It didn't take long before it went to hell. I was just, out looking at the north end of the yard up by route 2 next to the LA river, and you'd think it had been abandoned decades ago. 8(
. You could see part of the southern end of this yard in the movie Cheech and Chong Up & Smoke. It's an aerial view. They are driving in the 'green' van over I 5.
@Xomanowar99 Reservoir Dogs beginning scene was filmed on San Fernando Road and passes by Taylor Yard although it had been downs called quite a bit by then.
Wish my dad had his camera when we went to see it in 85 when it was still goin' strong, we came back in 86 and by then it was shut down, and didn't SP have cops chase guys off becuase of the danger of the overpasses? (yes, there were 2 of them)
hey, what year was this video shot? i worked at taylor yard till it did close down. i wasnt around back when the yard was that big. is that the old bridge that ran over san fernando road? very cool video.
well, that's not exactly correct. it was because of an oil spill, well, a few oil spills..ok the dam place leak like a sieve! The last oil leak that was the last straw leaked into the LA river and flow down stream to Long Beach Harbor. Yep, state of Calif and LA county and a whole lot of environmental people were looking to put a whole lot of UP officers in jail for this leak
Great video of Taylor - I believe that is all park land and a baseball park now. Even the engine facility is deserted. Very sad. Must of been a great place to hang out on the bridge!
By the looks of the inbound freight i have to say it came off of the Sunset Route because its very rare to see GEs run north of Bakersfield before the SP D&RGW merger
it was downgraded substantually after the opening of West Colton Yard. Colton could classify 6 cars a minute where as Taylor could classify 3 cars a minute. So ever since WC opened the yard was downsized and they pulled the plug in the early 90s which lead to the transportation meltdown of SP on the sunset route that UP is dealing with today
Well, there a few explanations as to, why. First, the UP sucks, and since the time of the takeover, operations on the UP have been nothing but a nightmare. Second, and probably the biggest reason, the Public and our society today do not want, or desire anything to do with the Railroads, they prefer that the Railraoads would all simply disappear. So far, the public is getting just what it wishes for, and thus the demise of Taylor Yard and other Railroad operations.
Oh, and lets not forget the "green" factor. Seems it is better to eliminate old branchlines, and industrial lines, and convert them into trails and scenic walkways. And now transform old Railroad yards, converting those to "beautiful" Parks, since the Railroads were sooooo "UGLY"!
TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A,-------HAS A SCENE ON THIS VERY BRIDGE--------THE MOVIE IS KICKASS TOO

I used to walk across this bridge to look at the trains when I was a kid probably in the early sixties.
I remember seeing an old steam engine parked out in the back tracks.
