@agb6659 Because theyre both 5 cylinder engines. The TTRS isnt a tuned TT,Its a whole new engine. The standard TT as a 2.0 4cyl turbo charged engine with 200bhp or 272 in the TTS Which is the most they could squeeze out of the 2.0 engine. They did think of using the 3.2V6 But they didnt like that engine and thats why they made a whole new 2.5 5cylinder engine, similar to the one in the old quattro. Thats why theyr comparing these two cars!!!

Used to work for Audi Sport and have just driven the TTRS not a bad car but not even the best TT, engine sounds great but really is short of punch in the upper reaches, th UR 20v was a ground breaking car - awesome, end of!!
I like the video and agree that the orginal Quattro was a milestone but he is such twat about the new TTRS I have driven one and getting one this Friday the 30th I think it is awesome.
I'm really disappointed by this video... This guy ruins the video... He is a slow, useless, nonsense-talking bore without a single idea about what he has driven!! I mean he's right that the Quattro is a true milestone for the motorsport industry, but he literally buried TT's reputation when EVERY single else review I've watched considers it a baby R8 and by far the best car at its price tag..If I had €76200 (price in Greece) I'd buy it no questions asked! Marvellous car!
i remember a fiat specialist mention that one of the audis shares the coupe block. tbh im kinda clueless. but aimed at the video i prefer the original quattro.
I think the Sport-Quattro does it in 4.9secs (306hp). The Quattro 20V (220hp) needs 6.3secs 0-60, the 10V (200hp) in 7.1...someone correct me, if i am wrong...

30 years ago Audi had problems but starting with the Quattro, galvanized body and the 5 cylinder things changed. I'm originally from Germany and since there are way more German cars on the road there I can tell you that BMW had bigger reliability problems then Audi 20 years ago. The hand brake was one big problem when it got stuck (not cheap). A Quattro was also rather expensive to maintain. My dad had a 100 2.3,. I had a 90 2.3 Quattro, my sis still drives an 80 2.3. Can't complain.
Well, your mother was very lucky then.I own a Audi 5000S Quattro-turbo and it has never failed me on ice or snow, where bmw for example would not even dare to go.Those older Audi's are simply magnificant.
@Henzzman, I loved that car even with all the electrical issues it had. I was supposed to inherit it when I turned 16 (back in 1993) but unfortunately the issues with the car got to expensive and my mom sold the car before I could get my hands on it.
Well mine is in pretty good shape.I live in eastern europe and the car was delivered from germany.I guess you were pretty sad, when you didnt get this wonderful machine.A lot of school mates would have probably turned heads, when you would have arrived to school and allowed them to hear the power of the 5cyl turbo.
@Henzzman, I wish I would have got to own it of course without all the electrical issues. I loved that inline 5 turbo and actually loved the boost lag in the lower gears as it gave me that rush of power. However, give it a stab at highway speeds and the rear would squat and it would go like mad. Great car!
Yeah,it does tend to flip up the front end of the car, when you give it a nice slam on the throttle. And yes the sound of the 5 pot, with the catback exhaust, that i have, along with the turbo.gives me a definite feeling of awesome power. Its just a feeling i cant describe, when im driving with my Audi, favourite tunes playing and the sound of the 5 pot coming from the engine. The sound is best, when you change gear at high rpms.
And nothing happens in this video, so why do they bother making it? You better had written this story and some photo's, there is no added value in this video, because there is nothing interesting to see.
It seems like anything has to be on video these days, even if there is no reason for it, this bloke is just driving around like my aunty, which must be frustrating for the cars, i know it is for me, ik want screaming engines and smoking tyres, not this!
For the price of the TT RS, wouldn't most people prefer a BMW M3 convertible? I know I would. I can see some allure for the Audi but overall I feel like the BMW does the same thing as the Audi and gives the driver a lot more for a similar price.
I said, I prefer Acura and said nothing about FWD. This shows how much you dont know about Acura, since most Acura's are AWD not FWD as you tried to imply. The TSX & base TL are FWD, but the RDX, MDX, TL and RL are all AWD. The car I own is a 2006 Acura RL SH-AWD. Why in the hell would you care about what I like anyway. It shouldn't make any difference to you what I like or don't like.
As an Acura owner myself (2003 Acura CL-S 6MT coupe) I have to admit the Acura SH-awd system is pretty amazing. BMW and Audi already have plans to debut similar AWD systems.
I drove a 6 speed Type-S CL years ago. That was one fast coupe! When they make the CL again, it shouldn't be a 2 door TL, it should a purpose built sports car, like the Z, Mustang and others in that class. I loved that 3.2 liter V-6, no turbos or superchargers, just speed! The name, ripper3200; racing around with a 3200cc (3.2 liter V-6) engine. I no longer own a TL but have owned 3 of them. What was the top speed of that CL-S? A 99 TL 3.2 with Nav cost me $31k with a top speed of 147 mph.
Even though its a FWD car it is very capable and nearly edged out a comparable RWD BMW 330i in a few tests. I agree, the next CL should be more sport oriented but 370Z competition is a bit too sporty for Acura. Acura needs something along the lines of a 335i/G37 coupe with 4 seats and luxury features. Ive heard of another coupe in the works but look for it to be FWD based with the awesome SH-awd system. Should be a great handler as the TL SH-awd 6MT put the smack down on many different cars.
To sporty for Acura? Does the NSX & S-2000 ring a bell? I worked for Acura/Honda years ago, because of the recession, they have put a lot of projects on hold, or canceled them all together. They were designing diesels engines as an option for people who wanted higher mpg and they were making a new NSX with a V-10. They were almost done before the recession stopped the projects. In this new world, you have to keep everything close to the vest, because nobody is buying anything anymore.
NSX and S2000 are HONDA cars, so I'm not sure where you are taking this argument?. The best "true" Acura was the Integra Type-R. In ALMS racing the (Realtime Racing) Type-Rs were competitive with the 3 series BMWs - proving that "handling" could be achieved regardless of wrong-wheel-drive.
@psybervw, as a Honda enthusiast myself I agree....to a point. However the ITR and TSX's are fairly light so handling wasn't compromised in those applications. However, when more weight is added or a larger car is considered those compromises surface fairly quickly and any and all handling advantages quickly go to the RWD vehicle.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh, by the way, I never had any problems racing BMW's or Audi's for that matter with my TL. There was an A8 one night. I came up on him topped out at 147mph and blew right by him, he was doing about 70. Next thing I know he caught up to with in 50 or 60 feet of me. I was like DAMN old man, get down with your bad self! Moments later, a sharp highway turn was coming up. I was like, well time for you to go old man, because Im not slowing down for the turn and I know he is. Sure enough, he did.
So you were able to "out-testosterone" an old man in an Audi A8? Wow man, you're really doing your part to bring respect to the "Honda Fly-By" - lol!!!
Even in Lamborghini brand a Countach or a Miura will always remain uniques and more desireable than any other newer Lamborghini. You have to see a Top Gear episode were the older supercars beat the new ones. You got to read Evo's May or June issues about old vs news and you will be amazed. You don't need to be a classics collector to prefere the Quattro over the RS... you got to be what we call it...oh yeah... a connaisseur!!!
Oh please. Sure the Quattro is iconic, but which would you really, really have deep down inside? Times move on and unless your a classics collector you'll take the TTRS every time. If it's not the greatest TT as you suggest, what exactly is? The new TT shape was widely applauded by the industry and the public alike, so the top of the range version can only be something very special indeed. The TTRS deserves better than this.
Why assuming immediately that people would or should have the RS? Even Autocar (a magazine that I respect so much) says that the Quattro has the best steering of all Audi. I have driven the Quattro for 6 years and it was absolutley delicious. I drove a friends Audi TT S and I thought it was a very good car. But not only the Quattro will always remain iconic, but it will remain a unique Audi. Even in other brands, we saw many oldies better than new ones: Ex: Testarossa > than any new Ferrari
Very stupid comparison, those cars have absolutely nothing in common. One is using "true" quattro system, torsen mechanical differential...another one is using haldex, 4wd developed by swedish engineers which is also used in Volvo, Saab and many other cars.
If you want Audi Quattro...buy one with longitudinal engine so you get true quattro system. Audi really screwed up it's "quattro" brand by mixing haldex and torsen.
the crank arms for each cylinder aren't spaced 180 degrees apart like a 4 cylinder. You can run any number of cylinders, as long as you work out the crank position and timing.
Who cares about cylinders? There are Audi A3 versions that have 6 cylinders like some versions of Audi A8, yet nobody would call A8 an ancestor of A3. Audi Quattro was based on the same platform as Audi 80, just like Audi S5 Quattro is based on the same platform as Audi A4 (Audi A4 replaced the Audi 80 series). This means that S5 Quattro and the original Quattro are in the same class and S5 is the descendant of the Quattro. TT used to be based on the golf and is not in the same class.
Anyhow, the TT is the first audi in a long time with the wanted 5 cylinder.. So it is probably a big deal for the Audi fans.. But you're right.. It should have been launched in a S5.
I love the metallic roar of five cylinder engines.... The volvo T5 used in the ford focus RS is an excellent engine as well, its power delivery is so versatile.
They should have compared this with the Quattro sport. The reason being, both cars were built in limited numbers and the sport kicked out over 300bhp (actually more). In a straight line the sport would do the rs.

you sir dont have a clue
"A roadster is a two-seat car, without a fixed roof and with emphasis on sporty handling"
"A coupe is a closed car body style (permanently attached fixed roof)"
looking at the ttrs with its "permanently attached fixed roof" aka COUPE this would make it comparable to the iconic quattro sport, also a COUPE

However, give it a stab at highway speeds and the rear would squat and it would go like mad. Great car!
blkguynlex 1 year ago
Yeah,it does tend to flip up the front end of the car, when you give it a nice slam on the throttle. And yes the sound of the 5 pot, with the catback exhaust, that i have, along with the turbo.gives me a definite feeling of awesome power. Its just a feeling i cant describe, when im driving with my Audi, favourite tunes playing and the sound of the 5 pot coming from the engine. The sound is best, when you change gear at high rpms.

if i was to choose a car based on performance, not looks, i would go for the new sti instead of the RS. Better performance for less

Blah blah, jadda jadda, blah...

I can see some allure for the Audi but overall I feel like the BMW does the same thing as the Audi and gives the driver a lot more for a similar price.

you prefer FWD???? FWD FTL
jamesjdm 2 years ago
Who said anything about preferring FWD?
I said, I prefer Acura and said nothing about FWD. This shows how much you dont know about Acura, since most Acura's are AWD not FWD as you tried to imply. The TSX & base TL are FWD, but the RDX, MDX, TL and RL are all AWD. The car I own is a 2006 Acura RL SH-AWD. Why in the hell would you care about what I like anyway. It shouldn't make any difference to you what I like or don't like.
ripper3200 2 years ago
As an Acura owner myself (2003 Acura CL-S 6MT coupe) I have to admit the Acura SH-awd system is pretty amazing. BMW and Audi already have plans to debut similar AWD systems.
blkguynlex 2 years ago
I drove a 6 speed Type-S CL years ago. That was one fast coupe! When they make the CL again, it shouldn't be a 2 door TL, it should a purpose built sports car, like the Z, Mustang and others in that class. I loved that 3.2 liter V-6, no turbos or superchargers, just speed! The name, ripper3200; racing around with a 3200cc (3.2 liter V-6) engine. I no longer own a TL but have owned 3 of them. What was the top speed of that CL-S? A 99 TL 3.2 with Nav cost me $31k with a top speed of 147 mph.
ripper3200 2 years ago
Even though its a FWD car it is very capable and nearly edged out a comparable RWD BMW 330i in a few tests. I agree, the next CL should be more sport oriented but 370Z competition is a bit too sporty for Acura. Acura needs something along the lines of a 335i/G37 coupe with 4 seats and luxury features. Ive heard of another coupe in the works but look for it to be FWD based with the awesome SH-awd system. Should be a great handler as the TL SH-awd 6MT put the smack down on many different cars.
blkguynlex 2 years ago
To sporty for Acura? Does the NSX & S-2000 ring a bell? I worked for Acura/Honda years ago, because of the recession, they have put a lot of projects on hold, or canceled them all together. They were designing diesels engines as an option for people who wanted higher mpg and they were making a new NSX with a V-10. They were almost done before the recession stopped the projects. In this new world, you have to keep everything close to the vest, because nobody is buying anything anymore.
ripper3200 2 years ago
NSX and S2000 are HONDA cars, so I'm not sure where you are taking this argument?. The best "true" Acura was the Integra Type-R. In ALMS racing the (Realtime Racing) Type-Rs were competitive with the 3 series BMWs - proving that "handling" could be achieved regardless of wrong-wheel-drive.
psybervw 2 years ago
Aw... poor boy.
ripper3200 2 years ago
@psybervw, as a Honda enthusiast myself I agree....to a point. However the ITR and TSX's are fairly light so handling wasn't compromised in those applications. However, when more weight is added or a larger car is considered those compromises surface fairly quickly and any and all handling advantages quickly go to the RWD vehicle.

Sure enough, he did.
ripper3200 2 years ago
So you were able to "out-testosterone" an old man in an Audi A8? Wow man, you're really doing your part to bring respect to the "Honda Fly-By" - lol!!!

ripper3200 2 years ago
Totally different cars, with different audiences. Besides, M3 Convertibles are for poseurs - a real driver would take the coupe! :)
psybervw 2 years ago
Yea, I realize that the cars were created for two different markets, but its just a personal opinion.
Actually, I don't even know why I used the M3 convertible in my argument, my bad.

Even in Lamborghini brand a Countach or a Miura will always remain uniques and more desireable than any other newer Lamborghini. You have to see a Top Gear episode were the older supercars beat the new ones. You got to read Evo's May or June issues about old vs news and you will be amazed. You don't need to be a classics collector to prefere the Quattro over the RS... you got to be what we call it...oh yeah... a connaisseur!!!
prancinghorse25 2 years ago
C'est très impressionnant
Danixixi 2 years ago
MrButterscotch1 2 years ago
Why assuming immediately that people would or should have the RS? Even Autocar (a magazine that I respect so much) says that the Quattro has the best steering of all Audi. I have driven the Quattro for 6 years and it was absolutley delicious. I drove a friends Audi TT S and I thought it was a very good car. But not only the Quattro will always remain iconic, but it will remain a unique Audi. Even in other brands, we saw many oldies better than new ones: Ex: Testarossa > than any new Ferrari

Well there are V-10 engines, which are just two rows of 5-cylinders. I don't see anything too weird about it.
Liist 2 years ago
5 cylinders has been around for a long time, volvo t5,fiat coupe 20valve,ford focus st. A really incredible sound too.
mw1tt5 2 years ago
Very stupid comparison, those cars have absolutely nothing in common. One is using "true" quattro system, torsen mechanical differential...another one is using haldex, 4wd developed by swedish engineers which is also used in Volvo, Saab and many other cars.
If you want Audi Quattro...buy one with longitudinal engine so you get true quattro system. Audi really screwed up it's "quattro" brand by mixing haldex and torsen.

The straight 5.
Flat and V engines need paired cylinders.
ZeekyBoogyDoog 2 years ago
the crank arms for each cylinder aren't spaced 180 degrees apart like a 4 cylinder. You can run any number of cylinders, as long as you work out the crank position and timing.

geforce5700fx 2 years ago 2
Fail again.. The TT got a 5 sylinder
Wrasko 2 years ago
Who cares about cylinders? There are Audi A3 versions that have 6 cylinders like some versions of Audi A8, yet nobody would call A8 an ancestor of A3. Audi Quattro was based on the same platform as Audi 80, just like Audi S5 Quattro is based on the same platform as Audi A4 (Audi A4 replaced the Audi 80 series). This means that S5 Quattro and the original Quattro are in the same class and S5 is the descendant of the Quattro. TT used to be based on the golf and is not in the same class.
flybli 2 years ago 4
Anyhow, the TT is the first audi in a long time with the wanted 5 cylinder.. So it is probably a big deal for the Audi fans.. But you're right.. It should have been launched in a S5.
