I hate when people get so into guitar when the guitarist is playing power chords.

It always happens. Someone does something much more technically and musical difficult and might not nail it perfect, and only a few people clap or cheer. But once they hear those Green Day chords or some other average band they go nuts and start clapping... like wtf.
