I do a similar thing, but I run a little bit away form Luigi, then press A on the 2nd controller. This put him safely in a bubble, and far enough from Mario, so that I don't pop him. And I do it on 3-1, cause that's a very fast level, and I get a good average of all the items (besides normal Mushrooms, which are very easy to get).

It's a lot easier if you beat the game 100% and the mushroom houses are always open... Then again, you'll probably use this when going through the game normally, lol.
