Hi Shawn, I'm sure I'm not the only person with this hurdle or issue. I understand when you say swing to the target and let the momentum do it's job. Why is it that when i'm about to hit a shot especially close ranger like a chip or pitch shot, the mind clogs up and one tries to play it cute or too safe and end up stuffing up a nice long drive and ruin it with a terrible pitch or chip shot. What is your fix on this am I trying too hard or slacking off which would it be? Thanks John
@gojipoj Now that is the very definition of trying too hard! Please see "Baseball mental game for golf; shawn clement" as well as securing the feel of the shot with "Feel the chip and pitch", "stop crashing" and "Hammer through" videos
I like the bilateral motion idea. I shift my weight more on the backswing to get the momentum started and notice my head shifts a little too. But this seems like the only way I can get enough momentum before I brace and whip the club.
Shawn, thanks for the video I feel like after watching all of your videos and trying to apply the techniques, this lesson helps bring it all back to a few simple swing thoughts. I have a tendency to have a unilateral backswing especially in my wedge game to control distance and am still very focused on the ball rather than my momentum going towards the target. I am very conscientious and aware that my best swings come when I toss the club back and feel that "free-fall" feeling on the way down.
Today I tried the Nike March driver. loft 9.5.. Its awesome.... From the flight scope, my lauch angle is 12 or 13 deg... Anything wrong with that? as you mention that 16 deg is the correct one....Using range ball I had 2999 to 4000rpm...... Distance 242 yards...Do you smell anything wrong with my swing as it seems to be over spinning the ball...?
Actually the 12 to 13 degree launch is what you are looking for except you want the RPM to be closer to 2500; this tells me that you are coming in a bit steep and coordinates with your previous comment of thin shots off the toe; if your tilt is slightly forward in the downswing, the club will be coming back to the inside too early and thus the toe hits; see "golf pro lesson tilted twirl" for both irons and driver and work on the 2 ball drill from "golf pro lesson through ball" Shawn
hi shawn, trust you are fine! Although my divots are always distinctively after the ball, I still feel the contact between my club and ball is not solid and bit of hook. Maybe contact is abit nearer to the toe of the club.The ball has mid flight.....So is this scenerio possible.?. Thin shots with beautiful divots ...If yes, what is happening?... Probably is like having the shot you had in your DVd blindfolded training.section
I am having a problem with my irons and driver slicing from left to right, I think its in my swing, was wondering shawn if you have a video to solve this problem?? Great videos dude I watch them all the time
OK Basics: See the "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip" video; then perfect the one leg swing; see the "golf pro lesson feet together and one leg update"; then very important that your perception to target is proper with "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 3; see part 1 and 2 as well if you have not done so already; Shawn
hey shawn i enjoy your videos and really like how you get into your teaching. i have been playing a lil over two years and would like to more information to build a solid game from the ground up.i would like to get more information on your videos and maybe come up to your facility for a couple of weeks for some lessons
Thanks for the comment and question! My DVD is a great place to start as it has all the vital information in priority sequence to make sure you don't miss anything important; as for the sessions, I teach year round here and do have some openings in the mornings during the winter, if you give me a couple weeks notice, we can get something together! You can reach me through my website listed in the video description in the upper right corner of this page;
Shawn I did not explain my question correctly. If I brace & tilt at setup during backswing and my front foot doesn't roll up . Is that okay? In some videos you do roll & some you don't. Is it necessary to roll that front foot heel of the ground. Without the roll I don't need to plant back to the front foot & that plant part was messing me up. Now I just brace and tilt throw the punch back & at the top of the backswing whip the arms down the target line with lag and a full finish. Thanks Buzz
Yes Buzz, of course it is OK; you can either do it this way or the way of my "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" videos; see "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review part 1 and 2" for the details;
Hi Shawn. Loving your vids. Keep up the great work! One drill I've read about that really illustrates what you're talkng about is the weedcutter drill recommended by Harvey Penick and Bill Melhorn. It is actually just like the perpetual motion drill, so I don't see any need to do both, but it may help some people.
Yes; great drill; I have a section in the DVD where I show a swing with a scyth; which really begs for the body to get involved as well as for the body to allow for a swing around the proper tilt! Shawn
Bilateral movement...this is an important concept. After viewing this video I went out to the range to give it a try...even though it was pouring rain. This motion works. I kept repeating the continual motion drill with this bilateral motion and then tried to focus on other elements like a flat left wrist. One thing that seemed to evolve was somewhat of a horizontal figure eight pattern...I was thinking this goes along with a 2 plane swing. Any thoughts?
I am not a fan of the 1 plane-2 plane comparisons; to me there is only gravity tracking the arms on the plane that fits the shot; you can have a 7 iron with ball above feet that has a much flatter plane as a 7 iron with ball below; so perpetual motion with abandon to gravity and momentum finds it every time for you; now the flat left wrist part...see "golf pro lesson bridging flat wrist with Hinged wrists" for the whole story...All the best! Shawn
Shawn, If I brace and tilt with both feet on the ground and it works very well , why would I want to lift my feet off the ground?Is it to hit the ball futher? Is it the next step to a better swing? The brace and tilt has improved my game so much I'm wondering if changing my swing by lifting or rolling my feet on my backswing is advised. Your video's are working and I plan on buying your dvd soon. Thanks
You can swing flat footed if you want to; the right arm will just collapse a bit early in the follow through and that is it; if you allow for more extension to the target, then the right heel will get pulled off the ground about 90% into the follow through;
Great Videos Shawn!! Thanks so much for taking the time!! I recently purchased your videos and it has helped me immensley. I am still working on training my mind to "get out of the way" and I tend to overswing at times, but I am working on your teachings and will get it eventually! I am working on getting my swing video together for your evaluation. I have taken some lessons before but left not feeling clear about the instructions. Not so with yours.
Thanks for the comment and support! :) Looking forward to checking out your swing! See the instructions on how to go about it on my "swing analysis services" page from my website;
One other thing to note - i'm not that great of a player and was taught to hold the club very lightly. Well I found out this doesn't work well with an overlap technique. So i tightened up just a little more and the results were amazing. I think you're the first person i've ever heard say - don't grip the club lightly - at least for me applying a bit of extra pressure turned out to be just the right solution.
I have to tell you after watching thisvideo i was so excited to go out and try this bilateral technique that i practiced at home last night just conditioning my body to get in the habit of using the bilateral shift. OMG! I went to the driving range today and spent a good 10-15 minutes just swinging the club and turning my hips more than ever before. Not only did i make greater contact than I've ever made - my shots were towering bombs, and I made great solid contact. Thank you !
Fantastic video as always Shawn - your teachings have helped my game enormously and I'm really enjoying the game again! Just seem to be struggling to get consistency with the driver - still suffer from the odd duck hook and a nasty slice (when my right foot uncontrollably slides back). Been working on feet together and one leg drill with this club and trying to ensure I am properly tilted and braced but the problem won't go away. Should I just let my arms swing? Please help!
Hey Elliot; Go to the "Golf Pro Lesson Timing and Tempo" and hit some drivers to the 150 yard marker with a full blown swing and you will have all the time in the world to get braced against the left side way before the arms fall through the ball towards the target; see also the "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review part 2"; Thanks for the comment! Shawn
Shawn actually I'm a newbie of the golfenvironment so havye you are great tips to a beginner , like how to choice club, improve swing,and good idea to play golf,thanks
The best way to go, honestly, is to get my dvd series which has all the important info all in priority sequence and then has all shots executed on course from the driver to the putter in disc #3; you will love it! Just go to the "My DVD" page from my website; Shawn
As always, another great video. I bought your DVD a month ago and my playing partners can't believe how I have improved in such a short time. One thing I continue to have problems with is hitting off of hardpack, which is plentiful here in Mississippi. I tend to top it on all clubs I guess because I am afraid of slamming my clubhead into the ground. Please help!
Hardpan requires a very wide arc through the bottom of the swing; if you go to the "golf pro lesson through the ball and at minute 6, you will see the 2 ball drill; hit a few of these on the range from either the rubber tees or on the plush area of the matt; then when on course, pretend you have to skip wide enough to put the 2nd ball into the air;
Shawn, one practice facility I go to (i have a membership) has hardpan grass and fluffy matts. Another range I go to on other occassions has fluffy natural turf and hard newer mats/rubber tees. My preference is to hit off the fluffy natural turf, but the range is expensive. I like to train myself to take nice divots, but that's very difficult at the range where I have the membership. So, if I want to improve my golf game the most, what type of practice facility should I utilize?
This video has so much info in it, yet it simplifies the golf swing like no other. I am amazed. Shawn's DVD is great, I strongly recommend it's purchase.
Shawn, I've been working hard all winter on my swing using many of your excellent videos. I re-read Hogan's book, but your videos are what made it all "click". I realized I wasn't actually hitting the back of the ball because I was afraid of turning the hips too far on the backswing. Once I started clearing the hips on the backswing, I could drop the club into a nice position on the downswing initiating it with the hips and bingo! the ball started going very straight. Thanks for the lessons
Hey Shawn great instruction can't wait to nail one right down the center in the mean time been playing way too much Tiger Woods Wii golf. Have you played & do you think it helps or hinders a real swing ?
Shawn, this is an absolute breakthrough concept. First time ever someone has been able to communicate to me what a swing vs hit really means. I have never hit the ball with this much ease and this solidly, middle of the clubface, both with the driver as well as the irons. I have hit a few drives off line, but every one of them was in the middle of the club face...awesome concept.
Great communication of ideas as always!! I'd like to know what you think of Stuart Appleby's swing and Steve Bann's teaching philosophy. I think Appleby has the cleanest swing with no wasted motion. Also, Bann works on have a stable, quieter lower body.
Please comment. I have had your dvd for over a year now and have recommended to plenty others!!
Relatedly, it would be good to hear what Shawn, or anyone else for that matter, thinks of the LeaderBoard training aid that Bann and Appleby are marketing
It is not bad; it does promote a brace before the arms come down but the motion of the lower body is not there; it does not promote a full turn in the backswing and the way back to the left side is lateral from the front instead of from the back which explains why Appleby pulls the ball under pressure when the swing gets quick...Shawn
Another great video Shawn! I put this into practice but found it hard to maintain my tilt. Specifically, planting my right heel to start the backswing (Tempo Update) while also focusing on staying up against my left side (Tilted Spiral 1&2). How do I combine all of these together? Gary from Vancouver.
I love your analogies, very funny. You're like a comedian golfer but the difference is, you know what you're talking about. I love the center of gravity up, hilarious.....lol. Thanks, you've made my day once again. Awesome video pal and thanks for your advice amigo!
Have picked up aspects of this from many sources over the years but never before presented in the context of this uni/bi-lateral movement concept. Brilliant, and with the imagery, so easy to get your head around. Have experimented with this for a few days; the results are impressive - Playing off 5Hcp I can now see that so many of my bad shots are a result of combining a bilateral movement in one direction with a unilateral movement in the other.
shawn, working now for nearly one year with your DVD and utube-vids. I improved unbelievable. Playing for 10 years now. Wanted to stop playing until watched your vids here. Started then as you told me with the one-legged shot, feet together. In the beginning I was not able to do this drills proper, but I kept on. Tried the sequence power drill and coudnt do that either. But now its possible for me!! Dont know why and how, BUT: See next Post
Never before I was hitting balls in this powerfull and nearly automatic manner. Not really effortless after something like 100 or so, but much easier then ever before. Able to decide to attack more or less from the inside.
Shawn, cant thank you enough for your work and enthusiasm. Obviously I had to learn step by step, once I got teh one leg, then feet-together and now the power-drill. Next?
Thanks for another excellent video. I let all my golfing buddies (except the ones in my foursome!) know about your site.
Possible to post a video on the function of the left wrist (for righties). I have a hard time keeping the lt. wrist from not bending (cupping). This bending makes my swing have a bow in it when I contact the ball and causes a loss of power, inconsistency.
What you are looking for is a combination of arms not collapsing against your body in the backswing and the integrity of the hinge in both wrists as they work together; see "Golf Pro Lesson bridging flat wrist with hinged wrists" ," golf pro lesson grip 2 wrist hinge" and see how the elbows stay close and in front of the body in the "golf pro lesson training aids" where you see me with that blue strap on the elbows, the "Golf Pro Lesson elbow close?" "Golf Pro Lesson Ball bearings and sockets":
Shawn, in the golf swing, Self 1 can be just like Trouble because Trouble is always waiting for you around every corner. As you've said before, get your mind's eye to see the swing already in motion so that Self 2 can do what is does best--to make a powerful and effortless golf swing free of Self 1 telling it what to do.
Brilliant Shawn. This is your best yet. I am convinced that we can never play this game until we begin to get the feel and get out of our heads. Of course some ground work is probably needed, but reading countless books etc, must give way to feel-play. This video gives it to me better than anything I have seen. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us.
Shawn, another great video to add to your multitude of tips. I always appreciate your simplification of the swing & rewatch your videos over & over again to simplify my thinking. Thanks again for posting so many videos.
I would say they were more bilateral in the old days; unilateral swingers started to emerge with the age of X-factor; which is unilateral arm swing with shaky platforms...not my favorite kind of swing as you may have noticed...:)
Hi Shawn, I'm sure I'm not the only person with this hurdle or issue. I understand when you say swing to the target and let the momentum do it's job.
Next?

You are very welcome my German friend! We keep on evolving and enjoying this game for the next 50 years and then let somebody else have the fun...:)
Plenty more to come! Shawn

Shawn,
Wow, checked out the vids you posted above, fantastic!
You should be on network golf coverage with your camera presence and knowledge. Thanks.

Thanks very much welshman! And you are welcome!
We must now do our best to continue to help golfers play out of their minds! :) Shawn

Shawn, another great video to add to your multitude of tips. I always appreciate your simplification of the swing & rewatch your videos over & over again to simplify my thinking. Thanks again for posting so many videos.

This video really lends support to many of your previous ones. Great posture tip in there as well.
Would you say that "down the line" swingers, like Nicklaus and Nelson, were more unilateral in their respective swings?
P. S. I noticed that Stewart Cink does your litte forward swing trigger.

Good question!
I would say they were more bilateral in the old days; unilateral swingers started to emerge with the age of X-factor; which is unilateral arm swing with shaky platforms...not my favorite kind of swing as you may have noticed...:)
