DOSBox has built in capture functionality, use that and you won't get the wait cursor in the middle.

My first PC game along with Master of Orionand Star Control 2(the other favorites of mine). Which of the expansions featured the avain race?

That was the Wing Commander 1 expansion, Secret Missions 2.

It's been a very long time since I played this, but I can't remember the framerate being this bad!?
Id this how it plays, or has the capture software slowed the framerate?

It's part the capture software's fault and part that I didn't have DOSbox's cycles turned up high enough.
Well, thank christ for that! I had planned on digging this out, but I couldn't have lived with THAT framerate, lol :-D
