it's too bad Matt became a 9/11 truther nutter... i guess he cared more about spouting off than people appreciating him as an artist. that stuff really gets in the way of enjoying music sometimes.. i need to lay off reading about what my favorites say, it's always a disappointment
He 's a real genius although I have thousands cd's, Matt is always been my favourite composer writer and innovator He thetheize any stile with such a class that only him could do.I hope he'll be back on stage ,I've been waiting for such a long..
Could any song from hanky panky deserved a place in the soundtrack of brockback mountains???
I saw them with Depeche Mode in 1993. I took my little sister(a DM fanatic) who was 13 at the time...she could've cared less about The The. Her loss...and I think I saw them earlier that year with the Cranberries.Once you hit 40, it all blurs into one big haze.
as an 80s child, this was the 1st song i heard of this band... they (he rather) are definitely underrated. I first heard of The The at a local Sam Goody Music store in the mall (remember those? haha). The title of the band caught my eye & i remember thinking "mmm, what an odd band name", but i wasn't gonna buy an album solely on that... then i heard this song on the radio in 1993 & i finally got a chance to hear em! Too bad internet wasn't around then or i would've heard of em a LOT sooner!
@pessimystica The internet was around then. Would you have Gophered them? I don't believe the mp3 conversion utility was available for a year or two after that, however. Still, it's nice to believe that back in the 80s and 90s we swapped songs over ICQ, or via BBSes at 2400bps.
well, of course it was around then, but only if you knew how to use it, & of course people had to have the most up-to-date computers. I'm talking about your average computer user... but most certainly, i would've looked up just about every 80s band that i was looking up in the late 90s. The only difference would've been listening to them a few years earlier ;-)
@Meesterjojo Wow... You must be really old. And you're definitely really condescending. The MP3 standard wasn't published until '93, so one would have to be pretty freakin' desperate to download a, what, 40MB? song through a 2400 baud modem. Most people have lives. Go get one.

wow some haters in this bitch hating on the the, i think dusk was a great album i saw them live 94 greatshow at the cotton bowl matt johnsson good voice on that fella
Dusk was the first album that brought Johnny Marr to my attention. I was wondering who was behind some of the awesome guitar playing peppering this album and when I found out it was him I was pretty surprised (not being a Smiths fan at all).
Have been hooked on The The since Infected. Fave LP is definitely Dusk although Mind Bomb runs it a close second! Matt Johnson *is* a genius, obviously. More colaborations with Johnny Marr would be good!
Again,THE THE( MATT JOHNSON )what a talent and a messiah worth wishing would reserect a vestige of music genius....for f**K sake save us from banality!!
yes, it is great... and i love & miss them in general! i search for my absolute favorite song "GRAVITY" that i got as an old original maxi-EP, but i got no player any more :-( can anybody upload the video??? best greetings from berlin, tom
Hanky Panky....wasn't very good Naked self was OK....would love them to comeback with a killer album...one of the best band Ive seen live as well....Soul mining..followed by Infected followed by Mind Bomb followed by Dusk...Stunning...come on Matt .....
A great rockin' song from one of my top 10 albums of all time (and Soul Mining's in the top 10 too). The harmonica, the guitars, the voice, the words. Johnson and Marr in one of there great eras- considering they made the 80s too.
I normally hate harmonicas, but damn, this song makes them rock. Frankly, I don't mind any The The song with them, which is quite a few. Not sure who has the harmonica fetish with The The.
They also worked with harmonica legends Mark Feltham (Mind Bomb) and Judd Lander (Infected). Those two along with Marr are probably some of the best harmonica players that the 80s pop/rock/alternative music scene ever saw.
if any of you are aware of Matt's current "Save shoreditch" campaign. myself and a few of his loyal fans have decided to do everything in our power to encourage Matt to do a gig at the site to try and raise awareness for his cause. We think that with enough interest he might go for the idea. The plan is to get as much support as we can so if your interested in helping plz spread the word and join The The (and Matt johnsons) Face book and my space pages and check for further details. It's Johnny Marr, ex-guitarist (and other instruments such as Mandolin, and Harmonica and sometimes Keyboards) of The Smiths.
Marr played on Dusk and Mind Bomb.
His harmonica-playing is indeed different from the basic harmonica-stuff.
Reint25 3 years ago
