@ 4:23 A "Bambi" moment but MORE traumatic. OMG I wondered how many kids were traumatized by this? Poor Dutchess murdered by a couple of Yokels mistaking her and Scruffy as a couple of sheep killing mongrels. Also to keep it clean so they wouldn't suffer the wrath of the censors the anmiators decided on not showing the "pool of blood" in the snow after Dutchess was gunned downed.

I bought an old VHS copy of this at Goodwill, but later scrapped it. Why? Because if there's anything in the world that unnerves me more is seeing Scruffy's mom get gunned down by hunters. I, myself, would be so hurt and, yet, SO devastated, if, God forbid, my little one, a Lhasa Apso, my own little "Scruffy", were to meet the same fate.

Some childhood memories you can never outgrow, others, you have a VERY hard time trying to get rid of them.

I think the only thing that bugs me about this cartoon is the narrator, and he irritated me even when I was little, because he stated the obvious. Children are smart enough to understand that ice is slippery. The narrator could have been left out completely, and the movie would have been better for it.

just finished watching a movie half an hour ago and it was called the Plague Dogs. THAT was depressing. this just seems so . . .. . WRONG. its just too HAPPY. yeah the mom died but i didn't feel the DRAMA!!! those hunters are just so stereotypically STUPID (I dont hunt. i just cant) :(

but then again this IS a kids movie. i guess i'll cut them a slack on my opinion table.

That was just plain wrong. Those hunters knew that was a mother dog with a puppy and they still had the nerve to murder the mother and still come after Scruffy the puppy. When I was a kid, that scene made me cry something terrible. These hunters are BASTARDS! They are one of many reasons why I don't do hunting.
