nothing will be as good as the original, because it came straight from the hearts of pink floyd. this, to me, is them paying respects to pink floyd and interpreting it for themselves... and they did a good job with that, old pink would be proud to see his music live on through bands now a days
I love this song to bits, have been obsessing over it lately (specifically the "delicate sound of thunder" version) and wondering if and how I could play it myself. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with this cover version, it's just a basic piano and vocal interpretation - nothing spectacularly good nor bad about. Take a pill, haters. Better still - make your own version and post it on here, let's see if you're criticism is justified!
I dont have a problem with the flaming lips. I have a problem when they take AMAZING pink floyd songs, make a crappy song, and call it a cover. This is incredibly horrible....their dark side of the mooon cover is even worse. If you wanna make something your own...dont call it a cover.
@totaltranquility it is pretty shite tho. but the LIPS are a great band, and would do Syd proud, whom this is about. And I gotta say, I only listen to the early Syd stuff. Anyway, you face has no talent! :)
@totaltranquility You think that they crap all over them. It would be more of a disservice to a prog rock band like Pink Floyd to take their songs and play them the exact same way. Pink Floyd was an original band, and it's not very much in the Pink Floyd spirit to create a carbon copy of a cover. I instead admire them for doing it their way.
@thewriter1008 I am all for doing something different, but that does not change the fact that this is void of any talent what so ever. This is unadulterated crap!!!
@totaltranquility I like it, you know. Maybe the vocals sound strained at points, but I like the way the vocals sound. The singers voice has this sort of desperation to it, like a cry for help. I also absolutely love the piano in this cover.
@thewriter1008 Yeah its awesome. People forget that guys like bob dylan, neil young, leonard cohen, etc had technically terrible voices, but by their creativity and passion turned their limitations into strengths.
syd was floyd,..it was his band..waters should've had the balls to change the bands name when syd left, or they left syd, depending how you read the situation..i like this song and, considering the subject/meaning reckon the flaming lips get some real twisted emotion from it that the original lacked..
@TheMattfinish the band was named after pink anderson and floyd council. I can't post any links here but you can always just google "what was pink floyd named after"
@adamlblackerby Syd Barrett, most likely. Barrett was the original lead man of one of the most well-known and loved progressive rock bands in history, Pink Floyd. This song is a Floyd cover, and the band originally wrote it as a tribute to Barrett, who had sort of lost his mind.
@swanski100 Could be possible. *Shrug* I've got the Wish You Were Here documentary, and it talks about when he walked into the recording studio. If I'm not going crazy (Heheh) and remembering it right: he did just walk in, spin around a bit, and walk out.

It's like the story of the wise man pointing his finger at the moon & the idiot looking at the finger. It's apalling to notice how hard it seems to be for some ppl to think a bit further. 3:14 just proves the guys KNOW their cover isn't worth the original. So, they cover themselves with a little mud as a token of respect to the masters. It doesn't mean the attempt has to be discredited as a whole. The Floyd, however great they are (were), ain't a fucking religion !
@debzpoet Maybe you should open your mind to more possibilitys than the de facto that Pink Floyd are the only ones who can play their songs, that's not what music is about.
The Flaming lips are massive Floyd fans and you sir are a musicist (like a racist but for music)
@debzpoet hey "Debz" i just walked in on this but flaming lips rule, and im gonna have to agree with whoever else said you were a condescending bitch.

@debzpoet well debbie, i dont talk shit about bands on youtube. i dont know why you had to lash out at the singer. i think ur just acting nice now that more than two people disagree with you
@debzpoet well this wont be answered but yes, you should watch your mouth cuz you dont seem terribly intelligent. im only 18 but ive already matured enough, at least artistically, to realise how stupid it is to insult any type of music, any at all.
How long is it going to take you? you dont have to answer me. Just leave that one simmering in ur easy bake oven brain for awhile
@debzpoet The Flaming Lips are free to cover whatever the fuck they want when they want. Wayne never claims to be the world's best vocalist and he doesn't have to be because he gets the job done. And if you really were a true Pink Floyd fan you'd know that Syd didn't even like the original you tosser.
@debzpoet You didn't exactly express yours in a respectful manner unless you're mentally unstable and unable to distinguish what respect is. You are entitled to your opinion but you're on a Flaming Lips video which most Flaming Lips fans will find and most certainly disagree with you. So you brought it all on yourself you may not be a tosser but you're certainly a condescending bitch. Also fyi music is subjective.
@debzpoet You listen to Lady Gaga so not exactly good musical taste enjoy the current slutwave of female pop-stars. Clearly the Flaming Lips are beyond your realm of comprehension.
Aside from the fact that floyd cannot be covered by anyone ever, the talky part without the british accent doesent work even in a cover i think... ( I mean they obviously "can" be covered, but the poor basterds why try just end up looking silly!... just cannot be done adequiteley, few measures of "money" cover in the Italian Job sounded cool, past the intro the song didnt make it. Even Floyd themselves cannot cover Floyd, the Floyed at the top of their game is unparalleled ... in AUS they cudt
@TexasRevolutionary They are indeed just a band. But revolutionaries just the same. People have been swooning over writers, musicians, army generals, politicians and philosophers for all the ages..
@knoxrox167 - no you are NOT the only PF fan to find this awesome. I do. Different interpretations but when it's all put together it is a alternate version that floyd COULD have played................................
NO ONE CAN COVER PINK FLOYD AND SOUND GOOD....sorry but i love pink floyd and was prepared to like the flamming lips but they have killed it! stick to the orginals!
@mrmindgames100 i agree, i have nothing against them covering this album as i know it was done out of love for floyd, and i can appreciate that they needed to do their own thing with it, but i will be sticking with the original :)
This is incredibly bad. I mean, the original is waaaaay longer than a 4 minute song, the singers voice broke several times, and they got the lyrics wrong. The Floyd version is a journey, the Lips version is an insult
@unpickedusername You clearly aren't a fan of the Lips. For me, part of the charm of the Flaming Lips is the "Hey fuck it, lets just make music" nature to their stuff. Who cares if wayne's voice is a bit off, or the lyrics aren't spot on. This song conveys the essence of the MUSIC, I feel, better than the original. And that's what matters.
@unpickedusername I agree...but not bad for a cover.. I play this song and it is a hard one to nail down with the Lyrics...... Gilmour is Gilmour and has so much more passion in the playing and lyrics....
@unpickedusername Wah Wah goes the baby with a hardon against the flaming lips covering pink floyd. the argument you present is threadbare, and shallow, with no understanding or indeed appreciation as to how music was passed down from generation to generation, before fiends of ignorance such as yourself could check out any song in three to five clicks of a button. Do everybody a favor and write down your opinion in the future, fold them five times, and stick them where the moon doesn't shine.
@knoxrox167 if your conception of trolling is agreeing then yes your correct. If not then u must have social issues and must not get along very well when people agree to similar tastes in music or life.
@TheAxlrose103 well, you said that Shine On You Crazy Diamond is from Dark Side of the Moon when it is actually from the album Wish You Were Here. haha. i couldnt tell if it was a honest mistake or not. sorry.
@knoxrox167 I have been a Floyd fan since I can remember, and I find this to be absolute brilliance. Anyone who hates on this just doesn't understand... Music is about freedom, doing the things you love to do, playing and singing what you love, the way you feel it. So what, it isn't the exact same as the original... It is beautiful in it's own right.
I guess its about passion. Anyone heard about that? Its taught in the all the schools all over the world right now... Get free of the EGO is the first part and lesson that follows. Next part: getting children, an education, being a complete jerk doing stuff like this, being a "grown-up", wanting to join The Flaming Lips because they want to. Hey, Lets all keep listening to this album 'till we die because its what we'll probably do anyway.
I can appreciate the music aspect of it or just the fact that Floyd let anyone release something like this is the first place.....which is kinda rare. Musical experimentation can be fun..... although in my honest opinion the FL kinda murdered all but one track I listened to..... thumbs down
i consider myself a pink floyd fan, and i listen the dark side of the moon cover of dream theater (the entire album) and i dont like it, i kind of hate that
and like a week ago i listen the cover of the flaming lips and i fuckin love it, that cover album its what covering's about, taking a song and play it with your style and the flaming lips have one of the most original styles
dude i get covering and i understand you should change stuff to make it more you but the flamming lips basically changed EVERYTHING. Basically only the lyrics were the same... which say that they only liked roger's "poetry" and hated what gilmour mason wright and waters did muscly... i find that to be an insult!
I'm really liking this though... it's pretty true to the original but they changed to it make it there own. now this is a good cover!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How can u take something so perfect and ruin it how can u sleep at night i mean i understand that you like pink floyd but listen to it not remake it its like taking the mona lisa and redoing it and giving it eyebrows but davinci doesnt want his mona to have eyebrows
Ah yes.....just like no one should cover Beathovan, or Mozart.....eh...wait a minute.....
Seriously though.....the Flaming Lips are a band that I think have more than enough legitimacy to cover a song like this......and I am a huge Floyd Fan...I even used to subscribe to the Newsletter/Fanbook: Brain Damage
imagining that PF are SO good that their songs are sacred , and should never be touched just seems odd. Songs like this are big enough TO BE re-interpreted....like any other classic.
I consider myself at least as big a fan of Floyd as anyone has ever been (to a stupidly obsessive point!) and I 100% applaud a band as creative (these days!) as the Flaming Lips for doing this. In fact, Yoshimi battles the pink robots IS the new Dark Side of the Moon... anyone wonder why it's the "pink" robots?
@ryoga415 Their own style of music? You mean psychedelic space rock? Yeah, you're right, what are they THINKING covering a classic psychedelic space rock band?
his vocals are not the greatest but given that hes pushing 50 and that he has a major US tour almost every 2 years you cant blame him for not getting the high notes. also I've come to like wayne's voice, its somewhat of an aquired taste, like dylan, or janis joplin. just my opinion
@aznxtasy341 I think the allure of Wayne's voice is that so resembles that of a child. If you just sit and listen, sometimes children will just break into a song and they don't care if they are in tune, or if the have the lyrics right or whatever, they just are happy and they sing. And they don't care who is listening I think that is what is so cool about Wayne's voice , that wreckless abandonment, like that of a child.
@alexTV yes actually Pink Floyd!!!! I'm just kidding they do a pretty good job...But then again I'm not a huge flaming lips fan I only listen to some of there stuff I guess so I'm not the one to judge.
The two greatest bands of all time have come together in the most amazing thing to ever happen to my ears in my life!

@TheAxlrose103 something tells me you're trolling me...
knoxrox167 1 year ago
@knoxrox167 if your conception of trolling is agreeing then yes your correct. If not then u must have social issues and must not get along very well when people agree to similar tastes in music or life.
TheAxlrose103 1 year ago
@TheAxlrose103 well, you said that Shine On You Crazy Diamond is from Dark Side of the Moon when it is actually from the album Wish You Were Here. haha. i couldnt tell if it was a honest mistake or not. sorry.
knoxrox167 1 year ago
@knoxrox167 I have been a Floyd fan since I can remember, and I find this to be absolute brilliance. Anyone who hates on this just doesn't understand... Music is about freedom, doing the things you love to do, playing and singing what you love, the way you feel it. So what, it isn't the exact same as the original... It is beautiful in it's own right.

why would you take an amazing song and turn it into shit?
Andrew223a 1 year ago 2
I guess its about passion. Anyone heard about that? Its taught in the all the schools all over the world right now... Get free of the EGO is the first part and lesson that follows. Next part: getting children, an education, being a complete jerk doing stuff like this, being a "grown-up", wanting to join The Flaming Lips because they want to. Hey, Lets all keep listening to this album 'till we die because its what we'll probably do anyway.

who told this lot this was good must need there head testing

I can appreciate the music aspect of it or just the fact that Floyd let anyone release something like this is the first place.....which is kinda rare. Musical experimentation can be fun..... although in my honest opinion the FL kinda murdered all but one track I listened to..... thumbs down

DUB SIDE OF THE MOON IS WHERE ITS ATTT
Jeremaid 2 years ago 4
i consider myself a pink floyd fan, and i listen the dark side of the moon cover of dream theater (the entire album) and i dont like it, i kind of hate that
and like a week ago i listen the cover of the flaming lips and i fuckin love it, that cover album its what covering's about, taking a song and play it with your style and the flaming lips have one of the most original styles
sorry for the very bad english
santiagoeag 2 years ago 4
dude i get covering and i understand you should change stuff to make it more you but the flamming lips basically changed EVERYTHING. Basically only the lyrics were the same... which say that they only liked roger's "poetry" and hated what gilmour mason wright and waters did muscly... i find that to be an insult!
I'm really liking this though... it's pretty true to the original but they changed to it make it there own. now this is a good cover!

How can u take something so perfect and ruin it how can u sleep at night i mean i understand that you like pink floyd but listen to it not remake it its like taking the mona lisa and redoing it and giving it eyebrows but davinci doesnt want his mona to have eyebrows
vorthman 2 years ago
Ah yes.....just like no one should cover Beathovan, or Mozart.....eh...wait a minute.....
Seriously though.....the Flaming Lips are a band that I think have more than enough legitimacy to cover a song like this......and I am a huge Floyd Fan...I even used to subscribe to the Newsletter/Fanbook: Brain Damage
imagining that PF are SO good that their songs are sacred , and should never be touched just seems odd. Songs like this are big enough TO BE re-interpreted....like any other classic.
frankensteinmoneymac 2 years ago
I consider myself at least as big a fan of Floyd as anyone has ever been (to a stupidly obsessive point!) and I 100% applaud a band as creative (these days!) as the Flaming Lips for doing this. In fact, Yoshimi battles the pink robots IS the new Dark Side of the Moon... anyone wonder why it's the "pink" robots?

At :40 what he should have said was, "It already sounds awesome! I love that." Then he should've said the other thing when he started singing.
Standby2o08 2 years ago
I wish I could hear the rest of this show, sounds like it's just Wayne talking about how awesome Pink Floyd is which is fucking fantastic.
allthatisandeverwas 2 years ago 2
not too great. I love the flaming lips but they should stick to their own style of music
ryoga415 2 years ago
@ryoga415 Their own style of music? You mean psychedelic space rock? Yeah, you're right, what are they THINKING covering a classic psychedelic space rock band?

great music.. the man can't sing though.
cheekymcd 2 years ago
@cheekymcd
his vocals are not the greatest but given that hes pushing 50 and that he has a major US tour almost every 2 years you cant blame him for not getting the high notes. also I've come to like wayne's voice, its somewhat of an aquired taste, like dylan, or janis joplin. just my opinion
aznxtasy341 2 years ago 24
@aznxtasy341 I think the allure of Wayne's voice is that so resembles that of a child. If you just sit and listen, sometimes children will just break into a song and they don't care if they are in tune, or if the have the lyrics right or whatever, they just are happy and they sing. And they don't care who is listening I think that is what is so cool about Wayne's voice , that wreckless abandonment, like that of a child.
myway43 1 year ago 2
Really liked the song. he cant make it to the high notes though
