  • it's a capacitive screen so im sure it able of doing that, idk why t mobile didnt put it on more of the software like web browser, and photo zooming

  • And the reason it is not already implemented is because of legal issues with apple...damn apple...

  • Capacitive.

  • the iphone uses a capacitive touch screen. it is heat sensitive (that's how it can tell if it is a real living thing) and can go up to 3 fingers. all android phones are capacitive touch screen so that means iphone and android uses the same touch screen. with a custom rom, android can have full touch screen like i do. BTW touch resistive means you need pressure to activate the touch screen like windows mobile devices. the devices come with a stylus. stop being a douche bag and learn something.

  • very glitchy

  • This just shows that the projection-type touch technology used by the G1 is able to provide similar multi-touch functionality to the iPhone's capacitance-type touch screen. Okay, so it starts with an ugly hack, but now I'm using the latest custom firmware, it's great to have pinch-to-zoom on my browser. =D

    Your work is thoroughly appreciated.

  • theres alot of stupid asses commenting this video

it is multi touch people flash jfv1.41 and you'll see

  • It's awesome to think you can have multi touch on a cell phone...with the HUGE screen and all, I can totally understand why one would need to use more than one finger at a time.

  • hey where'd you get that screen protecter/??

  • ok its just a app you download.

  • nice it shows the g1 has endless possibilities.... a plus for sharing

  • so... without looking up how you did it, i think you just alternate between the two points. so it's not actually "multitouch". it COULD work, i guess... but it'll never be the same as apple's multitouch technology where it really does simultaneously track two points. don't get me wrong, my G1 will be here tomorrow, and i'm a nerd who loves the open OS philosophy. but this isn't multitouch.

  • Next time, please take 2 seconds to read what is going on behind the scenes before your publicly expose yourself as a long-winded idiot.

  • I would sure love to go reading through a bunch of code after a 10 hour day of work, instead of doing something entertaining before i go to sleep. i'll get right on that one, chief. on second thought, why don't you just shut the fuck up and don't get so defensive over your shitty, half-assed program just because you're ugly and have no friends. i love e-warriors like you who wouldn't be half as rude to people in person because you're scarred for life from being picked on so much in high school.

  • Wow. You are as relentless as you are stupid.

You didn't need to read any code to get your answer. Reading two or three comments on the same pages as this one would have given you your answer.

Your theory was not only the dumbest thing I've heard (how can a device "jump between two points" but not be able to track two points simultaneously?) - it's also not a new theory and I replied to someone above about the exact same thing.

Please take your medication before getting on the internet.

  • i have debug logs of your brain and i'm sure you're dumb. You can see video proving that above...

  • *sigh*

I would hope that if I were able to "make" someone post troll comments, I would also have the power to "make" them use proper spelling and to sound like they were smarter than a 9-year old.

  • would be great!!!

  • is there anyway to make an app using this multi-touch concept because im tired of iphone fanboys denying this capability

  • iphone fan boys still can't copy and paste.

  • 1. To the guy below me, I'm not a hater. But I do have a critical eye.

    2. Theory A could be that it works! Great!

Theory B could be that the reason dots appear instead of lines is because the screen is detecting which finger is applying the most amount of weight at that time.

    I mean well, I don't like Macs. I own a G1, but this doesn't look like multi-touch.

  • your scenario #2 would involve a pretty crazy level of dexterity that i simply do not have.

Plus, the fact that prior to making this video I posted a detailed log showing how the driver reports 2 fingers simultaneously along with their locations kind of proves that it DOES track 2 fingers.

The reason it does dots instead of lines is because I was lazy.

  • Sorry, my bad. My theory was lazy too. Lazy theories. sheesh.

  • But if you did do this...then show us G1 users how to hack it...

I'm pretty sure that you need to download the SDK and enable USB debugging and that crap...but...tell us how to hack it if you're so smart

This sjhould be good. ',: )

  • The instructions and source code has been posted for almost a month now.

  • wow.........I feel very awkward

but at least make abother video of how to do it...... I'm too lazy to read and stuff...hahaha

  • wow lots of haters on here. who cares if its not real? i just say looks cool good luck, hope to see multi touch in the future. have a nice day.

  • do you have a cover or something on there? its shiny.....should I get black or white?

  • WHITEE

white looks better "higher class"" ;]

  • i just got this g1 yesterday it's off the hook niceee

  • when did u order my mom orderd last week like monday and it still aint came

  • he haz the invisible shield on his g1... its shiny =0

  • first flash now this OMG this phone is f****king crazy now only if it had flash (for cam.) and video cap. but not too worried about that!

  • That is some great stuff "ryebrye"! I am excited to see what becomes of this :)

  • every time it shows something x or y cordinates of two "lines" are same.. can author explain that???

chapin, i'll f*** u in the a** if you try to talk to me like that again!

  • I'm not sure where in the video you think it shows X or Y coordinates...

Actually. I'm quite sure it shows no X / Y coordinates of the lines ANYWHERE - so I can't speak to what you are seeing.

In the debug logs posted earlier here, you will see something like this:

    [ 561.270546] x 677, y 3857, z 68, w 11, F 2, 2nd: x 2867, y 1170, z 68, w 11, F 2, dx 0, dy 0

Which shows for a single time the two fingers it is tracking and their respective x / y locations.

  • starting from 18th second, you want to draw a line - it draws a line with y cordinate of your right finger and x cordinate of left finger... it's obvious and there nothing to explain here.. i doubt if you're so bad at programming that you "just had some mistaked in program"...

  • Nice work man! This is a great step forward for the G1. This can open a lot of doors down the road as this OS is explored further. Great things to come.

  • The G1 is a single touch phone..hes proving that it can be multi-touch

  • shut the fuck a muthafucka i guess i you are the idiot please make sure you understand the video before you post a comment dumb ass

  • The video is a proof of concept... meaning... it proves the concept that the G1 can be used as a multitouch device.

Your comment seems to prove that you are not very technically savvy.

  • yes, yes, yes, i don't care if it multitouch or not unless someone writes a normal app working in moulitouch - and i don't understand why it shouldn't be multitouch..

the question is that i met a lot of articles which says it can be multitouch based on this video..

  • My guess is the phone is not doing it with multytouch its just doing it in code, where the touch screen gets the midle of your 2 fingers and then makes dots at the very sides, u always put one finger down first, so it understand from there how to behave.

  • Well, that's a good guess - but your guess is wrong. The phone reports two finger presses.

  • That is interesting then.

  • 1- They might come out with a newer version, but that will be a long while.

2- Yes, it comes stock w/ a usb cord to put in your music & whatever else you'd want to.

3- Yes in the app market there's a special place to download games for it. (:

4- The extra cost for texting & internet is $25 for full/unlimited internet & 400 texts.

$35 for full/unlimited internet & unlimited texts. It will not mess w/ you family plan at all, because that's what I have also and I've got the G1 and no probs here. (:

  • barely works...

  • As I said above (and in the video itself) this is just a very ugly hack to prove a point visually that was already proven by analyzing the driver. Performance will be smooth when we implement the multitouch support properly.

The main point of the video was to also help drump up some developer interest and help to create such a solution.

  • Best band, best album, best song. Well done!

Oh, and the phone thing is neat too... =)

  • Pink floyd!

  • Pink Floyd!

  • i think that's it. normally it would be like a trackpad, where two fingers screw up the mouse (screen in this case.) this software finds a second line (in this case the red line), so that's multi-touch.

apple can't sue the third-party, so i can't wait to see everyone bite for this.

  • your G1 looks glossy... what do you have on it?

  • thats what Ivisible Shield looks like when it's on.

  • ocwicked - if you read his blog post, he describes in detail what he did to get this - (google rye brye) - it was commented out in the code of android but the hardware supports it. We need to get ahead of the good code and code up action detection as long as the update is ~20-30 Hz and the driver is reliable, I bet we could get the tracking and actions down pretty fast :-)

  • i hope this is true but this video doesn't prove anything at all. all it doing is putting down is a bunch of dots which means that it keeps going back and forth between fingers therefore just leaving dots if it were really multi touch it would be a solid line not a bunch of dots put together. now im not saying its not possible but im just saying what it looks like to me as i own this phone too i wish they would really make it work jus my 2cents

  • Read the earlier blog post. This is just an early 'proof of concept' hack - not a refined finished product. The multitouch was proven by my earlier post, and is demonstrated in this post.

  • i have read man but im just say what its doing im not saying its not posible sorry if you thought i was dogging you but i wasnt sorry if it came out the wrong way.

  • Awesome. I think the one thing that made me a bit upset about the G1 was the lack of multi-touch. (Other than the headphone jack, but then again, I have an iPod for music). But, this has me really excited about what else could be done for the G1. I've seen what the graphic capabilities can be, I've seen some good games, but this could take all of it somewhere else.

  • Awesome!

  • Sweet!
