  • The people of Derby could have their revenge on polling day. At Boston in Lincolnshire The entire council was voted out of office at the last local elections because they had consistantly refused to apply for a bypass for the town.

  • The official stsement is that "the building collapsed whilst repair woork was being carried out by the owner's contractor". I don't know how a court will describe this, but "Collapse"? Please - an enforcement order to restore the building is still waiting in the wings, if the Derby City Council has the courage to carry it out and force the owner to rebuild.

  • It will be gone like the Crest Hotel. A listed building in a top residential area. It mysteriously burnt down and is now a housing estate.

  • So THAT'S how you repair a historic building - I'll bear that in mind in the future.

  • it was knocked down with no permition because they didnt ask the council and that its a grade II building

  • I've not been to Derby for a while, since the early 90's, when St Peter's Street was a road still! I saw the demolition of some fine old factories (Like the one near the Midland Station) and I remember the Hippodrome well, this sort of thing, doesn't surprise me, Cinemas across the country have suffered similar fates, the same bungling obfuscation from councils. Looking at Google Earth today I see Derby is being wrecked at a rate as fast as Coventry in the war! You have my deepest sympathy.

  • i think derby council should be ashamed of themselves the way they have dealt with the destruction of the hipodrome they should demand its repaired properly not demolished

  • if those walls were as unstable as claimed it would not have taken hit after hit by that massive machine to knock them down, it would have fallen with just one knock

  • anyone can see from this, that to bring in those machines nothing is planned but demolition, or to damage beyond repair.

  • is this chap above the law, no health and safety, the council not aware what is going off, residents not informed. nearby students paid to go out for the day. where are the roofing materials for the repairs, why has there not been any scaffold put up to keep the walls safe, and surely a theatre that was a bingo hall only one year ago cannot be that unsafe that it is ready to collapse at any moment. something very dodgey going on here

  • lovetheskin'.This chap does think he's above the law because he has a fancy barrister.

He had the nerve to bring in a DEMOLITION COMPANY to 'make the roof safe' before council inspectors arrived on site.

You couldn't make this shit up if you tried.

  • the council must have known this would happen,if it could be proved they should be taken to the cleaners and made to pay for the rebuild, but there again you cant beat the council can you.a bunch of dead beats who think they know better.

  • I can just hear the alleged instructions to the bloke in the machine "this demolition, whoops sorry, repair is vital but make as much of a mess as you can I will make it worth your while"

  • Damning evidence that the owner and contractors had no intention to 'tidy up' the Hippodrome after the suspicious arson attack!!! Derby City Council and English Heritage must use film clips like this to fully prosecute those people involved in the disgraceful pantomime.Only a full restoration at the ownwers expense will do.

  • yet more of derby destroyed there is nothin left of derby as it is whos gettin the back hander 4 this .and the fire? this looks like a total scam from start to finish if u ask me

  • What gets me is they were supposed to make the roof safe!!!! erm so why the continuous demolition of the walls??? Lets hope this building is rebuilt or atleast the Front and the wall with the Round Windows retained.

  • still a dick and its part 3!

  • ANOTHER piece of Derby's heritage bites the dust while Derby's 'toytown' council sticks it's head in the sand.

It seems that Derby is 'easy pickings' when it comes to developers moving in just to make a quick profit for themselves.

So congratulations Derby Council. You got exactly what you wanted and sod the people of Derby.

May you get your rewards on polling day.
