To make a skiddish horse load into a trailer, the best method is to slowly and repeatedly tap his rear feet with a long crop. The irritation (no pain involved) makes the horse "escape" into the trailer.
we had to make sure the float was always closed cause my horse would get in, waiting to go on a ride! The most confident creature I've ever owned, although I did raise him from an 8mth old colt...used to walk into the house aswell :)

Smacking a horse just adds to the fear. The best way is to do this over a few days...let the horse just look inside the trailer, then put a tub of food just inside, then the next day, a little further in, until the horse is stepping in to eat. Don't force it, don't try to trap it, just give it time to learn!

As a horse owner who knows very well the frustration of trying to load an unwilling horse into the trailer, I understand what this guy was trying to do. It isn't animal abuse. I agree that it isn't the best way to make a horse load but he wasn't hurting the horse, he was annoying him. That is not the way to load a horse who doesn't load easily. You need to read some articles or horse training books to teach you the proper way to load that horse. You are actually creating more of an issue by smacking him with that crop.

In fact the only reason my 12 yo gelding overcame his huge fear of trailers is because I did not do this with him and his previous owners did (hence his halter-breaking fear of it)... and the reason I have gotten hard-to-get horses onto a trailer is because I have not done this to them. Not to mention there is absolutely no reward when he does take a step into the trailer.

Treatment of animals is in-part a learnt behaviour, weither through inexperience, incompetent teaching, misuse and misunderstanding of dominance or simply through neglect. Unfortunatley the young girl in this video clip is being taught (through those around her) that this method is an exceptable treatment to get the horse to "Behave". Teaching "to take the time it takes" doesn't always get through and people like this just don't listen. Hopefully someone shows these people there is a better way

usually when our horses dont want to trailer we dont kick them my dad and some other guy just take each other by the hand under the horse 's ass and lift it into the trailer LOL and it always goes great.

Let me guess, the horse does this every time you try to load him. This is why. If you had a clue about horses you would realize that this horse doesn't want to load because he gets whipped every time you load him. You need to give him a release when he takes a step up into the trailer, then continue.

heres a thought...dont have an 11 year old try to get a horse into a trailer. and maybe the lead rope shouldnt be dragging....that could easily scare the horse...and for dad~ if the horse is only getting even more scared when you crop him, MAYBE you shouldnt do that..just a thought

That is not the way to load a horse who doesn't load easily. You need to read some articles or horse training books to teach you the proper way to load that horse. You are actually creating more of an issue by smacking him with that crop.

going to list the main problems with this video:
-hitting the horse with the whip to get him into the trailer (because we all know that works...)
-the guy wearing tennis shoes and tall socks (come on grandpa its not 1950 anymore)
-the guy with the whip not getting kicked
-the little girl leading the horse at the end has the rope wrapped around her hand (not safe)
this family needs to invest in a new trainer because I know if my trainer saw any of her students do this she would kick there butt!

Indeed to what other people are saying... this is how I've been taught NOT how to load a horse. In fact the only reason my 12 yo gelding overcame his huge fear of trailers is because I did not do this with him and his previous owners did (hence his halter-breaking fear of it)... and the reason I have gotten hard-to-get horses onto a trailer is because I have not done this to them. Not to mention there is absolutely no reward when he does take a step into the trailer.

dude, EASE the horse on, don't whip him constantly. you don't actually touch the horse with the whip, you show it to him if you're gonna use that method... you ease the horse on, not whip him on, otherwise, he'll be too scared to get ON the trailer

Treatment of animals is in-part a learnt behaviour, weither through inexperience, incompetent teaching, misuse and misunderstanding of dominance or simply through neglect. Unfortunatley the young girl in this video clip is being taught (through those around her) that this method is an exceptable treatment to get the horse to "Behave". Teaching "to take the time it takes" doesn't always get through and people like this just don't listen. Hopefully someone shows these people there is a better way
