The comments speak a lot of the open mindedness and skepticism of some iaido practitioners (or people who would like to be perceived as such). How one should be so hostile towards something outside of their experience is beyond me.
@Kiznae youre right, my father just died of cancer, i was unemployed. i had way too much time on my hands...so i decided to share knowledge with people that would appreciate it. if youre not one of them its much nice if you closed your window in silence rather than showing your narrow-mindedness to the world AND possibly hurting someones feelings by being cold hearted.
Hmmm... tough debate. I prefer the flashy spin as a matter of personal taste, but the utilitarian in me can't help but frown. I would have to agree that the spin is an unnecessary maneuver that doesn't serve any purpose outside an aesthetic one and is potentially dangerous. I'd probably eschew it altogether. A simple, well performed noto is perfectly serviceable.
@Imakelamecomments yes, i knwo what chiburi is. but mostly its not used as actual blood removal. its a symbol for it. ideally you would wipe it. that is why i said you can argue the purpose of spinning and chiburi. things in iaido are kind of fabricated for training purposes. its not actual kenjutsu. there are many forms of iaido, you shouldnt say spinning has no place. some forms of iaido are more flashy than others. maybe you can say its not koryu. but again we dont know well enough.
spinning your swords... don't let your sensei see that. There is no use for spinning, only to make things flashy, but then again you should have chosen katori shinto ryu instead of iaido.
@Imakelamecomments while i appreciate your comment i think you should take a step back and look at iaido in general. its just a spin. take it easy and enjoy it for what it is. as for spinning one could argue that there is no reason for chiburi too.
I do that spin also, but I add a violent pre - spin stroke like zatoichi does, sort of chiburui, to "shake off the blood". I hope your arthritis is better, Iai techniques (softly performed) helps hands, arms and shoulders. I have a problem with my left shoulder, two handed techniques have helped me. But we must be careful, as you said a shinken is heavier than a Iaito, one can overtrain a little!
how about the one where you hold the sword in front of you, palms facing inward and backhand facing left or right, an the sword goes around your hand.. like how some people do with short swords or chefs knives.
Wow thank you for this video, sheathing the sword was verry difficult for me the normal way im not sure why. but doing the sword spin you showed and sheatheing that way feels much more natural to me and is also flashy. thanks much!
its is really good video but it depends which style you are practicing the shibiri that you do is the same but the notto that you are doing is not muso shindin ryu
well it looks like one of the nine circles steel Iaito - the kurin line , I hope so as nine circles budo is in my neck of the woods over here in England .
the bohi termination looks really well done as does the kissaki - more like a fred chen huanuo forge blade than a cheness - although it does remind me of a deluxe cheness Iaito , a lot of Iaito are thin narrow blades , this one is very shinken like in sughata - givng the user more of a feel of a liveblade , I would love to know the make - I would have it for my own use in the dojo .
cheness i believe. its a 1045 carbon steel they say. its a nice heavy blade. all the iaito iv'e felt from sword store and paul chen and nijin (forget the name) have been very light compared to this. this is my daily iaito.
If you have Fibromyalgia/Arthritis, you may want to invest in a parafin wax bath. Rite Aid, CVS or mabey even wal-mart will carry these. We ue it for proper blood flow of both the feet and hands. Use it once or twice a day. It won't cure but will help.
yes its iaito. it was a gift. i am not sure where it came from but i just went to cheness website and the stuba is the same. weight seems the same too. so maybe it is?
wow you have arthritis and can still use that sword better than i can

GeoVII 1 year ago
@GeoVII noto can be argued as well. there are many styles of noto and speeds.
its been argued by well established sensei even that present day noto is ridiculous with its high speed.
the spin is a spin. thats all. the spin i preformed is no more dangerous than some noto and batto.
there's no debate needed about this. its a fun and interested technique. period.

Chiburi is to remove the blood from the sword. Being able to spin a sword like that is pretty cool, but is not iaido.
Next thing you know, people are going to call Bren Foster an iaidoka, because he can spin katana's.
