  • I can recommend the anime to you. Maybe it's not as magical as the Last Unicorn but a great mixture of good entertainment and nordic mythology. Thanks for the book recommendations, guess i have to put them on my todo list ;). By the way i use the same method as you to study foreign languages. Some day I am hopefully able to speak and write a few sentences in japanese. But I am not sure if watching anime in japanese with english subtitles will lead to much success in the end. :P

  • @apoleon2010 I like the sounds of that anime - what is it called? :)

  • @TheRavenOfPoe

Hello. I was referring to the last sentence of my first comment. The danish anime is called "Walhalla" in german or "Valhalla" in english.

Perhaps it's more interesting to watch in german because of Christopher Lee. It has its weaknesses in storytelling but overall great voice actors and a lot of links to norse mythology.

At amazon.de they sell it for 4 euros, but i don't want to know the shipping costs to australia. ;p

  • The Last Unicorn is also one of my favorite anime. As you said it is quite popular in germany and every year at christmas time it is usually broadcasted on tv. When i was a child i didn't know Christopher Lee was voicing King Haggard. His dark and sad voice was perfectly suited for Haggard and he did a great job. It's a pity he didn't voice Saruman in the german dub of LotR. But then he dubbed Odin and Thor in the german version of "Walhalla", a danish anime, released in 1986.

  • Your videos make me curious, what do you do exactly (professionally that is)?

  • Christopher Lee is so cool. I absolutely loved Astrid Lindgren's book "Mio min Mio" as a child, and when Lee played the part of Kato in the movie adaptation ("Mio in the Land of Faraway") he managed to magically match my imagination. I only recently learned that he voiced the German part of King Haggard himself. I gotta get the hold of the book if you say it's that good. Books & films are such a good means to learning a foreign language. Thanks for the recommendation!

  • omg i LOVED that movie so so so much as a very young girl! a couple years ago i found the DVD in a bookstore and bought it... then i watch it.. and im sorry but i was SO disappointed. it was really hard to watch lol. it was nothing how i remembered it.. but still its fun to see someone else recollect the movie.

  • I first saw the film two years ago and I loved it!

I've been looking for the book since then, but have yet to find it (I could buy it online somewhere easily, but for some reason I often tend to feel like I'm "giving up" if I don't buy from a regular store).

I've actually got an idea floating around my mind for a fantasy story based on the style of the film (I assume the book is similar, as the author wrote the screenplay, I think).

  • Yes the film follows the book quite closely, leaving out only a bit of the background stories of Schmendrick, Lir and Haggard. The speech patterns and dialogue of the characters is very similar - one of the reasons I enjoy the film so much! =)

  • "my Sister and I recognized the Author and title immediately, and we hurriedly checked.." "hurriedly checked.." Dear Raven, do you realize your videos are really like reading aloud a story? -That's why they are so interesting! You put in all the details and emotions too. -Bri.

  • Ahh... finding a book like that in a book shop. Isn't that the best thing?

  • I never knew you lived in Chicago, I left Chicago in the late 90's, wish I woulda went to Australia :) You must've seen that on WTTW channel 11 PBS network?

  • The last unicorn is an amazing book that deserves to be turned into a live action film. Are you listening Peter Jackson?

  • Thank you for making this video sharing your story of how you came by "The Last Unicorn." Your video felt very professional. This excites me to read the tale myself. Where can I get a copy?

  • Beagle also wrote the script for Bakshi's animated Lord of the Rings. He talks about his involvement in the project in the documentary "Ringers-Lord of the Fans".

  • I miss you raven *hugs*...

  • miss you too Raya! hope you're doing well :)

  • The title sounds really familiar to me, but I don't remember anything about it. I'll keep my eye out for a copy of it. =]

  • I still haven't read the book. I remember the film, which has tons of star power by the way

  • Comment removed

  • That was a fine film, Mia Farrow and Lee were cast well for those voices.

  • i will have to look this up....i have netflix, i enjoy mia.

    michael

  • I agree! I particularly liked Alan Arkin's voicing for Schmendrick too =)

  • Miss Raven you've a way with words. "The Last Unicorn's" magic has inspired my own recent works I am sure of it. Your careful recommendations found me immersed in some of the finest written pages not long ago. Delightful rich spinning tis;)

And so we found ourselves meeting some very special people. Why not? hehe An honour to meet a bright, witty, personable author. One of the world's finest living ... in my estimation.

And Connor, a publisher of quality par excellence.

    Magic!

    A.S.Angelo

  • I absolutely agree and could not have said it better, dear Angelo :)

  • I love that you did a video on it. I wish I lived close to you. I want to borrow that book. T_T I'm going to have to get it now.

As for second hand book stores....They are my guilty pleasure. I can not leave one without a book.I told myself I wasn't going to get a book when Mike was here but I got one and he bought me one too. >.>

  • it's impossible to resist a good book, hehe!

  • Perhaps you could present regular book-review vlogs? There are many who complain that the love of reading in the young especially is in decline, you would make the perfect "ambassador" to represent literature.Perhaps You-Tube would pay you to do such a thing? Your enthusiasm, insight and charm are wonderful.

  • That would be fun to do! There's so many books I'd love to share with people - I should start making more videos about them :) I have one other book review I've done as a video so far, called "Blindness" by Jose Saramago :)

  • Always room for a little magic in our lives! Lovely account of your enchantment, thank you.

  • Yay for rediscovering treasures from our childhood! I remember I saw a clip in german about the cartoon here on YT. I wonder who sent it to me =p

  • Great vlog! I remember you talking about the last unicorn with Ash awhile back lol, who would have thought you'd make a vlog about the book =)

Well if you recommend it, it must be worth reading I presume.. what is the premise of the story?

  • That's because the Last Unicorn is AWESOME!

Premise...All the unicorns on earth but one disappear. So, the last unicorn goes on a quest to find out what happened to them.

  • Thanks Jordan! And yes, hehe, I remember that too! =)

  • Who would have thought you were a fan of the cartoon? Oh ME!! So cute that you did this vlog. Treasured fantasy books are a wonderful thing.

So amazing that you got to meet the author! We really really are overdue for a chat aren't we? ;D

  • You don't say? ;)

  • hahahahha And I can actually use skype now.

  • LOL! Same goes for you as for Ash. I want to hear all the graduation gossip!

  • Wait a minute. Where's my chat, eh? :P I remember asking for one when you got back.

  • LOL! It's coming. I arrived home to find out the assignment that I thought was due the following weekend was due the _previous_ weekend, and I'm now working on my take-home exam for the course. I will come up for air soon. I'm really looking forward to a mega chat.

  • Yayyyyyy! Because I'm ready to spill Mike's whole trip here. And I've been waiting till we were both home. :P

  • they certainly are! :)

  • When I was a teenager I wrote a love letter to a girl I liked and I stole lines liberally from The Last Unicorn. :-P

  • aww, hehe :)

  • I just love your enthusiasm it is infectious. I will put this book on the long list of books I mean to read.

    Regards, Peter

  • Oh, PS! You won't share the fact that I just ordered the book with anyone will you, Jen? A grown man reading Unicorn Stories is not quite the image I try to project. But if I ever did read a unicorn story, rest assured, I would only ever do it while chomping down on a stubby cigar, and twirling my sixguns, just like Papa Hemmingway! There! I hope that clears up any confusion, I may have created earlier! ; )

  • hehe! I find it is the most grown and wisest of men that can read stories about unicorns, Brian - but I am perhaps bias, lol

  • OK, my copy from Amazon is now in the mail! hehe! : )

  • Yayyyyyyyyy!

  • Thanks Ashley!

Hope you are happy and adjusting to College life well!

  • I look forward to hearing what you think of it, Brian!! =)

  • the fact that you love 'the last unicorn' so much tells me once more that you'll also love 'stein und flöte'! so go and read it!! ;-)

  • hehe, I should and definitely will! :)

  • I think I had an even better idea in the meantime: 'die unendliche geschichte' or 'the neverending story' by michael ende! in case you saw the film, I can assure you that the book is wayyy better. the movie doesn't capture the depth and truth of the book in the least. I think I like 'die unendliche geschichte' even more than 'stein und flöte', but they're both gems. oh my, it seems I'm starting to overload you with book recommendations .. :-)

  • I have read the Neverending Story but it was so long ago now and I was so young it really is time to re-read it, hehe! One can never have too many book recommendations :)

  • I bought the DVD a couple of months ago. I saw it at the store and remembers the VHS we had when I was a kid (and that I wasn't alowed to watch because it was too scary - according to my parents). So I watched it now but I have to say I didn't really like it a lot. The story is rather predictable and the animated movie isn't drawn very pretty I find. Maybe I should have watched it when I was still a kid ^^

  • Dear Raven, your love of books and stories is so infectious! I could not help but be drawn in by the wonder of this book, and your story how you found it!

I could so easily imagine two young girls huddled near the TV, playing the movie over and over. And later, going downstairs, out of the high-rise apartment, and acting out the scenes on the lawn and playgrounds below.

Thanks, dearly, for sharing the magic with all of us too!

  • thanks for sharing your long-term enthusiasm, I've just put it in my Netflix queue

  • I LOVED this story & the animated movie!!!!

  • I love that film, I didn't know there was a book.

I look forward to reading it, when I find it :)

  • I know that story too..My sister loves that as well but she can't remember how it all was and the film is gone now..I didn't find it anywhere..

  • online is the best place these days to find such treasures :)

  • thanks

  • "Why must you always speak in riddles?"

"Because I be what I be. I would tell you what you want to know if I could maam, but I be a cat, and no cat anywhere, ever, gave anyone a straight answer."

  • hehe, certainly one of my most favourite lines

  • What a delightful story, to learn of your love for this book.

Did you find the books better than the films?

Did I understand that you went to San Francisco?

  • In general I tend to enjoy the book version of things more than the film but in this case I love both the book and film of The Last Unicorn - perhaps because the author worked on the screenplay for the film it managed to keep that magic that was in the book =)

Yes I was in SF for two weeks - I absolutely loved my time there!

  • I've seen that movie but I never knew there was a book, and now I want to find it and read it lol. Thanks for this Raven <33 - Claire

  • You'd love the book, Claire! :)

  • hello!

you speak so well, i'd love to hear you actually read to us from the book, maybe the first part of the first chapter?

I will look for it in our bookstore for sure

    :-)

  • What a clever suggestion! : )

  • Thank you Twish! :)

  • my mother would love to hear your beautiful pronunciation, great Vlog ;)

  • thank you =)

  • one day you'll be an old granny running a sidestreet second hand book store.

  • must I wait until I am old? That sounds like fun, hehe ^^

  • As a kid I was always grossed out and frightened by the Harpy in the movie

  • Yes, I found it was the way the other characters reacted to her and even merely discussed her evil nature that was what created that terrified feeling in me as a child too - and in contrast to her, how beautiful the heart and spirit of the unicorn was =)

  • I liked the harpy as a child. T_T I wonder what that says about me.

  • i like the mvoie :-)

The music in this movie makes me sad ... its a great story.

  • I completely agree :)

  • Funny,

for me it was the other way round. I wanted to translate Americas soundtrack of the movie. So, by chance, i picked up some english vocabulary.

  • hehe, it is an interesting vocabulary set too. "Adler" and "Schmetterling" are two of the other words that seemed to stick in my mind after seeing the film in German =)

  • You used to live in CHICAGO! A lot of times I'm not too far from there! No way!

    5*/fave

  • I lived there for about 4-5 years =) I would have been between ages 2 and 6 or there abouts, haha

I have very nostalgic memories of the city and hope to see it again one day =)

  • When I was a teenager, I was influenced by the writing of Ray Bradbury. Now that I'm not so young anymore,I've rediscovered Mr. Bradbury and started collecting autographed copies of his books. They probably don't have a lot of monetary worth, but knowing that someone I greatly admire actually had them in his hands makes the books priceless to me.

  • Fahrenheit 451 had a great impact on me when I read it growing up and it is still a favourite of mine to this day =)

  • I never heard of the story but the way you talk about it, I need to go see it. =]

Christopher Lee talks awesome german. He did some Sherlock Holmes films in german too.

  • I never knew that about Lee being in german Holmes films - I would love to see those! =)

  • Yeah I had one on VHS but I can't play it anymore.

  • I have a secret about Unicorns, but I'm not telling as you'll tell Envy. You still chat to them. Tell them I said to say hello. I lost touch with all the blog TV guys. Blessings FLETCHER
