Saul Bass was the creator of this logo. A new book about his career is out. He also created the AT&T logo, not to mention IBM as well as the poster for Vertigo and some of Otto Preminger's films.
If "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" did an animated TV Series based on the 1970 film, this would appear followed by the 1976 20th Century Fox Television logo. The theme song for the show would be "In the Long Run" sung by the Carrie Nations (The band in the movie).
This one was around for a few years, but they replaced it with a near-identical version done in CGI. You can tell because the colored swirls look a bit shiny and there is more detail in the star.
It amazes me that anyone could be afraid of this awesome logo. When I was a kid and I saw that star spinning around with all those pretty colors following it, I knew all was right with the world.
@whammy850 Same here. Thanks to youtube, I'm starting to wonder if I was the only kid who was never scared of ANY logos, let alone this one (which I actually used to look forward to!)
... *whimpers* :(

I totally forgot about this, even though, when I was very small, I thought this was the universal sign of cartoons... and I loved it!

This logo is simply timeless! There are few others I can think of that last as long as this one did.

It does have that late '70s, early '80s iconic vibe to it.
