i swam against phelpps when i was 12 at the 1998 easter winter zones. he got high point winner thats all i remember and was like 6'1 at 12. he kept grwing vertically i only grew horizontally (muscles) lol.

He is incredible but I wouldn't call Thorpe a loser. Have a look at his competition back then - Hackett, Hall Jr, Van Den Hoogenband, even Rosolino was a force. Around 2000 thats when the competition was its fiercest.
Not to take anything away from Phelps, he is the best olympian, but his competition were (mostly) a bunch of randoms no one had heard of because of a talent drain - particularly in the butterfly.
@gnarkillkicksass I guess Australia has the best swimmers, Japan the best gymnasts, Korea the best skaters etc... however the USA always show their dominance. We always take those Gold medals home and thanks to Phelps he stole the show. An example would be like the Canadians vs USA in hocky, a sport in which Canadians are dominant. In 2004, Phelps raced Thorpe in Thorpe's pet event - 200 freestyle. At that time, Phelps had not raced in the 200 free very often and Phelps wasn't even at his peak (He was only 19 years old). When Thorpe tried to race Phelps in one of Phelps' best events at the 2003World Championships during the 200 IM, he finished body lengths behind Phelps. He never tried the 200 IM again. If Thorpe and Phelps raced again in Beijing, now that would have been a real showdown - both would have been @ their peak

phelps lost against thorpe in athens.thorpe is the best.thorpe is a champion and a superstar.phelps is a champion but not a superstar because nobody knows phelps in the usa whereas everybody knows thorpe in australia.thorpe is so cute and sexy whereas phelps is ugly.hahahaha lol

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy in the back 5th place....now one more thing to consider... the WR and 1st place win in Rome that Biederman handed to Phelps.. PHELPS was wearing his old speedo body suit and refused to wear the NOW illegal 80% Polyurethane body suit that practically floats on water..biederman will get OWNED in London by phelps :)

@XxSpartaxX i dont no if u swim or not but 3 months is a long time in swimming and u could drop 2 seconds in that time or you could lose 5 seconds... somehow michael found a way to not swim for 3 months and then go under 50 seconds for the 100 fly... insane

I think HE himself is insane as a talent in the water.. wasn't those three months when he was banned for the pot scandal? either way... they guy is amazing agreed? :)

@ipodfreek955 Oh ya!! i totally agree...probably a combination of both endurance training in the water as well the dryland sprint exercises..but he's all RAW natural talent too.. i know he has some age tacking on to him come this London Olympics, BUT i still think he is going to do awesome... he's already made his impression on the sport and in the history books, so i know this coming games will be a little more fun for him without the pressure :) but going for gold no less LOL peace

@gnarkillkicksass Haha losers always make escuses, good one. The truth is that Phelps won so many metals baby, he is the true Legend. Thorpe knows that he should retire since his WR won't last long. I'm just impressed by Phelps, how he stood so close to Thorpe on the freestyle which is Thorpes only specialty. Thorpe is great but Phelps is better.

He is incredible but I wouldn't call Thorpe a loser. Have a look at his competition back then - Hackett, Hall Jr, Van Den Hoogenband, even Rosolino was a force. Around 2000 thats when the competition was its fiercest.
Not to take anything away from Phelps, he is the best olympian, but his competition were (mostly) a bunch of randoms no one had heard of because of a talent drain - particularly in the butterfly.
Australia 20 mil - 20 medals
USA 300 mil - 31 medals
Aussies aren't bad for "losers".

@gnarkillkicksass I guess Australia has the best swimmers, Japan the best gymnasts, Korea the best skaters etc... however the USA always show their dominance. We always take those Gold medals home and thanks to Phelps he stole the show. An example would be like the Canadians vs USA in hocky, a sport in which Canadians are dominant. Who almost stole their gold medal at 2010? Americans of course.

Thorpe is banned from the olympics because he tested positive for steroid. Michael Phelps will probably get away with using steroids because he can afford the better human growth hormone, you know the ones that can't be tested.

Mate, don't make claims that are unsubstantiated. FINA alleged Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority had found Thorpe had no case to answer.
A sample was taken in May 06 and notified him in April 07. He had already retired in Nov 06. Get your facts right jackass.

Its like allowing the Star of Olympics Usain Bolt to run same 100-200 meters 5 times just swinging arms slightly different each time..chuck in 3 shitty relays to complete the farce. Bolt smashed long standing records in the #1 event

Exactly! Thorpe's 5 golds (3 individual) does not compare to Phelps' 14 golds (9 individual). Thorpe backed off from the challenge and quit way too early.

In 2004, Phelps raced Thorpe in Thorpe's pet event - 200 freestyle. At that time, Phelps had not raced in the 200 free very often and Phelps wasn't even at his peak (He was only 19 years old). When Thorpe tried to race Phelps in one of Phelps' best events at the 2003World Championships during the 200 IM, he finished body lengths behind Phelps. He never tried the 200 IM again. If Thorpe and Phelps raced again in Beijing, now that would have been a real showdown - both would have been @ their peak

If you have ever swam before you would know more than that. If Boly ran and won the hurdles and every distance race then he would have a chacne to talk. But there is a huge difference between each event and how it is swam.
