How is it E locrian? That is totally unrelated to the key of C# Minor (E major) which is the key he's in...... E Locrian is the 7th mode of F. Modes are irrelevant anyway in this tune.

@jamesco89 How are modes irrelevant in this song when they are being used? Modes are always used, even if its the relative keys. The key change at 2 mins into the song, goes to A Harmonic minor. also uses a mode of Harmonic minor, the 7th to be specific. Its called Mixolydian #1 and starts on G#, ascends through to build up to the solo. C# Aeolian & D# Locrian are both equivalents. The @jmsatriani guy is high.

@justinhoman There is no key change (other than E - C#m from the intro), the solo part which you were referring to is still in the key of C# Minor but built off the 5th mode (G# phyrgian dominant) which contradicts what I said(!). Apart from that they are irrelevant because he isn't using them, he is starting C# minor on a different note, but landing on a primary note of the C# minor triad. If he was playing D# locrian as someone suggested, there would be m7b5 chords around. Which there isn't.

@1148bucknasty Technically yes it is the 7th mode of E major, but what was going on in his mind was the 6th mode of E major, which is C# minor. You can't say its two different modes at once. If you want to get even more technical, he starts on the 2nd note of the C#minor he stated he was ascending which is 1 step above the 6th being the 7th locrian. C#minor and E locrian are both correct. So Paul wasn't wrong in stating it as such =)

paul is definitely the most down to earth shredder, with a very colorful imagination. always has a humorous vibe, coupled with serious intent to create something new and exciting. I think its awesome he shares his technique and knowledge without being an arrogant "i'm the best" attitude, which set aside from his playing skill, is why he is regarded so highly. He should absolutely be in the Hall of Fame.

One of the best things about Paul is his choice of fingerings, whenever I work his stuff out by ear I end up with something much harder and less comfortable than he has for the same notes. I wonder if its natural or if he checks out each possible place?

Yeah its $9000, its a modified Ibanez Iceman, called the Ibanez Fireman, and only 50 have been made. Although i suppose if you knew a good wood worker or guitar maker ( i forgot their actual name) you could have one built similar for about 2-3k

Sweet vid, I'm having this DVD for Christmas. It's the only thing I've asked for, and I can't wait to watch it. Paul is such a fantastic teacher, a really down-to-earth guy...and he's alright at guitar too!
