I knew I had some video of this somewhere. When transferring the data from an older computer I found it. I just so happened to messing with the video capture card in time to record the broadcast.
As requested I posted two video responses with the footage I still had. It was three minutes overtime so I put the interview with Don Rhodes as a second clip.
I remember when they did this. It was because one day out of the blue the bridge suddenly started to sag in one spot and they detected a huge crack in it or something so they had to repair the whole section.
After a night of -25F weather, a pair of very large and fully loaded salt trucks had been driving side by side across the bridge when 2 of the 3 girders that held that section had snapped. They had to blow it up quickly before it collapsed the wrong way on it's own. The basic design error was that it was too rigid, so they fixed the similar sections by removing the stiffiners.
its interesting cause, i guess pple in the movie industry can really understand real life demolitions unlike some hollywood idiots who try to mimic this and fail horribly
There was an added complication here that if it fell wrong there could be major damage to the rest of the bridge, or more likely the sewerage treatment plant would be damaged and incompletely treated sewerage would have to be dumped into the lake for weeks.
The weatherman is doing the talk because he would be the guy most practiced at working in front of a whole screen disply.
This is a late reply but the Hoan bridge is a huge part of the Milwaukee's transit routes. A few years ago one winter it developed a crack and they needed to replace it. This bridge is very large and for the most part is a land bridge going over the part of the city South of "down town." My normally 30 min bus ride from the University took over 5 hours when they had to close down the bridge so obviously it was big news.
