If I ever have kids, they will learn by Khan Academy. Heck, I intend to review as much material as possible for my own needs. I have the same "swiss cheese education" problem Sal mentions.
As much attention as this is starting to get, Its still not nearly enough.
Theres been an inferno waiting to erupt in the alternative education field for decades now, and i believe this program is the spark that just lit it. Were talking not just about helping with math here.. but the potential for a global education initiative covering every conceivable subject, physics, architecture, biology, language, etc, available to everyone on earth, for free. This is the stuff that can change the world.
Come on! Can't you put the link to "TED talk" instead of just writing "TED talk should be watched before this one"? I've done a search on "TED talk" and a lot of results found! No idea which one is the "prequel" of this video!
It's truely amazing how much of an effect a good teacher can have. I mean everyone of his videos is filled with people thanking him. It's a rare sight to go onto a youtube video where people are so thankful and couteous.
My son was labeled "special needs" and while in traditional school ended up in a Title One math class in the fourth grade, continuing into the fifth.
Started homeschooling using the same texts and workbooks that would have been grade appropriate - the results were the same, he could not grasp the concepts.
Since, we have switched entirely to the Khan Academy - James now is doing algebra at an 8th grade level and best yet is he looks forward to his daily lessons.
If we connected the dots; the info from CR show on the brain's development + synapses + fluency development age + Salman's we have the solution the. Why are parents choosing to waste the summer time development? It really only taking minutes a day. This should be our first solution to address. I you search web their is plenty of support for "fluency", & "math foundation".
Sal Khan: The only man in California with the ability to give a virtual high using nothing but his voice and a magic color-changing pen. Rampant distribution in schools, night-long usage sessions, and worldwide acclaim for product- accomplished using only his closet. Truly the most badass dealer who has ever lived.
One of my guilty pleasures...visiting the Khan academy. Downloading movies or music doesn't really get on my conscience that much but getting a free but high quality education from an MIT, Harvard graduate..now that's sth else. In result, I pay more attention than I usually do during his teachings..being thankful, so to speak, if that makes any sense. Hope he recruits some language wizards in the near future to help me with my English, French, Chinese...etc. How can you not like this guy!! ^^
This should be in place across the country. Video lessons at home, reduced homework, and more interaction, instead of instruction, at school. Interaction between teacher/students and students/students - on concepts; rote repetition of problems does not teach as much as understanding the concepts of what the problems are all about. Especially if you give students the opportunity to teach others; teaching is such powerful tool for learning and integrating concepts.
OH MY GOD!!! its him, its freakin KHAN!!!! wow hahah nice to put a face to the voice thats taught me half the things i know about bio,chem,calc, stats,...need i say more...i think not!
I can't believe that any balanced human spends his intellectual energy on trying to put down this noble work.
Sal, It's not just the concept of videos that makes it work. It's you, your high understanding of what you are doing. And your ability to express to us the very philosophy behind every matter.
When I first saw Khan Academy many years ago I knew instantly it would be a huge success. If you wanted to learn these topics from a university it would take many decades and potentially cost millions. Thanks Sal, I will be donating to your organization in the future. Now if only we could close a few of the ridiculously expensive and notoriously ineffective brick and mortar schools, and use those resources for better things. Sal promotes integration, but many do not need a physical school.
@copperlight Salman Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education youtube.com/watch?v=nTFEUsudhfs&feature=related It was in my sidebar so I don't know what your problem is. but here you go.
My god... I've watched and studied so much with the Khan Academy videos that I literally feel an (alarmingly strong) urge to get my pen and writing block to take notes right now, watching this TED talk O.O I've conditioned myself to associate Sal's voice with studying XP I'm glad, though... Don't think I'm the only one :P
that natural high is very true Sal! Kids with internet connections these days can learn so much, if they manage to wade around all the crap trying to distract.
@Lojikish A teacher talks too much, books show pictures and text too much, he has the perfect balance of both. Although book learning works for me, and many people have different learning styles, his style of teaching is excellent. Once you've watched the video, you go to the exercises, and you are considered proficient once you've have gotten 10 right answers in a row. Stuck on an answer and you can show the steps, or return to the video without deduction.
Imagine a world where Khans videos had +500 million views and justin bieber had 249? This man is solid as bricks. I wish I can have the honor to shake his hand.
He's brilliant, if all knowledge would be in video then everyone would be able to educate himself as much as possible and at the right pace. Spread knowledge and love!
I think it's even more remarkable and courageous of Sal to do talks like these because he has a stutter. I've stuttered all my life and people who don't simply can not fathom how difficult speaking can be and how much conscious effort the simplest offhand comment can require. Non-stutterers take the ability to speak for granted. Kudos, Sal, you're an inspiration.

Versatile --> Sallu > Srk
Acting --> Sallu > Srk
Fans --> Sallu > Srk
And yet people think Srk is better..WTF?
Best thing about Salman is that he's not adamant and proudy like Srk.
Despite achieving tremendous amount of success, he still lives in one BHK because its closer to his parent's house..
Admire Salman not only as an actor but also as a human being!!
