  • I'll add something: some of the comments here are so negative. Shame on you, folks, who may know a little thing, or two about music IN THEORY, but still don't know how to LISTEN to music.

Vengerov IS music. He is music. You don't like his face? Go somewhere else, but make no noise. How relevant is that? This man IS music. If you can't see it, be quite, leave, then come back in a few years. Don't leave words here that will shame you forever!

  • Oh, Vengerov, you're so fantastic! I only have one complain about this video/concert: I wasn't there! How I'd have loved to see it live! Fantastic.

I've seen Vengerov playing Brams sonatas in Brussels. He's a fantastic person. He's wonderful. And, on top of it all, such a great, great artist!

Vengerov, thank you for so many fantastic performances! You make this world a better place!

  • Not only the most brilliant violinist of our time but also fascinating to watch for the way he enfolds himself into the music. Astonishing.

  • Lo escucho una y otra vez, y no me canso... gracias Sibelius, gracias Vengerov.

  • ¡¡¡Maravillosa interpretación!!!

Vengerov es pasión en estado puro.

  • Amazing connection with Symphony. He is lost in Brilliance....Bravo.

  • When I see Vengerov perform, I see a showman. Wonderful piece. Wonderful rendition!

  • great performance for VENGEROV.

and a big BRAVO to BAREMBOIM, the ORCHESTRA and mainly to...SIBELIUS!!

  • la migliore interpretazione di questo movimento su you tube!

  • Never mind his facial contorsions, his playing - his intonantion, his phrasing, his sound quality - is wonderful!!!

  • extremely beautiful ....

Among this sibelius concertoes, best version it is !

    can't help keep listening to vengerov's ....

  • Yep, blessings on dzidkonia for giving us these. I appreciate it entirely. This is massive music folks. This man is SO inside Sibelius. His soloing is completely unlike any of the others - he is on a different plane altogether. I love each violinist here, Batiashvilli, Hahn, the others. But Vengerov, OH MY GOD!

  • Then you will squirt squirrrrrt it. Schickk.

  • Yes, I get it.A young lady who would be ready to spread her legs.

  • This man is blowing his wad all over Sibelius and Barenboim. This is awesome! I feel like I need to grab a well-proportioned young lady and a bottle wine to enjoy this even more!

  • even with volume at full blast its tough to hear :/

  • Superb!!

  • o my God!words are nothing, nothing!just listen, listen this.when we all die, this remains...i don´t know, how you all can compare, make opinions in face of musik, this musik!and this playing.i don´t catch it.

  • Great......

  • c très facil de critiquer les personne qui jouent, ce qui né pas facil c de mettre toute son ame dans la musique et senfoutre de vos critiques,, Respect pour cette interprétation merveilleuse

  • *uses

  • I love his playing. It's amazing how he use every single inch of his bow. Wonderful.

  • Comments should be done with responsibility and humility, and above all, respecting the artists. No one who writes here can be better than one performing here. Many of those who write here commentaries are preposterous to hide their ignorance and frustration. My God! how they would like to play like one of these soloists. Please!!! Step on earth!!!

  • If you see videos of Vengerov playing when he was a kid, he was already doing faces, which ONLY means that's the way he expresses himself. If you don't like his making-faces, the solution is pretty simple: close you eyes, because what he does is Music, not videos or movies. Besides, it's very easy to notice that some people commenting have some grudge against him, as if they'd knew him in person, which I seriously doubt.

  • So please, relax: you CAN choose. If you don't like this version, you can listen another one... and there are several! Oistrakh, Ferras, Hahn, Vengerov and many others. Who told you it's mandatory to listen only this one? Or who told you there's only one rightful, absolute, undisputed way to play this Concerto? That's nonsense! And be careful about hates and grudges: those feelings are not good in any way whatsoever, and that's not even my opinion: it's just a plain fact. Long live Sibelius!!!

  • It's a great performance, but for some reason the video keeps pausing every 10 to 15 seconds.

  • i really like his dynamics

  • Vengerov is the only person I have seen or heard who plays the beginning section entirely on the G String which gives his tone an incredible muted touch on the high notes. If you ever actually purchase this recording which is included in Vengerov's box set and listen to the normalized sound you can hear just how amazing he actually plays this movement, but this video does little justice.

  • WHAT!!!!! mediocre effort!!! wtf...c´mon people what are you saying!!?? these are just brilliant musicians trying to please and entertain you and the way you repay them is by calling them mediocre?!?!?...losers...

  • @Jedum Well said. Plus, Maxim Vengerov is playing Stratovarius' Ex-Kreutzer and mediocre does not play get lent a Stratovarius....

  • I also have your mentioned version, and it isnt the best in my mind, listen to oistrakh and rosdedensky, ferras plays a little bit out of tune some doubble spots, and so on if you like so much ferras you should have mention the ferras karajan berlin version, so please shut up, and let reasonable people listen thihs two great musicians

  • why not normalize the sound before posting?

    it's awfully quiet!!

  • Maxim Vengerov is a true musical prodigy.

  • If people took the time to listen to Christian Ferras version under the conductor Zubin Mehta (here on youtube).

Then many would dismiss Vengerovs mediocre effort.

Barenboim (conductor) has no clue on this one, where as Mehta shows how it´s done!

  • when are you guys to understand there isnt the right version ore the refference one?? there are thoousands ways to play music and everyone of them are valid yu cn like more ferras one but you cant say vengerov is mediocre I mean I know thousands of violinst who would love to play like him

I think your cmments are getting desrespectfouls and you cant do that again you might not like this one but is a genius version ayway

  • so, but this isnt a mediocral effert, is actually a marvelous one, but ferras I am agree is fantastyc, so not because of that youc can say vengerov is mediocral, very few violinst can play like this, and the orchestra is simple fantastyc dude, you just cant talk like this is a respect falt for two great musicians

Only when you could play ore conduct only the half well this guys are doing you can talk how you are doing not before

  • real argues not this o by the way I am a violinist and have read way a lot about sibelius music I have the score the original to, and guess what the reason why it is corrected is cause he liked better the second one and also, I just love this version

  • comments with no sense

what the hell does it mean:An israelian conductor (Barenboim) and a russian violin player (Vengerov) does a really poor job and is almost destroying this piece just to make their own version.

It ´s sad., I mean dont you think thats a little bit rascist from you??

I mean the origins nothing have to do with what you do, claudio arrau was chilean and there are some really great assians performers nagano for example donst do those comments say just your opinions but wit

  • hey this is a continuation to maxhandsenk!!

third you cant compare you to sibelius and in anycase are you availabable to say that you understand music from sibelius better than one of the greatest music genius of our time Baremboim!!, maybe you could say something about vengerov, but about beremboim mm I dont think so and hey guess what ?? your comments doesnt make anysense talk about real spots so we can discous, you know?? I just think you are a fascist discriminaiting this version just becaus

  • Good judgement semisavage!

You are in excellent company too! Most violin-expersts think Ferras version of Sibelius violin concerto is the best there is!

If people took the time to listen to Christian Ferras version under the conductor Zubin Mehta here on youtube - Many would dismiss Vengerovs mediocre effort.

  • are you pro-critical for a classical music magazine ? Everyone knows that Ferras is the greatest sibelius concerto player but you can't say "mediocre".. Vengerov is one of the best player and his performance is amazing, he have his style, respect this or send your cv carreer or your grades to qualify Vengerov's performance as mediocre !!

  • I am a Scandinavian myself, just like Jean Sibelius.

This violinconcert does not show the things Sibelius intended to display with this violin-masterpiece.

It is simply to tame! It does not reflect on nordic soul at all!!

I am sure Sibelius would turn in his grave if he knew people actually liked Vengerovs version...

An israelian conductor (Barenboim) and a russian violin player (Vengerov) does a really poor job and is almost destroying this piece just to make their own version.

    It ´s sad.

  • hey dude,

ok just say I dont like it, and aybody would attack you but you did make serious mistakes.

Ok first that all Sibelius was a symbol and still being from Finland., second if Finland is in the scandinavian zone of europe ore what ever, that doesnt mean that they have the same culture is almost as affensive as saying japanese is the same than chinese. Grieg was noregean also scandivian I guess,, but his music has nothing to do with sibelius they are completely diferent cultures with

  • Vengerov has the amazing capability to deliver the max dynamic range of violin (very hard on i.e. high G & E string/any near-bridge) with great colors & depths (important especially when playing with an orchestra) Therefore, 1. his interpretation has greater contrast & therefore, better effect of mood changes. 2. He also has great techniques. These two elements are what I'm looking for when I listen to a violinist. He clearly gives me both well. I think even Heifetz would respect him a lot!

  • first of all when did i ever deny your love of the violin.. i merely doubt the credibility of your statement when you can write off the musical seriousness of an accepted genius so easily, with so obviously personal and unsourced evidence.. if you would take the time to read your comment again you will see that you need to take the care to present your opinions as opinions and not as facts! my dear friend, not even the most respected music critics in the world would dream of doing this...

  • also in future if your replies are directed at me, could you please reply to MY comment instead of making a general one so that i am notifed!! or would i be right in thinking you are trying to avoid confrotation because you know you are in the wrong but are too proud to admit it..?? please grow up..

  • I am a Scandinavian. I have studied Sibelius music.

Vengerov (and Barenboim) are abusing this wonderful violin concerto! I know, because this was not the first version played. First version is more complicated and difficult to master.

Vengerov is slowing it down...Playing too softly, and also still makes monkey faces - Ridicuolus faces! He didn´t do that when he was young so it is a learned behaviour.

VENGEROV IS MOST OVERRATED VIOLIN PLAYER IN MODERN TIMES!

  • maybe his facial expressions grew with his understanding and love of music.. did you ever think of that??

  • Lighten up! If you don't like it go wank away to your first version.

  • Oh! Bad language. No need for that. Discuss nicely please!

  • ...I feel like this movement is meant to be played in a "tame" way. It's not really that intense in the first place, unless you make it so.

  • who could take you seriously when you base your opinions solely on youtube recordings..?!? fair enough everyone is entitled to their own opinions but who are you to make such strong accusations..? vengerov is a supreme artist nobody can deny that, when you can play like him then maybe you could get away with such audacity.. but until that day, keep your ignorant thoughts to yourself please!!

  • Give it a break. Stop attacking someone for their opinion. If you disagree maybe you could argue THAT and back it up a little yourself.

  • the thing is, it wasn't an opinion, it was an attack.. i find opinions interesting but some of your comments were irrelevent and just plain offensive! sometimes it is better not to share all your thoughts as sure nobody found your comment helpful and if not to help people what good is there in sharing opinion?!... ask yourself that.

  • of course this is directed at maxhansendk...

  • Your comment is absolute rubbish. Hilary Hahn isn't in the same league as Maxim Vengerov (in terms of Sibelius). Vengerov is so, so original, and his tone is just UNBEATABLE. Christian Ferras isn't a musician, just a mushy, emotional idiot who doesn't know when to stop crying!

  • Dear Max,

Why instead? Why not listen to either?I enjoyed Christian Ferras' rendition immensely but prefer that of Vengerov. Ferras is "your" musician, Vengerov is "mine". Tastes differ, don't they? But to say he is mediocre is to deny the undeniable fact. Be fair!

  • Perfect, mature performance! And Daniel Barenboim's conducting is so delicate.

    The recording is very good,too.

  • This is a very tame performance for me. Not bad, absolutely not! But mediocre...

Listen instead to Christian Ferras version of Sibelius!

    Also Oistrakh is much better!

Sorry Vengerov but you sound very casual and mediocre here.

  • mediocre ajajajajajajaajaa sorry but you aren¨t concious what are you saying this is the best performance of sibelius violin concerto vengerov is a great musician very passioned and mature you should have respect for him

  • La musique de Sibélius est très nostalgique.

    Cet adagio est superbement interprété.

    Merci

  • great song...

  • i didnt know it was a song, i didnt see anyone singing...?

  • sublime octaves!!!!

  • Wow. His sound is gorgeous and what musicality!

  • Wonderfully done.

That slide really took me, head over heals.

    :D

  • amazing...

  • Wonderfull sound!!! nothing to say!!!

  • Beautiful piece and it is played exquisitely. It's a shame that some people find Mxim's facial tics so distracting. I should say I find the distracting as well, so I just listen instead of watching.

  • I just listen, too :)

  • I don't find it distracting at all. It actually helps me understand his interpretation even better. When you are at his level of concentration, flying away with the music you are playing, you lose control over your own body and it goes with the music. If you or him try to hold it back it will certainly affect the quality of the performance.

  • You're probably right. Good thing he isn't a drooler.

  • the reason i don't find his movements distracting is because it is so natural and not forced in the least. there is nothing artificial about his playing or moving, and that is why i find his performing so incredibly amazing and powerful.

  • He plays so beautifully this Heifetz slide on 8:47 :0

  • Although I find this one a very good performance of the Sibelius concerto, I just can't take out of my mind Oistrakh's rendition.

  • eccezzionale.maxim, sei un grande violinista e sai rendere quello che suoni ancora piu' affascinante, grazie al tuo carisma.

  • I'm not sure the orchestra here--Chicago-- is the best choice.

  • hm,hm,i take my words back.Ferras performance is better.i´m sorry.

  • i don´t understand,why somebody speaks about Ferras?hm...how do you think,who is better,Elman or Kulenkampf?it´s ridiculous.there is no The One,the best.there is only music.or not:)))

  • what a bowing!one line from first note untill the end.great,really.just may be to low recording level.don´t know, sounds here, like not normalised.tnk very much!

  • i admire his passion and sincerity which he brings to his music. would that he move and tense up less, however...

  • very vengerov, you hate him sometimes, sometimes not...

    i like it though

  • Ey whats wrong wth you guys. It is his opinion and mine too why da hell does he get negatives?

  • I also prefer Ferras' performance.

  • Nice contrast between the second and third part. I really enjoyed that version even though I doesn't usually like Vengerov's style so much. But this was one of the best interpretations of this part that I've ever heared. Unfortunately I can't say the same as listening to the finale...

  • Please, listen to Kavakos, Ferras or Oistrakh and then you'll know what is this concert about...

  • they move a lot because

    when you read music

you have to look beyond the page

    and feel the piece

it's called the "red"of the music

  • Beautiful interpretation of this mvt. People often describe this cocerto as icy but I've always found it fiery and passionate especially this mvt. Great playing!

  • Listen to Ferras's recording. You will not be able to listen to shit like this after that experience.

  • Looks like someone in here knows what they're talking about

  • Are you joking? Regardless of your obvious poor taste, it'd be hard to realistically describe anything of this level of playing as "shit," and not just saying "I don't like this interpretation."

Act like a decent human being maybe?

  • the only person that has poor taste is you. Please take Maxim's cock out of your mouth.

  • I really can not understand why the fuck people love so much to this guy, he's a good violin player, a nice person but we can find much more interesting musicians nowadays in my opinion, and Ferras did an astonishing performance of this concerto...I was lucky enough to see his strad " Kochansky " and my legs were shaking knowing that that violin have played such incredible concerto.

  • He's a GREAT violin player. Ferras is a great player as well. Maxim just always plays things the way I would interpret them.

    Legs were shaking? Lameeeeee.

  • I will be enough elegant to don't answer that comment. Enjoy your Sibelius.

  • I'm done with you. What are you, like 12?

  • damn baby

  • I believe he makes the music come to life when he uses movement of the entire body.

I love this piece, it's very nice and slow and relaxes you. After having fatigue for a week, this piece made me finally fall asleep.

  • very nice music clip but a little low the volumen

  • As usual Maxim Vengerov is wonderful. Really thank´s for the clip

  • stupid get out of you tube, insane.

  • if anybody dare say maxim does not play with soul.. think again

  • perfect. just perfect.

  • one of the most touching and intimate readings ive ever come across of the sibelius adagio from the concerto. Exquisite soft playing - so often overlooked today. Maxim always gives something special to his listeners - thats why he is a star!

  • so beautiful...maxim is the best

  • I`m not one of the Maxim`s music lover nor hater, but this performance of Sibelius is just...The One.Very deep expression and amazing misical idea

  • I'm pretty sure if any of the Maxim haters could make music anywhere near as beautiful as this, they'd be making faces while they played too.

  • nope... heifetz plays this piece much more beautifully than vengerov and he doesn't make gay faces

  • If you played the violin i dont think you'll be standing on stage like a statute, looking like a plain old idiot, with a blank face. Just listen to the music.

  • lol..... you oviously have never really been into music deeply to the point where, you kno how to play it so nicely ur body moves by itself, when u can just move ur body freely, is because you have mastered the piece

  • You obviously can't read. I said that movements are good when they come naturally, but Maxim vengerov's seemed forced and exaggerated. According to you, being able to move a lot means that you have mastered the piece, if this is so, then why does Vengerov make so many errors? His movements aren't completely natural. If you really want to see some fluid and heartfelt movement then watch videos of David Oistrakh.

  • lol ill only say....... meh whatever i wont argue :S fighting over the internet is like the special people olimpics, even if you win, ure still retarded

  • You mean, if you want to see some dead, cold, and lifeless Russian early 20th century violin playing, go listen to Oistrakh.

How would you even presume to know that Maxim is "forcing" things and that it isn't natural? Do you personally know him? Thought so.

  • What the hell? DId you just say that Oistrakh is lifeless, dead, and cold? Omg, I can't believe what I just read. How could any one say that? Have you ever listened to him? You must be fucking insane, there's no other explanation. No half assed musician would ever say that Oistrakh's playing is cold and lifeless, you must be out of your mind.

  • Quite frankly, you sir, are too opinionated and need to enjoy the music.

This isn't a place for underpaid movie critics.

  • hear hear!! and how many mistakes did you hear anyway?? I think his playing is expressive and straight from the heart. Obviously he isn't going 'urgh next note, next note, next note, i... must... be... a... playing machine...' He's one of the most natural musicians i've ever seen. I put him right up there with Heifetz :D

  • You don't know a shit about Russian early 20th century violin playing. Because if you would , you would know that Vengerov's Professor was one of Oistrakh's assistant in Moscow conservatoire, Zakhar Bron.

  • I actually DO know that (don't question my knowledge of the violin, or Maxim), but do not see how that makes Oistrakh any less lifeless, or Maxim any less amazing. So way to make...no point at all!

  • You have to be retarded to write comments like that. Absolutely fucking mongol. Go to wank yourself with Vanessa Mae and Andre Rieu.

  • Not retarded, I just know how to form an argument. It usually takes a point.

And I hate Vanessa Mae and Andre Rieu much more than Oistrakh. Trust me, you don't know my taste.

Way to make yourself look bad by acting like a baby about my comment though.

  • You don't know how to form an argument if you don't know a shit about the issue to discuss. Your taste is awful, and you are insulting to music saying that about Oistrakh.

  • How did you jump to the conclusion I don't know anything about the "issue" we're discussing? Because I don't agree with you? Please, grow up.

Once again, you don't KNOW my taste, or who else I admire, so how can it be awful?

I'm insulting music by not liking a russian violinist? Oh, darn. I'll have to go call my parents and tell them they did a lousy job of raising me. (Sarcasm)

  • Yes, that would be a great idea, probably they have been paying to the wrong violin professor. We're done. Enjoy your Sibelius.

  • Please learn how to speak english. I don't play violin, I play 'cello.

  • Ok. Congratulations.

  • And yes , you're right , my written english is not very good , but with neandertals like you I don't need to use Bukowski's vocabulary. If you don't like my grammar fuck you off my friend.

  • Yes you are right with your opinion about sbelius by ferras and by vengerov...

Also vengerove has a strad and no sound comes out.

  • Barenboim is just a true master here. wow...so good

  • I love Maxim

  • What a great piece of music!

I do hope that claims like

"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by HOGAN & HARTSON RAUE LLP"

will not kill this piece as well.

Those bastards killed the beautiful Vengerov piece of Ravel's Tsigane here on YouTube!

  • it is restrained passion, thats why there is soo much emotion behind what he is doing. and violinist should be able to see this.

  • i have an even greater respect for maxim after hearing this...amazing.

  • i Agree with you the face is really should'nt be at that place but hey great playing

  • that's a pretty music!!!

    I love Sibelius

  • i recently heard sergey khachatryan perform this with ny phil with kurt masur conducting - he played beautiflly, but he was often drowned out by the orchestra - here, barenboim brilliantly balances the orchestral forces against the violin - notice how in the final forte how he holds back the orchestra while the violin soars above the orchestra - in ny, khachatryan was all but drowned out at this crucial moment - bravo on all acounts on this performance!

  • He's fantastic musician!

And when people say something bad about his playing they'r just bursting with envy!

  • i would gladly scrunch my face or pop my eyeball if i could play like that

  • I think this is brilliantly played by both orchestra and soloist. I would be making facing too if I were feeling this music. I recall Streisand, hip-hoppers, whatever making faces when they feel the music. The music is the important part and the rest is pretty much irrelevent.

  • OK the faces are entirely out of order, but he plays brilliantly. Though why so softly? Shouldnt he be producing enough sound that I dont have to turn the volume up and down depending on if the orchestra?

  • Its sibelius, he didnt want it all loud, thats why it is so good, It adds character to the piece

  • you have to see the music from another point of view. many violinists just give it, they pour their wrath out upon the secon mvt of sibelius, but this is unique, vengerov is showing restrained passion.
