I am getting the Ibanez grga32t with Edge 3 tremolo and Passive humbuckers. They are the magnet pickups tho. I use to have a BC Rich Warlock and I believe aI am getting a good replacement guitar. For me the magnet pickups are good metal playing.
@REX05011 it's because the pre-amp colours your tone, making them sound the same in any guitar. EMG active pickups will sound the same in a Les Paul made of Mahogany, and they will sound the same in a King V made of Alder.
don't you think body shape also plays a factor in the sound? a strat type body would resonate slightly different then a flying V, or am I wrong to think that?

Actives have a more focused note definition while the passives are more airy and warm sounding. It depends on what you play that will determine what you need for a certain song. Neither is better for all situations, if there was one superior pickup then that is all that would exist. But reality is both are still produced for good reason so it's up to the player to decide what they want or like.
To really test pickups at their full potential, you need to test them on a neutral amp (Line 6 is not a good choice just IMO), by using different combos with the 3 basics tone ( bass, mid, treble) which he doesn't do. EMGs may have an aweful tone like the may have a killer and unique tone when its well configurated. This video is subjective because his way to setup his stuff is more on the advantage of the Seymour Duncan.
It really depends what u r playing, music wise, i find the sd had better clean and brighter but tinny on the gain. Especially for the downtuned low end, id use the Emgs but thats just me i guess...
It all depends on perception,if your playing tube or solidstate ,and the sound you strive for every time you plug in.For a clean solo it could be a clean hot pickup, but for the rhythm it could be a Lynch sound your after-point is:don't discount either for being valuable.
It def couldn't hurt to have both in your arsenal. But to say either is stupid is to make yourself look ignorant.
hey can someone help me out? i have a jackson guitar with CVR2 Humbuckers - factory pickups - and every time i stop playing i get alot of noise after i stop playing. if i get EMG or Seymour Duncan pickups, will the sound go away? (excuse my noob question)
@Zero10814 The EMG's im told are absolutly soundless, but to solve your noise problem try lowering the pickup from the strings. Trust me, i have the same pickups in my warrior
@Zero10814 Get a noise cancellation pedal to stop that from happening. Sometimes buzz is inevitable. For example, I play single coils and there will be buzz but with a noise cancellation pedal, i don't hear it.
@joseenriqueof I use a dimebucker in the bridge and invader in the neck! Love it they sound great! What isn't mention is that the tone you get depends on what capacitors you use... I use .47 orange caps sound great!
I'm thinking of putting new pickups in my explorer, and i don't like active pickups. Do you think it would be a good idea to put a Seymour Duncan invader in the Bridge, and a Pearly Gates in the neck. Or would i be better off putting another high output pickup like the 'full shred' or the JB in the bridge
Ive been using the jb in all my guitars for 20 years now and i love them.they scream like a bitch with harmonics. they were originally made for jeff beck and he wanted the hottest humbucker possibly made and seymour duncan delivered. randy rhoads fell in love with them and they are still the best pickups for metal to this day. ive tried dimes/dimarzios/actives everything and i allways go back to the jb.
If the audio capture could be made with the guitar recorded in line, I probably could had a better listening to see the diferences between the two pickups. With a PC microfone, it's impossible, due to the fact that it cut off the low frequencies and emphasizes the higher, treble frequencies. It's like a "Bees Box".
Personally I'm seeing a lot of fags say there's a difference in the tone displayed in the video.
The guy has a really shitty amp and shitty camera. Because of these problems, you can't notice a tonal difference as much as you think you do.
In reality, people are saying (insert brand name here) is better because they are fooling themselves or just saying that to feel that their buy was superior.
@Lobo777x you wanna waste time with batteries and one brand of pickup be my guest. actives are for people who wanna make guitar easier to play real skilled musicians use passives
you love sliding, don't you.. ;) i mean few times is more than enough in half minute, but every first riff, dude you gotta cool down a little bitt, cuz people think thats annoying!
What a EMG hater if you notice at the end on clean he uses a better clean channel for the duncans you can hear the echo which makes for a better clean.
@ziggassedup everything depends on the type of sound you're looking for heavy, hard rock, punk etc etc. The microphones are designed to provide the highest quality of any of these styles : )
Yes you used guitars made from the same wood, same bridges, same amp, same strings. A good comparison... but the audio quality is shite, this should be one of the most important things so we can clearly hear the exact tone and i can hear a good difference but mate, you should have recorded it properly
@Althrash But I could notice the differences. Yes, the quality could still be better. But this made it clear for me which ones I prefer and the answer is passives. I need that funky twangy punchy hard rockin' sound. EMGs have no twang, that's ok but not for me. I preferred their cleans a little to passives. Passives should need chorus or something when played on clean, it sounded a bit dry.
Don't know why so many refs to the camera...duh...obviously the sound is what we are looking for here, and if you want to do comparisons, you gotta turn off the camera mic, and directly input the sound from a board, or your amp. In other words, how can anybody make ANY sound comparisons with that sort of recording?
The emgs have a more ballsy tone but the duncans are pretty sick I have a emg 81 and 89 in my schecter and my dad has a Duncan sh-4 in his Gibson Les Paul.
The emgs have a brighter tone while the duncans are just kick your ass.The clean tone for emgs? WAY BETTTER then duncans. The distortion? well both good for metal but emgs better for solos. The duncans i do think have a bettter rythym tone though. In my opinion I would take (emgs)
hey, I have a guitar that has EMGs, and when they we're installed, he put a cheap looking 9v battery for them and it didn't really sound that great. But now after a year, I finally bought a new 9v battery, a very good brand this time, and the tone was absolutely jaw dropping!! Could it be because the quality of the battery matters, or could it be because the earlier battery maybe had already been used a little?
this is all irrelevant because who knows what microphone hes recording this shit through. If you dont play through these pickups on your own it doesnt matter. use your own ear.
@ChickenHamo Well it would look bad, and emg's aren't for the best neck pickups. They're ok, but seymour duncans seem to sound good with the neck and the bridge. So the real decition is, which bridge pickup you like better and is it worth not having the neck sound of the other pickup.
i'm quite noob when it comes to pickups.. i have a question, i have a kramer pacer classic which was around 400 dollars and my first guitar which was like 100 bucks they sound exactly the same
i was thinking about buying a guitar which has Dimarzio tone zone and evolution pick ups in it. will it even sound any more differently? small or big difference?
So the Seymour Duncans are passive, and offer a brighter sound compared to the active EMGs? The damn audio quality isn't very good, but it seems that way.
@gunsNSnakepits Hmm maybe on some of his guitars. not sure though. but according to the sd website mustaine plays sds. but idk about chris broderick. i think he plays sds.
@Madbutcher305 seymour duncans give a thrash tone? i completely disagree. all the thrash metal bands like megadeth, metallica, slayer, and anthrax use the emgs. emgs are perfect for thrash. the sds are good for hard rock and heavy metal. there good for playin ozzy or dokken and bands like those.
pls someone tell me does an active pickup actually drain power from a battery or does the battery recharge itself it may sound like a silly question but im interessted.
i prefer the emgs cuz their louder, brighter, and more agressive. the sds sound good but i think that it delivers too weak of a tone. it dosent punch ya in the stomach like the emgs do. and i think the emgs are more trebly. but thats my opinion
Ehh, I would say the opposite, in a way. The Jackson is definitely brighter, but brings more of a thrash tone than the darker one presented by the EMGs.
@JOHNANDYOK0 5 9V batterys a week? LOL ROFL someones never had EMGs. one 9V battery = 3000 hours. LAst time I checked it was impossible to play for 3000 hours in 4 months let alone 1 week LMAO
The biggest factor was omitted.. Jacksons have the bridge humbucker routed further away from the bridge than ESP guitars in general. Therefore the tone will be darker with Jacksons all other things equal.
to everyone, I am sorry for the comments I said about this persons style of music. everyone has the right to like and play their own kind of music even if i don't like it. so again, I am indeed sorry.
@fallnreverse16 So true! I have two of the exact same guitars but one has an emg (PRS SE One) no tone whatsoever compared to my SE singlecut with stock pickups! And don't even get me started on my jackson with passive emgs, weakest pickups ever.
Passive pickups emit a far more powerful magnetic field than actives, and the result usually is a much brighter tone which becomes can become a little bit muddied by over saturation when playing rhythmic metal parts like in this video. EMGs are often preferred by metal rhythm players because of this, but that's not to say that actives are only good for this style and passives are not. It's down to taste, and both can be as diverse tonally as the person playing the guitar.
where can i buy the jb tb-4 and jb sh-4?

Dude you jam!

@ChickenHamo Well it would look bad, and emg's aren't for the best neck pickups. They're ok, but seymour duncans seem to sound good with the neck and the bridge. So the real decition is, which bridge pickup you like better and is it worth not having the neck sound of the other pickup.

i go passive....I have more to worry about than the strenght of my fkn battery strenght.

both pick ups sound good

i'm quite noob when it comes to pickups.. i have a question, i have a kramer pacer classic which was around 400 dollars and my first guitar which was like 100 bucks they sound exactly the same
i was thinking about buying a guitar which has Dimarzio tone zone and evolution pick ups in it. will it even sound any more differently? small or big difference?

So the Seymour Duncans are passive, and offer a brighter sound compared to the active EMGs? The damn audio quality isn't very good, but it seems that way.
neoncyte 7 months ago
@gunsNSnakepits Hmm maybe on some of his guitars. not sure though. but according to the sd website mustaine plays sds. but idk about chris broderick. i think he plays sds.
paigeguitarplayer 7 months ago
@Madbutcher305 seymour duncans give a thrash tone? i completely disagree. all the thrash metal bands like megadeth, metallica, slayer, and anthrax use the emgs. emgs are perfect for thrash. the sds are good for hard rock and heavy metal. there good for playin ozzy or dokken and bands like those.
paigeguitarplayer 7 months ago
@paigeguitarplayer Well doesn't Dave Mustaine use SD's? He even has a signature line...

HI.THanks for demo. Please tell me wich passive Seynour Duncan pickup will you recomended for basswod body guitars???
I play mostly progressive metal and i'm using Marshall amps.
Thanks.

You should compare emg's to SD blackouts.

pls someone tell me does an active pickup actually drain power from a battery or does the battery recharge itself it may sound like a silly question but im interessted.
dantheamazingful 7 months ago
@dantheamazingful
There's a 9-Volt battery in the guitar cavity. It drains pretty slow, so I'm told.
dougefresh091 7 months ago
i prefer the emgs cuz their louder, brighter, and more agressive. the sds sound good but i think that it delivers too weak of a tone. it dosent punch ya in the stomach like the emgs do. and i think the emgs are more trebly. but thats my opinion
paigeguitarplayer 7 months ago
@paigeguitarplayer
Ehh, I would say the opposite, in a way. The Jackson is definitely brighter, but brings more of a thrash tone than the darker one presented by the EMGs.
Madbutcher305 7 months ago
Go with Duncans emg pick ups are active..they drain batteries.play every day you will go through 5 9 volts a week..
JOHNANDYOK0 7 months ago
@JOHNANDYOK0 5 9V batterys a week? LOL ROFL someones never had EMGs. one 9V battery = 3000 hours. LAst time I checked it was impossible to play for 3000 hours in 4 months let alone 1 week LMAO
s3177000 7 months ago
@JOHNANDYOK0 take the cord out of the input jack when your finished playing. :)

how much is it to get emg's installed. im going to get two single ones. and one humbucker.
bullsnake505 7 months ago
The biggest factor was omitted.. Jacksons have the bridge humbucker routed further away from the bridge than ESP guitars in general. Therefore the tone will be darker with Jacksons all other things equal.

to everyone, I am sorry for the comments I said about this persons style of music. everyone has the right to like and play their own kind of music even if i don't like it. so again, I am indeed sorry.

Killer Riffs.
Enjuto16 7 months ago
Active EMGs kill dynamics and kind of makes the sound flat. Passive pickups in my opinion are waaay better sounding and no need for a battery.

you have an ESP, you have a JACKSON, dude, please, buy a better camera

emg's are noiseless but have no tone there only good for shreadind for the noiseless
fallnreverse16 7 months ago
@fallnreverse16 So true! I have two of the exact same guitars but one has an emg (PRS SE One) no tone whatsoever compared to my SE singlecut with stock pickups! And don't even get me started on my jackson with passive emgs, weakest pickups ever.
antiemo9 4 months ago
Those pickups in the Rhoades sound amazing.
TrippyTheShroom 7 months ago
i totally dig your jackson with passive duncan pups. they sound amazing
daradidam 7 months ago
that sliding down the neck is really aggravating ..it like torture to me please dont make no more videos with a slide in it. and gees this sucks ..
whatsmyname252 8 months ago
Passive pickups emit a far more powerful magnetic field than actives, and the result usually is a much brighter tone which becomes can become a little bit muddied by over saturation when playing rhythmic metal parts like in this video. EMGs are often preferred by metal rhythm players because of this, but that's not to say that actives are only good for this style and passives are not. It's down to taste, and both can be as diverse tonally as the person playing the guitar.
