  • the sound of musicals? :S

  • Ruthie gives me chills EVERY time.

  • Love this version of her singing this song. Never heard such a slow version but loooove it!

  • Susan boyle's version is better =P

  • Jesus, my eyes and ears are so bloody happy....

  • I genuinely have goosebumps. I am blown away with her talent; she's such a gifted performer.

  • Bloody gives me goosebumps! Now life has killed the dreams I dreamed... Yeah, been there

  • So sad... So very sad....

  • cant believe she could have married prince edward. what musical children they would have had!

  • So beautiful job!!!

  • I'm an instant fan.

  • I enjoyed Susan Boyle version more...

  • Sutton Foster is way better than this trashy singer.

  • @mmbr01rff Duh. Sutton Foster is the most OVERRATED actress in the world! Have you seen Sutton's videos on Youtube? Her squeaky voice is all over the place! And WALT1896, her fiercest fan, wants to be the only one posting in the comments section of each video (he's got like a thousand accounts) and flags every comment that's not his as spam!

  • @mmbr01rff Sutton Foster has never sung this song, if I'm not mistaken.

  • @mmbr01rff trashy??? eat shit u fucking idiot.

  • Sutton Foster rocks!

  • Mary Poppins sings I Dreamed a Dream, a little too prim and proper, it's an angry/distraught musical - nothing wrong with the singing, she can certainly hit a note.

  • @leedsmanc

You can't describe a classic song with two adjectives--"angry/distraught", etc; it's also "pensive".bitterseet, even for a few bars, hopeful and joyuous.

  • @YD8189 I said it about the musical not the song, and I didn't say it was to the exclusion of all other emotions, I meant Les Miserable doesn't flinch away from the negative human drama of conflict, and I didn't feel that in this rendition.

  • Belíssima canção que se torna ainda mais graciosa quando cantada por esta linda mulher, Ruthie Henshall... nossa como você é linda!

  • I agree about all this comparison stuff - why not enjoy them all - sing and let sing. I love this version, as I do my memories of Patti Lupone singing the song in the original RSC production of Les Miserables, which I was lucky enough to see the first week it opened at The Barbican Centre . Patti created the role of Fantine and was amazing. But so many other great singers have sung it since too - that's great.

  • 120 Stupid People...

  • i dedicate this song to my dad who sadly departedfrom us from bladder cancer and bone caner on 17 september 2011 from garry whiting

  • @garry77083 So sorry to hear about your dad. May he rest in peace and I hope your family's coping.

  • With that voice, even a lullaby fome think, could be devoted to an opera of buffoons, at least someone might laugh.

  • Why must people make comparisons? Just enjoy the music. Each singer is something different, and that's a *good* thing. If it were otherwise, it would make for a very boring scene.

  • i am now a fan!

  • she´s beautiful

  • My favorite British diva. Fantastic. The arrangement was strange but Ruthie is always ON. Love her.

  • Gorgeous! She's an incredible singer!

  • Ruthie and Lea's versions are both great... and I also like the Glee version ;-)

  • why do some people hear a song sung by one person and enjoy it then say that nobody can sing it as good. different people sing songs in different ways.

  • RUTHIE WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH

susan boyle = a big fat fucking angus boneheaded delerous COW.

  • What the f*** is going on with some of you people? Yes, Lea Salonga sings this song beautifully, she is a pure goddess and noone can talk all of her talent or love for what she does away. But just the same goes for Ruthie - stop dening one persons talent because of a stupid comparison.

Really, some people need to get away from the urge to hide themselves behind other peoples doings and talents just to risk a big mouth and think they actually said something useful!

  • nothing compared to lea salonga, its fake emotion

  • Comment removed

  • seeing the comments, I just thought that Ruthie and Salonga is two totally different type of voice.. LEA's is more broadway-west end kinda type and has so much emotional & power + her voice is so clear, RUTHIE's is more concert type and album version..

this is just my opinion but for me Ruthie has to open loud her mouth so the voice can clearly come out from her throat and can be more powerful..

  • Of course, to Ruthie fans who are so used to this poorly sung and underwhelming performance, Lea overdid it. Duh.

  • I think the arrangement is off, the one in TAC is better! it's supposed to be raw, this sounds way too polished, it comes off as poppy

  • she got the emotion!! i love this performance :) i guess there's no need to make a comparison when both can sing really well! :)

  • NICE, BUT! I personally like Judy Kuhn's version of this song! Judy's voice is a bit more pure and Judy reaches some higher notes effortlessly! Feel free to search for Judy Kuhn. She sang this song at the White House in the 1980's for President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan!

  • @TheMusicguy68 I thought her performance was pretty average actually. Less time pitching herslef and more singing.

  • @mezzer99 have u ACTUALLY seen her performance??? watch les miz 10th annivesary...thats not average at all

  • @danefritz2006 Whose performance are you referring to? I am responding to a comment on Judy Kuhn's performance for Reagan which I wasn't blown away by.

  • I think the arrangement is too heavy and made to sound "pop" -like. The TAC was more suitable.

  • i agree, lea salonga is way different, the way she sings it, it comes from her heart

  • @bannon1000 And still what about suck my dick you faggy fuck huh?

  • she is great and don't be so patronizing fineshmecker

  • loveee ruthie !!

  • please note her review in The Stage of her first CD which stated her voice was as ditinctive as Streisand and instantly recognisable, this was before her massive leap to West End and Broadway stardom. Hensalls voices expands to fill a role, whether rough or in this case to fill the back story of Fantine, educated but fallen. This is a Saturday night Tv special and the vocal is for joe public, her 10th aniv perf at the Royal Albert Hall reflects different sentiments.

  • I am an avid fan of Lea Salonga but I also am a fan of Ms. Henshall. I would not compare them against each other, as somebody already said, that each singer gives something different to the song they sing that is why their renditions are quite different. Both of them are credible and both women are pretty and with great voices. Hooray for Salonga and Henshall! Broadway has enough room for both of them. Broadway needs a lot of different people to complete a beautiful show. Contrast is nec.

  • she is out of site

  • I think sje makes a very good Fantine indeed. She is very lyrical. It's just the backing which needs less drums

  • Music is something that every person hears in different ways, moves them differently emotions, affected differently and is unique in how it is heard as a result. This makes it very hard to "rank" same singer and song and I like one over the other version. It is what touches me the most.

  • There are many versions of her singing this song, all different in some form. As a former professional I thought she sung this very well. displayed emotion as the song requires and is far better then Susan is. To be compared to Garland and Streisand is like comparing a average, yet good player to an multi all star player. They were at the very top, which which very few singers ever reach. To say she is a lounge singer and nothing more is not accurate in the least. I am referring to skill only.

  • wondering who disliked this video... ???

  • i always think of susan boyle - to stop myself coming!

  • I was listening to this, and my mom came in. She said, "Oh! Les Mis got this song from Susan Boyle, right honey?" and I just stared her down and said, "Shut up, Mom." X3

  • this version was mesmerizing and melodical but leah salonga's voice was just PURELY ANGEL-CRAFTED, very versatile, powerful and magical

  • Seriously, someone (archieanders) is comparing this heart wrenching performance to Susan Boyle's (she's amazing in her own ways but not this song). I mean the addition of the conventional modern drum set is a bit unorthodox to a Miserables' ballad, but since when do you compare singer's abilities based on their popularity?

  • What's with all the Henshall hate? LOL. This woman is awesome.

  • I adore & much prefer Susan Boyle's version with its power & beauty...when she really cuts loose, it's awesome like in a summer electrical storm; and Elaine Paige does a fantastic version of it as well. Her emotion and acting ability seem to me much superior to this.

  • Susan Boyle's natural voice is so much better. And Henshall can't ever top Lupone's acting.

  • que mismo eo ya suniar desde!!!

  • I like Ruthie Henshall. She's very graceful. She has poise. She has a very sweet face and voice. Not to mention a fantastic voice. Such great emotion. Not that I'm bringing down the people who have sung this song like Lea Salonga, Susan Boyle, Randy Graff, Judy Kuhn, Elaine Paige, the original Fantine, Patti Lupone and many others. They also have everything that Ruthie Henshall has already. They're just stunning!

  • This is nice, but as sanjayame27 says, cannot compare to the amazing Salonga :)

  • @NiennaArnatuile she (lea) played fantine for the 25th anniversary concert

  • This compares very well to her performance at Les Miz' TAC. The arrangement is unfortunate, but she lifts up the entire piece with her vocals.

  • chills. CHILLS.

  • She looks like my mom when she was younger. They have the same eyes and smile, both with dark hair.

    Weird

  • @KazeTeisei Then I'd say you have a very pretty mum :)

  • Would someone please stop this camera! Okay, it's too late for this show, but I hope the director in the future will not have the camera in constant, and relatively fast, motion. It's distracting from a fine, although slow, performance.

  • @archieanders I find this much better than Susan Boyle's performance..

  • @archieanders Would it kill you to stop calling Ruthie Henshall a "domestic starlet"/"careerless has-been?" It's getting tiresome. Sure, Susan Boyle's version is good, performance-wise, but she lacks the vocal technique that Ruthie Henshall has. What Henshall lacks in performance she makes up for in voice.

  • @archieanders If you're blinded enough by TV show hype to call Susan Boyle "phenomenal" and dog a legitimate performer, you have no right to an opinion about performance arts. Please do what your TV tells you in the privacy of your own home and stop subjecting people to your regurgitated mass media notions, you sheep.

  • @archieanders Susan Boyle was the typical singer you'd find on a talent show. She can have all the talent in the world but can't stand up the Henshall or Salonga...the approach to a performance of a single song in front of a Britain's Got Talent audience is entirely different from the approach to actually playing the role of Fantine.

  • @archieanders Wow, are you deaf? Ruthie's versions put Susan's to shame. Susan doesn't even come close to having the vocal ability and control that Ruthie does.

  • I like her better in the tenth annerversary

  • susan boyle better than hers

  • i agree. the orchestra here pretty much ruined it for me.

  • @jacobbobcorn idk... i love the violin! it sounds sooooo beautiful. i think it adds to it a little. could you explain why it ruined it for you?

  • @jacobbobcorn Glad I'm not the only one. Ruthie is simply amazing, but the choices they made for the orchestra didn't work for me at all.

  • The 'orchestra' (I'm using this word very loosely) butchered this song.....it totally took away from the performance......

  • The orchestration here is frustrating. This isn't a pop song and shouldnt be played as such

  • @tragicdeceit i agree lol i was thinkin abt tat when i first watched this

  • MsEsseff: You're right. You can't compare the two. Boyle is thrilling, absolutely unique and original, a voice you can pick out of dozens. Henshall is typical of many singers who sing in the same too-careful, modulated, Broadway-ish way. She is a good, skillful singer, but there is nothing remotely unique about her voice or her style. She is one of many. Even though Boyle is not as technically trained or skilled, she is a vasty more exciting singer.

  • Ruthie Henshall is a babe!

  • Frankly I think this (and the TAC version equally) are amongst the finest performances of musical theatre you will ever hear anywhere. Its not about her voice, its all about the way she sings the song - the pain is etched on her face and ingrained in her voice so deeply, its impossible to escape. This is not a performance to enjoy for its musical prowess, its a performance to respect and admire for the sheer realism of the expression, and the virtually unmatched ability to portray raw emotion.

  • People need to watch Ruthie Henshall sing at the TAC concert.....

  • Imperious: You totally misunderstood my point, which does not surprise me. I never said or implied that Henshell, "made it because of her beauty." Henshell is pretty enough, granted. My point was and is that Henshell is not a distinctive singer. Period. She is run of the mill. There are dozens of singers around who sing just like her, some better, some not. Boyle's voice is distinctive and unique. Her voice thrills. Henshell's is pleasant and ok. Not enough.

  • @ericscam2 You can't even compare the two...all props to Susan Boyle, but she doesn't have half the voice Ruthie Henshall has. Her performance at the TAC was absolutely incredible.

  • Moreover, isn't it more sad to see someone who SUPPOSEDLY is more talented, is better trained, and has experience to not only be UNKNOWN but to have NO MORE CAREER? Henshall should be HONORED to be mentioned in the same sentence as the internationally known Susan Boyle!

  • Just because Susan Boyle is older and has a sob story that makes for good reality TV doesn't mean that she's less talented than Henshall and that it should be insulting for Henshall to be mentioned in the same sentence as Boyle. In fact, Boyle might even be the one insulted to be compared to someone totally UNKNOWN.

  • Ruthie should get some lessons from Susan Boyle, who performs everywhere and is known by everyone. Then maybe she would still have a career and be more than the "domestic starlet" has-been that she is...

  • @archieanders Give your head a shake man..

  • Why ohh Why was she not in the new concert. Bad choice.

  • genius!
