This song and "Just Breathe" are my favorites from Backspacer, even though they come from opposite ends of the spectrum that is that album: this song is complex and anthem-like...and "Just Breathe" is simple and ballad-like. And yet, this band pulls them both off on equally sure footing. As it turns out, PJ itself is a Force of Nature! And Backspacer is a pretty doggone good album! Rock on, Pearl Jam! We still love you!

I believe Backspacer to be a concept album. It is very serious and very powerful. I feel like it is about a couple in peril. To me the woman is singing the fist song and the last half of the last song. Johnny Guitar completes the love triangle that brought the separation to light. Most of the album seems like he wants to win back his woman and just breathe, better say it now, better loud than too late and so on....every song fits... Anyone know about Ed's personal life the last few years?

@jboldery ed is very private about his life and his family. in my opinion i love backspacer, but i love every album pearl jam has done. i think this album is more personal than any other album they have done. to what i know about ed, i dont know him personally, but he's been with his girlfriend jill since about 2000 and they have two kids together. but like i said, ed and the band lead private lives.
