  • @pbesmer ...... heres your girl, right here!! Neil will be playing on my death bed. Hes the last thing I ever want to hear!

  • a proud Republican

  • if u ever happen to upload the version from WELD i am heard yelling POWDERFINGER! at the top of my lungs at that show, on that album.

  • @cultfilmfreakreviews Oh my God...is it really you? haha I've always loved that. It sounds like "mother f****r" though.

  • this song is the meaning of life

  • I just drank some booze and how the fuck is this considered legal when cannabis is illegal? I just feel really dumbed down in a numb way, whereas cannabis at least makes you aware of things and I can also hear things in music I couldn't hear without it (pot). I just don't understand this world. But anyways, this song is great regardless.

  • @rsohlich1 They dont want you to think, they want you dumbed down.like the people in brave new world, and 1984

you can be winston smith and I be john savage.

join the army, see the world and get killed by a freedom fighter, or survive and come home crazy regected and homeless.

you're smarter than the average bear rsohlich1.

  • What a KILLER!

  • doh us hicks would notta nowed that, cmon that is incredibly condescending!!

  • Actually this song talks about Hernan Cortez, a Spanish who " conquered " Mexico and brutally murdered most of the Aztec people. He kidnapped the local group leader forcing them to give him gold and other valuable stuffs, in return, he would give the leader back to his people. But instead of it, he killed the leader and other 80,000 unarmed soldiers with his military front. I studied part of this story few weeks ago. Dancing across the water = Cortez coming with his ship in the ocean waters.

  • neil young knows whats going

  • Gott sei Dank, dass Neil Young noch lebt - ich bin ihm immer für seine Lieder dankbar

  • @Mathiaswillyg Ich auch.

  • I'm a fetus and I listen to music like this, music now just sucks.

  • As i understand it the Aztecs had a legend that their dead ancestors would return on big ships. When Cortez came they though that Cortez was their ancestors. They brought corzet and his men to the Aztect capital city where he demanded them under Spain. The Aztects actually won a few battles and Cortez used the many other indian tribes that hated the Aztects aginst them in battle as well as cannons and kill the Aztects. So much for their legend.......

  • Like Neil Young? Have a look at my channel, we're an up and coming band from the UK named: The Madcap Laughs. Have a gander, thank you, peace.

  • I love reading comments by the ignorant! The song is about the Aztecs. They weren't peaceful. Everybody feared them and their warrior societies called the Jaguar Knights and the Eagle Knights. The Aztecs would wear the skin of vanquished enemies until it rotted and fell off of them and they would also engage in ritualistic cannibalism. Peaceful? Not very. This is still one of Neil Young's best songs.

  • this was banned in spain. They don't know what they're missing

  • Thanks for the all the tunes Neil, when you are in Lompico, the beers are on me!

  • I want a girl who loves neil as much as I do.... nyc/li

  • where are the hot young women who like this kind of music? thanks

  • Neal's not Neal without Steve.

  • @aprilglaspieable Nope. And also it's spelled NEIL

  • If we could only get back to the day of the Aztec and Maya there would be perfection and no war and only peace and no hunger. I blame Bush for the destruction of the Aztec and Mayan cultures. The brown man brought justice and peace; the Bushes brought destruction.

  • @TheCannonofMohammed

Wow! He destroyed their culture centuries before he was born? That's awful.

  • @TheCannonofMohammed

Uh, pretty sure the Aztec's were not peaceful. Something about them sacrificing virgins to appease the gods doesn't quite sound too great.

  • @MrTurdFurgeson that doesn't justify the fact that your stupid white brethren came in and massacred an entire civilization

  • @TheCannonofMohammed can't tell if serious..

  • @SleepyKites Not serious. I just get off mocking political correctness, multi-culturalism, etc. Sorry.

  • @TheCannonofMohammed rofl, well done.

  • @TheCannonofMohammed the incan's were peaceful

  • @RedWings216 oh no, very far from that!

    and they ritually sacrified humans!

so they were far from peaceful they were conquereros themselves.

  • @59mar oh

  • @RedWings216 well ..you have got access to the internet.. you can educate yourself !

go to wikipedia for instance 'inca civilization'

  • @59mar Interesting

  • thanks!!

  • rock is the only music, and always will be...., and he is one of it's greatest prophets, may you still rock on for a very long time noone will be ever able to play the guitar like Neil!!!!!!!!!

  • @superhep44 Totally agree with u except there is a genre called blues and noone plays it electric like Peter "Green God" :-)

  • Incredible

  • 16 people are hulk hogan

  • you came dancing across the water neil neil neil. what a man!

  • you came dancing across the water neil neil neil. young.

  • thanks james for sending me this vid

  • the first song i ever heard by neil was don't let it bring you down and i have loved his music ever since

  • @thefabulousbugman thanks james for this and the other vids be well

  • Neil rocks, hes a genius with integrity and pure soul.

Thank you for enriching my life and keeping my dreams alive.

    Utter brilliance!

  • excellent

  • Epic. One day Neil, you will pass on. You will leave a hole (for me)....like Jimmy Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Gary Moore. Rock on Neil.

  • farfrickenout

  • far out

  • Gänsehaut und Leidenschaft pur!!!

  • hey Ilearned bout cortez we listened to this song

  • I have a a midterm on Cortez tomorrow. Thanks Neil! lol

  • This is such a fantastic, tasteful solo/song that really immerses the listener und takes him to somewhere else. You could indeed hear it over and over again without ever becoming tired.

I think Neil Young 'the guitar player' is severly underrated. Many people just consider him an exceptional lyricist but the thruth is he's got some great chops on the instrument too.

  • no one has ever or ever will do this song better than neil young. the best recording of this song and many others is from the decade album I loved you back in the 70s when i first heard this song and still love you to this day

  • Ahhhhhhhhhh Yeahhhhh!

  • Seriously believe this is the most beautiful piece of music ever written. I get chills literally everytime i hear it. Truly amazing, keep on rockin in the fuckin free world brah!

  • in the second picture, from 0:28, he looks like Hugh Laurie

  • @Betterman89 : yeah and even more on his picture on deezer!

  • Cortez landed in the Yutacan around 1518. At that time the Myans were ruled by Montezuma II . When Cortez landed Montezuma sent a party with gifts to greet the vistors. Cortez commited his first act barbarism killing 2000 Chululans.

  • Haunting guitar playing. Neil Young...long may you run.

  • If you don't like this there is something seriously wrong with you.

  • Good Solo Neil!

  • Just when I'm about to forget, Neil reminds me what a Bad Ass he is...

  • @123mollieb i totally agree with you on that

  • Beautiful song!! Nothing can top this man.. the cavemen invented fire.. neil invented guitar solos.

  • @123mollieb

and about his solos; his one string adventure is hard to top !!!

  • @123mollieb

    Nice saying!

    John Sistermans from Holland.

  • @123mollieb

    Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

  • @123mollieb Ouch. Im a huge NY fan, but there exists a number of other fine guitarist who could be said to have "invented" the guitar solo. I'm no expert but surely the surf guitarists led the way. And then there is Jimi. If I remember it was Neil himself who once said about Hendrix: "There's no one in the same building as that guy." My personal favorite is the lead gutiar trade-offs in Blind Faith's "Had to Cry Today," where Winwood goes toe-to-toe with Clapton right down to Shuffletown.

  • @123mollieb : yeah, and Jimi Hendrix invented the wheel....

  • Happy Birthday Neil !!!!!!!

  • It is time to saddle up the Horse again. Hey, hey.

  • Great song. Great music. Was at the Weld Concert in Buffalo NY in January 1991 (1991?). In addition to Cortez, Neil and Crazy Horse played Hurricane, Hey Hey, Cinnamon ... and Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind. Will long remember the tour and songs.

  • Love that Crazy Horse sound!

  • i always loved this song and dug the live rust version until i listened to weld and that became my fave [biased- arc is his best] but tonight! is the night...and this live version has more hara, gut, soul...going back to live rust as the best version.

  • best solo ever

  • i like weld's more...

  • @YerUncleKeith Damn straight... I think Weld's recording of this song is the best recording of Cortez full stop. Brilliant stuff on that album...

  • this is not the version from Live Rust...

  • @ericslide11 good version though, aint it?

  • @DONNANDMARY

oh yeah! I love it as well, and I love the studio one too. what is special about the live rust version is these choirs that make Neil's voice takin off :-)

  • @DONNANDMARY wonder if u'd like our cover...

  • bad ass.....

  • The Aztecs were actually wiped out due to disease brought over on the Spanish ships.

  • Untouchable---true genious

  • After all these years Neil Young still sings from my soul - it;s not the lyrics or the music it's the feeling - he's a modern philosopher

  • Saw this live, not a dry eye in the house. Outstanding song.

  • The Aztecs were one of the most horribly bloody civilizations to ever exist on this earth. The reason Cortex found success in fighting them was, yes admittedly due in large part to technological advances in armor and weapons but also from the fact that he was joined by many other native civs who wished to end the Aztecs destructive policy of removing their hearts to make sure the sun rise.

And they had a caste system, not the beautiful almost utopia eglanterism system Neil Young sings about.

  • During a time of Head Knockers, costumes, and mega hits by people with incredible management teams, and no talent... this man stood damned near alone. Follow this tune with Transformer Man and this is the best the 80's had to offer. Neil is just a man, but he lives with Miles, Ornette Coleman, Mozart.. Not many have his talent, or his voice.

  • @putitupmike1 true. Neil Young is probably the last remaining spark of that thing which was Rock.

  • A true classic. killllllllllllllllllllllller

  • such a greatsong. . . i like dave matthews version also.

  • @djogigem01 i know its your opinion like this is mine dmb should not cover such great atist like uncle neil,he could never do it justice, dmb is yuppie shit music, and he wouldnt know talent if it hit him in the face sorry thats just my opinion

  • @killtodayscountry I love Neil Young as much as the next guy but DMB and Warren Haynes blow this out of the water. O sorry, that's just my opinion!

  • @killtodayscountry I love Neil Young as much as the next guy but DMB and Warren Haynes blow this out of the water. The Jamacian stuff and the end? Silly...O sorry, that's just my opinion!

  • What a kick ass version of my favorite Young song. Thanks.

  • "And they built up with their bare hands what we still can't do today"

Cortez The Killer and Through My Sails are two of his greatest tracks.

  • one of my favorite songs of all time. it is amazing.

  • I have to admit the first time I heard this song, it was performed by Warren Haynes and Dave Matthews Band. I had no idea who wrote it. When I found it was Neil Young who wrote it, I freaked the fuck out!

  • He could have composed other one that could be called: USA, the mass murderers.

  • @jpvhack oooohh yeah,(i can kill, cause in god i trust)

  • Cortez was an enormous douche-bag.

  • I've always thought it was about the sense of awe -however deluded-Cortez must have felt. To argue that the Aztecs were nasty seems to miss the point.

  • I love this song to death, but the lyrics are pretty funny to me: Neil seems to be ignoring the fact that the Aztecs were just about the most brutal, war-like, and least (culturally) advanced civilization in the Western hemisphere at the time of Cortez. They pillaged, killed, raped, etc. hundreds of other tribes, yet when the Spanish came in and wiped them out THEY were the bad guys. Wow Neil.

  • @funkmasta666 hey come on now done ignore the rough in front of your eyes how many civilizations has the western world destroyed and continues to destroy.

  • @ScaredPiglet You deserve to get killed by Cortez you douchebag

  • I swear at 6:22 he says "Lady Gaga".

    ;) LMAO!

  • @MWCR how dare you mention that fowl wench! especially in a video where there is real music playing (obviously) no that being said lets enjoy this master piece and admire real talent

  • download NEIL YOUNG albums for free at:

    taringa.net/posts/musica/6169555/Neil-Young,-mis-albums-favoritos.html

  • Neil Young rocks!! most people don't know the true meaning of this song & i'm glad there is discussion here about it. 'what a killer'...............

    peace & love

  • My band does this tune along the lines of the Dave Matthews Band with Warren Haynes version. I call this song Neil Young's history lesson. It's a pity these peoples were wiped out by the Spaniards. I wonder what we might know today if it weren't for the crazy Catholics trying to conquer the world in front of the Muslims.

  • what a killer

  • Niel is one bad mother

  • Maggot Brain + Cortez the Killer = Purple Rain

  • I've got both the LR & Weld versions of Cortez, although excellent, neither sound as good as this one......which cd is this from? thank you for posting this vid/stellar tune.

  • @floridashorti DAVE RAWLINGS MACHINE KILLS THIS SONG CHECK IT OUT

  • @floridashorti live rust

  • @sgtdarkness1 - My apologies buddy, shouldn't have come accross how I did. Let's try to be constructive about this. As I mentioned, Franco died on Nov 20th 75. Cortez the killer was released on the Zuma LP 10 days before Franco's death. In July 76, Adolfo Suarez , for the Democratic Party, was appointed President of Spain. Anyone will tell you that in those days, a record that was released in the US would take around a year to reach Spain, so you see that this rumour has no credibility.

  • Comment removed

  • @sgtdarkness1 - No problem buddy! I am Spanish by birth, so you will understand that I did not take lightly that some guys (not you) were using this to have a go at Spain for something that happened 500 years ago. Anyway, let's forget all this and enjoy this masterpiece from Neil. Peace brother!

  • Comment removed

  • @sgtdarkness1 - The rumour was spread by Neil himself. According to his notes on the Decade album, he mentions that this song had been banned by Franco. As explained, Franco would have been dead when this record reached Spain, so this in itself should be enough to prove that this was not true. After Franco's death, the new government was formed by a socialist democratic party, who's last intentions would have been banning a record from being played in Spain. I do agree with you on ROCK on Neil!

  • xxdonaldqxx are you a fuc***g 10 year old?

  • @Zachattack4Million are you a fucking moron?

  • Neil Young is a fucking phony who has a hate on for whites. That fucker would never write a song about savages from other races who have a history of torture, rape and murder for amusement and sacrifice to their stupid ass pagan gods.

  • @xxdonaldqxx Chingado tu Madre, Bobo

  • @kjug250 This computer monitor is in a home in the United States........PLEASE USE ENGLISH!!!

  • Cortes was great man.Not only Southern Man don't need him around anyhow neither does Spain.Cortes stopped montezuma from sacrificing babies to his evil Gods.Cortes went ashore with five hundred men and sixteen horses and conquered over five million savages.Neil Young can go to hell.

  • @xxdonaldqxx Cortes was a syphilitic pirate scum mother of some Catalonian whore. He deserves to go down in history next to filth like Gen. Franco and Adolph Hitler. Why don't you wake up and pull your head out of your ass you fucking clown.

  • @kjug250 In my book Cortes was a hero.A great warrior who defeated a bunch of stone age cannibalistic savage violent animals who practiced human sacrifice.

  • This song could stop a car wreck, and everyone involved would close their eyes, nod and sway in time. It's hard for the Art School wave of musicians to write a song like this. They have compassion, sure, but no understanding of the world, what goes on it, or what makes it run. I'm not calling Neil Young god, but he had his finger on his pulse, our pulse, and you can just hear that in his music.

  • bravo, I love this masterpiece ! THX <3

  • Neil Young is a living legend.

  • @55roberto55 fukinarght

  • Neil Young is a living legend

  • You disgusting jew bastard.

  • @joofire88 eat yer heart out

  • @joofire88 dont hate for no reason

  • @deepknotch I do have a reason! That JEW is talking shit on a WHITE HERO.

  • @joofire88 White hero you piece of shit if Hitler was around today he would round you and your family and process you through a camp. I can't believe how stupendously stupid some people are....

  • He wrote some of his best music ever while lying in bed with a 102 degree fever back in the Canyon where he lived. Keep on rock'in the free world. Neil is old now, and so am I, but if the spirit is still there that's all that counts. Please visit my channel for some classis rock playlists. Peace to all.

  • @sgtdarkness1 fkinarght

  • look up "History of Spain", in Wikipedia, nothing but war after war after war

  • Cortez what a genius! This should be the Spanish national anthem (Ronald Reagan thought Born in the USA was pro American). And I hate reggae but Neil makes me like it . What a killer song, what a genius, what a millionaire, what a mystery but a most unusual talent the world has ever known. Neil Young is the most important person in my world (cause I'm such a loser) and would be the first person I would pick if I had my choice to talk to anyone. Next would be Paul Westerberg/Replacements.

  • What a song for a soldier to relish!

  • I want to cry every time I listen to this.

  • Neil young is a god among men.

  • cortes was a genius

  • My favourite .Thanks Neil!!!

  • The right singer-songwriter, born a the right time and place, Neil takes his place as one of the music greats of our age!

  • If we take into account that this record would probably not have reached Spain until at least several months later, it is practically impossible that Franco would have censored this song. Unless of course he did it from his grave. What isn´t clear to date are the reasons behind Franco´s death. Could it have been after listening to this song? LOL

  • That is utter nonsense! This song was never banned in Spain. It is rumoured that Neil may have said this when the record was first released, but it is far from the truth. Cortez the killer was released on 20th November 1975 as part of the Zuma album, which coinsidently was 10 days before Franco´s death.
