  • Awesome technique

  • I dont own a saturn but I am getting ready to change a water pump on a 2000 cavalier, nice trick with the pulley, I dont own an impact wrench or any other air tools so thanks alot for making this video.

  • Thank You, Brother.

  • I have a coolant leak on the passenger side of my Saturn. It only happens hours after the car has cooled down. Would this be the water pump ? I recently replaced the radiator. I thought it might be a air pocket but it has done this for 3 days now and I have been unable to see where it is leaking. Maybe the fan is not kicking on ?

  • @dakotarazzle It does sound like a bad water pump to me.

  • Since the guy I got the car from lied about everything I think I'll just replace the sensor/connector,the water pump and have the system flushed since I've already spent 400$ on parts!on the bright side it isn't as bad as it could have been I thought the engine had blown

  • I just bought the car a week ago so I don't know if its been changed but by the looks of it I would say nothings been changed

  • I have the temp gauge and if you look at it like a gas gauge it used to run at 1/4 tank now its at almost 1/2 tank if that makes sense

  • @dedski7 Sounds like you have a possible problem with the engine coolant temp sensor has it and the connector ever been changed.

  • The cap is in good condition and the fan is coming on at the right temp the car isn't overheating just running hotter then it should

  • My temp/radiator level light is on and the car is running slightly warm yet the fan works thermostat is new and waterpump shows no sign of failure should I change it anyway I'm stumped

  • @dedski7 Is the fan coming on when it should 226deg and what about the condition of the cap on the expansion tank which can lead to overheating.

  • I needed this. I spent all day tryin to do this. Thank you so much

  • Tighten half turn all screws, before unscrewing. Then it's easier

  • Worked like a charm, thanks for the help.

  • Why don't you loosen the bolts before removing the belt?

  • @richpin064 thanks man ur always there when i need u.

  • @richpin064 what are the signs of a bad belt, or when should u change it?

  • @omarG19100 signs of a bad belt are separation of the rubber on both sides of the core and separation or missing ribs.

  • Thanks Rich, your videos have taught me a ton. Your much appreciated.

  • @TJHassis I appreciated you watching my videos

  • Would you recommend form a gasket (black)to put on the new gasket on or put it on dry? thx Frank

  • @piratesbelay When replacing the water pump i like to use a little RTV on both surfaces.

  • @richpin06a I bought the red tube, only $2 more. Took the A/c compressor out of the way, my pulley bolts were real stubborn, found better ease from up top. I Miss the days when I had a helper !

Tomorrow, tackling the leaky trans seal..

thx for getting back to me, might have a question tom..frank

  • Whaaaaaattss loooove got to dooo, got to dooo with it! Whaaatts loooove, but a secondhand emotiooon!

  • @richpin064 i changed the pump. THANKS ALOT MAN.

  • Do u have a video on replacing the whole water pump for this car? my water pump is leaking and im bout to change it, but i need to know what size hex(tools) to have for the job.

  • your so awesome dude

  • @blessedubitch just trying help

  • @richpin06a now how would you go about getting those bolts off if they were stripped

  • @blessedubitch air chisel, cut off tool or sawzall would be my choice

  • cool

  • i woulda just left the belt on and loosed up the bolts on the water pump it woulda been much eaiser

  • I have the saturn 97 sc2 dohc 100k on it. For last 5 months I have to add 17oz of coolant every 2 months (700mi). Does that means the water pump is bed? Thanks for your videos!

  • @konradmtb It could be water pump ,hoses or even the radiator.

  • lemme tell ya rich! you make it look not hawd at all. lol!

i got in there and used your technique on the first two bolts but the third bolt was seized and wouldn't budge, had to drill and dremel it out.

    (this is pretty common apparently)

the pump was getting scrapped do to a bad bearing so damaging it was no concern.

I actually had to remove the TAM and loosen the dogbone on the subframe to get clearance to drill and cut, but i got the job done!

thanks so much for the videos!

  • I didn't see where the squashed pipe came into use. Protection from marauding zombies who might want to interfere?

  • @JohnMSawyer ... Between 2:13 and 2:19 the pipe is visible ... It is used as an extender for the wrench.

  • They should really design these FWD cars with a removable inner fender well. I just replaced a timing belt on a 2005 Chrysler Sebring convertable with 2.4L DOHC engine, and it was a real pain in the rear. Would have been a lot easier without the stupid wheel well right in the way, but then again that would be too smart.

  • @mrstrictlygm bring back the rear wheel cars

  • Stripped mine, so, I took the whole pump out, Prob have to grind the bolts off now fml..

  • I also sprayed WD-40 on the bolt re night before.

  • I tried this and it started rounding off the nuts. So I uses the crescent end and the same thing happened. Any ideas for a tool that would work? I used a 12 point and a six point sprocket. Neither worked.

  • I bought the GMB unit from AAP. IT came with a gasket (a very thin one) and it says "position new gaskets after coating them on both sides with sealer" Does this mean, in addition to the gasket I must use RTV, or just spread some of that gasket dressing they sell in packets at the counter for $1?

thanks RichPin, your videos are superb! A+

  • @mjoekingz28 Yes you can put some RTV sealer on the pump then put the gasket on the pump then wait 3 or 4 minutes. After that time put some sealer on the engine were the pump mates and then install the pump.

  • @richpin06a thanks

  • I need to drain the coolant before I do this right?

  • @Magevro Yes i would remove the block drain

  • hey... your video was very helpfull but i ran into a lil problem... i tryied to unscrew them with a 10m wrench and it kept slipping out and now i have bald bolts any idea on what i should do??

  • @411Ccastillo Using a 6 point socket should get them out.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. You really helped me out today!

  • in other words I have the three screws out and the pulley is loose but I can't pivot it off the shaft. Thanks for responding

  • Its stuck on the middle shaft of the pump and just won't come out

  • Hey Richpin. Ive got a saturn 2002 SL and I got the bolts off the pulleys but i cant get the pulley off the pump Ive finagled it just like you did. Any advice? Thanks for the videos theve helped me save alot of money.

  • @stevea2010 Is it stuck .

  • ummmm what was so hard about just leaving the belt on the pulley, and just breaking the bolts loose?........hmmm

  • @mstngsrule68

I just did this repair a few days ago on my own '95 SL2, and the pulley slipped against the belt even with the crankshaft pulley counter-wrenched... it took a lot of work to break those bolts with a pro-mechanic friend of mine.who used methods similar to those in this video.

  • Good tip about wedging the screwdriver.

  • Richpin, can you use the stock gasket that comes new with the water pump or do you recomend the RTV?

  • @studpuppy69 On an older engine you can get a rough and pitted surface were the pump mounts so i like to use both.

  • About to tackle this job but was wondering if anyone would shove a red hot poker into my eye as l think that would be more enjoyable than pump replacement ! ps thanks richpin

  • Count your blessing you are not working on say a ford escort were the pump is run by the timing belt.

  • @richpin06a Yes... I just did a Probe. Replaced the timing belt while I was in there. Much more involved than this one...which is what I am going to do tomorrow. Thanks for the video!

  • I don,t want to do this, I just had a manicure yesterday

  • Hey Rich (or anyone who has done this), do I have to drain the coolant in the radiator or block (or both) before attempting to perform this maintenance?

  • The block drain will be enough.

  • this looks eazy im not sure what series my saturn is so im having trouble fixing my pump. My pump is higher.

  • OK, I did this job yesterday, went on to change the pump. Pump easier tan pulley.

I ended-up using a metal file to hold the pulley as i had everything but the correct sized screwdriver.

The pulley bolts aren't overly tight, the file could handle no problem, so don't get stuck on the screwdriver thing if it ain't working for you, whatever works. Just don't wedge against the timing cover when you put pulley on again, frame only.

  • 2 of the water pumps bottom bolts can be worked with a socket and one at 4: o'clock can also be socket worked, 4:00 needs be a short socket. All I had was long, so the 10 mm box did most of my work. If tight-fit jobs are frustrating to you, got big hands etc. consider paying someone.

Tips: Spray all bolts in advance, like the night before if you can. Wear rubber gloves. Make sure you have the pipe/lever jig happening b/f you start, you'll need it for the pulley, not the pump though.

  • This looks like fun. Im loosing coolant, Im suspecting the water pump (75K) as the drips are under it.

    Looks like bloody knuckle time.

  • from experience w/ my 99 SC2, even leaving the belt on doesnt help taking the bolts out! And my belt was a goodyear gatorback, best belt you can buy, and it wouldnt grip the pully hard enough to loosen it!

  • crack the 3 bolts before take out the belt

  • what type of sealant is used for a water pump replacement

  • I have good success with Permatex High-Temp Red RTV

  • I was going to take my Saturn into the shop, but with the help of this video, I did it myself. Thank you Richpin06a

  • or PB BLASTER

  • opps I meant transmission oil. sorry

  • I would leave the belt on first then use the wrench and loosen the bolts, i would spray them with transmission, good video.

    Thanks

  • Great job, glad theres people out there to take the time to do this type of video with a different variety of vehicles.Especially the older ones. THANX!!!!
