@Usi, the Gym Leader you fight is based on your starter. You fight the Gym Leader your starter is weak to. This is why the Dream Ruins place is recommended (You get an elemental monkey that is strong type-wise to the Gym Leader you fight here)

I would have just trained my starter and the fire monkey. Because your going to get better pokemon later on in the game. I haven't seen any other pokemon worth training honestly. Early on its better to have 2-3 pokemon and add them to your party as you go along and find pokemon that fill your needs. Like you have fire and water, you need electric, also you will be getting the legendary pokemon...so that would bring your party up to 4...meaning you can fill the other 2 spots with decent pokemon.

They weren't really creative with the pokemon of this version. Fire Monkey = Chimchar. All I see is remakes of pokefrom from D/P and even Sapphire/Ruby.
