I went to a park when I was a kid and threw a half eaten chicken leg down,3 hrs later it was just a bone. It was covered in wasps and they ate every bit of it.

Probably they bite some off and feed it to their larvae, because they don't need much protein themselves.

They feed themselves on lemonade, rotten fruit and the sap from trees, which are all rich in sugars needed as fuel to fly around.
