that's a nice engine and train. i think it's a great idea to have a layout on the floor. there's more you can do with the camera and such. that's what i did with mine
great video mate, i know how it is to not have the space. in my flat i have to run on the dining room table so i dont have to break it down every day. drives my wife batty.
I had to install the traction drivers on my first MTH K-4. I use mine to pull hwt. Walther Pennsy passenger cars, and I always doublehead- with my other MTH K-4 or one of my BLI M1a's (4-8-2).I'll be getting a T-1 4-4-4-4 soon, so I can run second & third sections.
They're finely detailed engines, but I found programming to be a bit funky.Forget running them in DC: they draw power like there's no tomorrow. Still, they got me into modelling the PRR, for which I'm grateful.
"Putting the traction tiers on did you have any problems timing the sound back to the drivers?"
No, it wasn't a problem. I had a dealer install them for me.
BTW..the whistle isn't really a PRR Banshee whistle, but I think it's very melodic. The Bachmann K-4 I have has a more prototypical whistle, but I think it sounds like the anemic peep that you hear on British & some Euro locomotives. Give me an American 3,4, 5,or 6 chime any day. Yes, I know: I'm "ethnocentric" on train whistles.
I finally got the BLI Blue Line T-1 4-4-4-4.Installed the decoder and programmed it. She pulled an 18 car passenger train (mostly Walthers heavyweights)up a 4% grade without breaking a sweat and can go like hell. One of these days, I'll put a vid of her and the MTH K-4's working trains on the Horseshoe Curve of my layout-I promise.
As I said: thanks to MTH, I've fallen in love with the old PRR.I now know why it's the most modelled American railroad: it's a treasure trove, especially for steam.
Great video. I love the way you ramped up the speed. I have MTH PS2 with my O-gauge RR and can tell you that DCS takes control and sounds to a new level. In "O" MTH has provided double the quality at half the price vs. Lionel for so long now that a lot of us have converted 100% to MTH / DCS.
No disrespect intended, but I don't think DCS will ever be a major factor in HO. I don't see anyone going exclusively MTH on their motive power in the scale. The NMRA has worked long & hard for DCC standardization, and I think most, if not all, of us like the flexability of purchasing from several quality manufacturers. The MTH HO engines are well built and finely detailed- but I think many of the sound features of DCS might be a bit too 'toy train-ish' for most of us.
The bottom line is that while my K-4s are finely detailed, the electronics are not in sync with accepted NMRA DCC standards. You can't even reprogram them (sounds, acceleration, etc). I'm looking into having them rewired for Sunami sound.
Mike Wolf was approached by an acquaintence of mine at a recent train show. When told about the objections to the electronics, he said essentially, "Don't like it? Don't buy it." That attitude is not the way to build a loyal customer base.
Hi, beautiful video. Which system do you use? MTH's DCS? I use NCE and I can't get the nice whistle sound you seem to be able to get. I mean the sound is the same, but that nice descending fade ending you get I can only get if I hold the whistle button down for a long time, and even then I usually get that subtle two-toot ending instead of the nice fade ending I like more. Also, what camera are you using to get the great picture and sound? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you
@lingkithung They even have a Chicago Transit Authority(CTA)"L" train version too! The Chicago "L" train version! MTH sells it! What a nice layout of this train system you have!
2:54 I thought that ur train was gonna crash into that building! LOL! :P

NMRA DCC standards will stay MTH will die...
Bucking the standard adopted control system the way they did was pure marketing....and stupid.
Keeps thousands from buying their product....Brilliant move !
I would love this engine ...but not until it conforms with NMRA standards for DCC.

Don't like US family home,
my home space in Hong Kong is not enough for a layout, no solution...
so run on the floor

I all so run it on my floor. I live in a flat in Serbia and i share a room with my younger brother.

Toyish?
I think if MTH makes engines that everybody likes, such as DDA40X, Big Boys, Turbines, Cab forwards - I think they'll fit right in.
I'm not sure if MTH will be much of a hit with the ultra-modern era operators if their SD70ACE are not compatible with Athearn, Atlas, Kato etc.
