They're both amazing. Olga started the revolution in gymnastics and Nadia just finished it. Its impossible to compare the styles of the two because they're completely different.
Olga brought in the tiny figured, circus tumbling charm, and Nadia brought in the athletic, straight-lined stoic perfection. Both had overly pushy coaches who thought outside the box with gymnastics, and that changed it's future from being a women's sport with balletic movements to a tiny figured, under 18, tumble till you drop brigade.
No athlete should be compared to any other that is not a contemporary. These two are legends of their time.
However, what I do realise by watching this is why people always said Nadia revolutionised gymnastics, turning it into what we know today as the "modern" sport. Olga does something almost closer to ballet or dancing. Nadia's routine reminds me of the gymnastics I grew up watching.
Nothing bad there mind you either way, just fascinating.
There isn't a gymnast on the planet today who can touch the artistry, grace and beauty of either of these two. As to who was better? Like themightycelestial said: apples and oranges. Nadia has her fans, Olga has her fans. Elise Ray has her fans.
So apples, oranges and coconuts.
Personally I prefer to watch Nadia for the moves, and Olga for how electric she was.
Both Nadia and Olga are goot.. but Nadia was better cause how she moves... so soft and almost incredible to imagine.... very unique... that is why she is PERFECT 10 ..Olga she is almost Perfect...
Oh poor Olga. She had some very tough years. I think Nadia was better. But she also had a much more easy life. Olga was forced to do all the things her coach said. But Nadia had a chioce. I'm not saying that nadia didn't have som hard years. Living in Romania under the communist time. Of course it was hard! But compared with olga...it is something real else:
Olga got drugs for delay the puberty, and her coach raped her...
Ok-i don't know a ton about gymnastics other than being a spectator/fan for 30+yrs, but olga looks like she is doing some crazy, dangerous moves that I don't see done today-is this possible?
only 4years apart not really different times

Olga began the revolution in gymnastics. Nadia finished what Olga had started. They were both giants of their times.

they were from different times, you can't really compare them properly, they have their own originality from different times.

Apples & oranges.
Nadia impressed everyone with her technique.
Olga impressed everyone with the way that she lit up the stadium.

Olga was great, but Nadia was better. She was also stronger mentally, Olga did fall apart at times.

You're not allowed to get up on the bars like that, like when she did that backflip off of the top bar onto the bottom, you can't.
mattainr 3 years ago
the bars are different nowadays, that's why the release moves and skills are different. back then, it was more like circus skills.

true. Bela always said he tried really hard to get Nadia to smile.
dreamissbehaved 3 years ago
I don't see how Olga was over-rated. But I do agree Nadia was better, even if Olga had better dance.

@sum1ecclectic You know nothing about gymnastics if you think Olga was over-rated.
