He led the Indians to break laws prohibiting the production of salt without paying tax to the British, or to boycott British goods and institutions. Mainly he was able to unite the country in opposition to the British, and there was no way colonial rule could survive a united opposition. Violence wan't necessary--the sheer numbers won out.
