The ending is what sets this film apart from almost every other movie ever made. I'm so glad this movie didn't have this ending, even though, the original ending is really heart breaking. The Great Silence is one of the greatest movies that most people will probably never see, unfortunately.
i saw this movie, wheni was oh, about 14, and thought it was tremendous..
i had been brought up on "good guy always wins" westerns, and was UTTERLY devastated at the original ending, but realised, that in life, the good guy hardlys ever wins..
I think this ending is bad because it takes away the power of the entire film. The original ending was shocking and made me feel real anger towards the antagonists (very few movies succeed in that). The Good, The Bad and The Ugly had a great ending because it was original but this film simply needed a tragic ending.
would have been cooler though if the sheriff shot the guy in the window instead so silence could shoot loco, and that grin 01:31 could have been avoided.
The version with the sad ending was apparently banned in Sweden and Finland where Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring", also containing much savage violence including an explicit rape and several murders, and his The Silence" with ten times more sex, caused hardly a raised eyebrow. Very strange!
Yeah, there is no audio track. Most spaghetti westerns were shot like that (also due to the often international cast, so each actor could speak in their own language) and then dubbed.
The bleak ending fit the themes that went B4 it. Perhaps it can be considered as silly as the alternate 'happy' ending in that BOTH R extreme.
Corbucci made the right decision to have Silence die & Loco live, anything less would have torpedoed everything that led up to it. Silence can't love, he can't chage & he can't give up his vendetta not for anything or anyone. He is 'handicapped' just as the Sheriff is handicapped by his own moral code.
The original ending was just like some kind of opposite to these typical annoying happy endings - it was just one of the best endings in the history of the cinema and the genre and adding that deep Morricone's sound, it was just sublime!
The actors were italians, frenchs, germans, americans... I think it was better to make a "post-synchronisasion" to don't have too ridiculous accent. In the italian and french version, it's Kinsky real voice. I never seen the UK and american one. Imagine a "cow-boy" speaking english with a french, italian or german accent....
It was more realistic in the original. They would have just shot him through the window the whole showdown business makes great myth, but it was seldom the case. Bushwacking is more effective.
That I will agree. Though they should have done it with some other character. Silence was pretty awesome to die. He is like Zatoichi: The Blind Samurai and The One Armed Swordsman. Mute, Blind and One Arm. Just me I guess.
i'll admit that the original ending was really bleak and depressing, but it was perfect for this type of movie. Obviously there was absolutely no love put into this ending by the filmaker or even the actors themselves.
I've read somewhere that this was the ending of the korean or japanese version of the movie. But as you see Sergio Leone did it intentionally in such a ridiculous way, that it can't be taken as serious.

Haha that's funny, all the bounty hunters suddenly started shooting like stormtroopers from Star Wars. Bad ending!

What was the thing with the metal glove? I do not get it.

The original ending is much better. Seeing Silenzio smile is kinda... funny. And the movie is NOT funny at all.

How come nobody was talking in this? I mean they moved there mouths but there was not a single word said!

It was shot with no sound, and since this ending was not used, it is highly unlikely that an English or Italian audio track exists for this ending.

Heh, since it seems this was made to be craptastic on purpose, I like to think they were having fun talking nonsense or something XD

Now leave only cigarretes and Silence.

I LOVED the original ending. The happy one's so sadly annoying..it would have been good for a tv movie not for such a masterpiece.

the original ending stupid??? are you crazy?? it's one of the most beautiful ending ever filmed! especially in a western movie...

No, Im not crazy. The original ending was nonsensical. Just because an ending is dark or downbeat doesnt make it good.
