All I can say is I ride the dunes outside Rexburg Idaho all the time, and they also have huge hits and gaps etc. People die there every year, and they have threatened to close it off more than once. This was a bike problem also I know, but man, do not ride over your head or without knowing what is on the other side of the lip, or to try and impress everyone. I see this shit in person too often and it makes me feel sick, and I've been a healthcare professional for 15 years.
If you ride as much as you say you do, you'll figure it out, just start small to get a feel for the sand. The only thing drastically different is that jumps will develop a groove that you have to be in or completely out of as you are going up the face. If you accidentally fall into the groove as you leave the lip it could send you sideways and through you off the bike. Turning at low speeds and starting out are a little different, but just take it slow when you first get out there.
So im going to the dunes in a few weeks, to Gordons Well with a ton of people. I hit pretty big desert jumps and ride track quite a bit, but when hitting jumps in the dunes should I keep a pretty steady throttle till im in the air? I dont want it dying in air or even putting me in a little endo...
man...after seeing this clip it sounds like you let off...shut off was wayyyyy too abrupt to have left fuel off.... you scared me in your other videos too, looked a little outta control when jumping things. keep practicing tho.. you'll get better. just remember in a dive like that PANIC REV the shit outta your bike!
Ahhh... ok.. since this vid of yours has sound... you can hear that you backed-off the gas before you actually took-off from the lip. Bad idea... even more so on a 4-stroke with that engine compression braking. A "panic-rev" and keeping a cool head would have saved ya.
Wow.... wow... dayum... glad you're OK now man. This is the kinda shit that *could* happen to any of us. Like... right that second a spark plug decides to fail, etc.
@TheGDizzo dude can you just not get it through your head that he didnt turn the gas on when he got on the bike to ride? or do you just not ride at all and dont undertand that after you ride its a good thing to turn your gas off? either way listen to the guy!!! HE was there HE crashed HE broke his back. i think he knows what he is talking about...
@squantotheboywonder : You might have noticed on YouTube how there are often a sh!tload of comments sometimes... and so... ya don't always read thru all the comments that happen to already be posted under a vid you just got finished watching... otherwise I might have noticed the dudes comments about the petcock not being turned on. Happens even to the best of us. Knock on wood that I've always figured that one out before leaving the camp-site. Hope this guy is doing OK these days.
@TheGDizzo thats true about the comments. ive left camp without turning it back on also. but where i was set up we were right next to the track and it cut off when i went over the first jump which happened to be a 70ft table, or at least thats how long i was told it is, and landed on the front tire in sand. and to make things worse when i hit the foot peg went through my boot because of how old worn out they were. not the funnest day ive ever had thats for sure
@squantotheboywonder : PEG *THRU* THE BOOT!! Oh Dude! Total Cringe! DAYUM... OUCH!!!! I have some IMS pegs on my Beast now... and those things kinda remind me of ol' skool Bear-Trap BMX pedals. Those Bear-Trap pedals would wake ya up every now-and-then when they'd whack ya on the front of your shin when you mis-placed your foot returning it to the pedal! Hope you're doing OK now man.
@TheGDizzo yeah im doing good now. thanks. my old bike had those peddles. i have little indents on my right shin from them. i hit a dirt jump we made and when i landed i landed to flat and my shin took the full force of the hit.
I remember screaming no and just waiting for the hit. Usually I just wait for the pain to stop after a crash, but I was in constant pain for a week and in the icu they don't let you sleep more than an hour at a time.
OH SHIT!!!!!!!!

@TheGDizzo I was gonna say, you can hear the bike sieze or quit right before the lip, if you listen, its a bog, not a cut of the throttle...
