You need to move your hand up a bit on the butt of the wpn near to what is called the "TANG". There appears to be between 1/2 to 1 inch of space where your hands (the webbing between your thumb and forefinger) and that needs to be level where the TANG is on your wpn. SW 500 is a single action only revolver. Watch any video and you'll see that they have to manually cock the hammer before each shot. It's probably that way to make sure you're paying attention before each shot.

@apt3444 I don't know, man. I went to S&W's website and every revolver in .500 said "Single/Double Action" in the descriptions. Probably the only reason they were working in single action was for shot accuracy. Granted I haven't watched a ton of SW.500's being fired but I've never seen a DA style frame type like those that were SA only in anything. Even the Ruger Blackhawks are easily noticed SA only.

@apt3444 You obviously aren't much of a shooter, Smith and Wesson hasn't made a single action revolver since you've been alive. All of Smith's X-Frame revolvers, and most of their revolvers for that matter, are double action (sometimes referred to as DA/SA for specificity), not double action only; know the difference. Regular double action revolvers can be manually cocked; so they can be operated in both a double action and single action manner.
