What a great music, it was old when i heard this for the first time in the 90`s. But became one of my favorite musics, for many reasons. I don`t knowe where all the good musicians gone...
Thijs Van Leer and the absent Jan Akkerman have made an important mark on contemporary music. I would say this group is of a handful that qualify as the actual best. In their early days they stood alone as Europe's (NL) answer to Rock while ABBA dominated Pop.
well...it is slower than old skin, I predict is too organized but the time, life passing through, the sound but more discipline through older and newer. This Focus is that, we give their sounds a proper meaning, do not be too much rudes. just go deep there. -not surprising at all, nice moment-
Ging even iets fout! Jan Akkerman speelt het naar mijn mening relaxter, nu klinkt het te gehaast!! Goede gitarist overigens echter Jan is niet voor niets ooit uitgeroepen tot beste van de wereld!
With a lot of older groups I prefer to listen to older material and older live footage, but Focus are the exception. I find myself coming back to these newer concerts. They are very good. Somehow, Pierre has gotten even better.
Saw these guys a few years back at Progday...actually got to shake Thijs's hand. Hard to believe it's the same guy looking at his face from the old pix...
Het is niet nodig om deze gitarist met Jan Akkerman te vergelijken ! Jan Akkerman is een van de beste !!! Deze gitarist is ook SÚPER ! This is the music of Focus, enjoy it like myself and millions more.
Ok it is not the Focus of old but the new lineup is amazing and they are a joy to watch and listen to.
I was in Holland a few weeks ago and it brought it all back, live at the rainbow, what an album. We like focus if you are not a fan please leave at the exit
Saw the old maestro Thijs Van Leer and the band last night in Cardiff for the first time since 1974! Excellent -they captured the attention of their audience for a whole 2 hours with their combined musical talent. Great to see Pierre van der Linden make the old Focus sound truly genuine. As for Thijs - what a brilliant eccentric!
I never saw them in the 70s but if a band still exists with Van Leer I'd be there. Have you got any idea if they plan UK gigs in 2010/2011. I can search online but you sound like an aficionado. Eruption is playing as I write this! Just how evocative is that piece of brilliance of many 'intimate' nights in the early 70s. Where did those days go....
@Waterlow56 I am not aware of any gigs in the immediate future but this band is very much alive and kicking - as in the 70s - but without Akkerman. Keep an eye out they are well worth a visit! In the meantime keep watching this clip - its identical to the live gig I saw
@killercrabman No, two of them. That's Pierre van der Linden on drums. Focus started falling apart in the 70s after he suddenly quit the day after they recorded the monster "Live at the Rainbow". It's great to see him back, as I've never heard another drummer who can play the "Focus" sound right.
i've been seventies rock mad for years, purple, sabbath, rainbow, genisis, zep etc and i've now found focus, awesome! recognised the tunes just didn't know the band! can anyone tell me who else i'm missing out on?
@SabbraCadabra ... and I bet you read the same book every day too. music is the universal language and is all about being different than the next guy. just imagine if there was only 1 band, 1 song, 1 version. what a truly boring world that would be. diverse yourself, you're missing so much in that little box you're in.
How can anybody consider watching people dance around and lip-synch to a recording on stage a concert when there are truely talented people like these guys going out on tour and playing REAL instruments!?
@fertriod3 And I have to disagree with you on that. While progressive rock definitely is much nearer music at it's purist form, there's a time and a place for almost every music. I'd much rather hear dance music on a saturday night in a bar, when I'm showing girls my best moves...
@tehhhhhd There's not bad music. Each human being has different artistic and musical preferences, I know. But I actually prefer progressive rock. Also, I don't know how to dance...
@fertriod3 thats like comparing lemons and apples... u wouldnt put an apple slice into your gintonic in the same way u wouldnt put a lemon slice in your cornflakes
@fertriod3 obviously if you like prog rock more than dance music, if it is your PREFERENCE. however believe it or not some like dance music more than prog rock and you never see them commenting "dance music is much better than prog rock" why do some fools turn in to elitists when they listen to a genre that doesnt sell as well as something popular.
@KbzAion i can listen to club music and i can listen to music done with "real" a.k.a. traditional instruments: rock, metal, jazz, funk. i am not coming here telling people how awful it is that someone makes music with something else then a guitar or a piano and that everything that is not made by those is automatically shit. thats just dumb. you can like anything you want to, please let others do that too.
@SFCBenny57 why do people have to keep comparing artists like this.. in 40 years ppl will be praising the lip syncers and hating on the new artists, jeez it gets so tiring. just enjoy what you enjoy ffs.
I saw these 2008 and I recommend anyone to go and see the new line up ,they are great, great rhythmn, great guitarist, and of course thijs on hammond and flute
Maaan it's the first time that I see this band ever... I'm shocked!!! How didn't I know them before??? This is the real music from rock the jazz, classic to bossa nova, blues to progressive... No more words...
@kingofskateop Maybe you were too young at that time. I was in senior high school and we all used to be overimpressed by this band in my school (Italy).
@ollie3 Actually I was a vitamin at the orange :D I learned all those progressive/jazz rock bands from my father and then by myself... King Crimson, Camel, Yes, Traffic, Mahavishnu Orch... more and more... But I was really surprised after I saw this video accidentally...
BravIsimo!!!! The drum solo is so tasteful and lyrical...just like the music. I do miss Jan on guitar. But his absence does not diminish the music one bit!!!!
Only real musicians have the ability and talent to play things like this that are on such an incredibly high level. Phonies like Lady GaGa that can only lyp-synch and hop around on a stage like a stripper having a seizure can't touch these guys!
@MFauske I totally agree with you! Most kids of my age listen to Lady GaGa and stuff, but i miss the passion for the music in their songs, something which is very present in bands like the ones you named.
Lady gaga does have passion. For money and fashion!! hehehehe!! Bands lke this one play not for money but for sharing what they feel. That's what artists do!

It's great to hear todays-songs like "NEVER MISS A BEAT" (Kaiser Chiefs)
What the today-bands (2010, I write) never seem to know is....
in the 70-ties...
NOT ONE SINGLE BEAT WAS MISSED,
but that was considered utter basics,.
We made no songs about that item, WE LIVED IT TRU AND TRU.
I STILL DO.

Maaan it's the first time that I see this band ever... I'm shocked!!! How didn't I know them before??? This is the real music from rock the jazz, classic to bossa nova, blues to progressive... No more words...
kingofskateop 1 year ago 2
@kingofskateop Maybe you were too young at that time. I was in senior high school and we all used to be overimpressed by this band in my school (Italy).
ollie3 1 year ago
@ollie3 Actually I was a vitamin at the orange :D I learned all those progressive/jazz rock bands from my father and then by myself... King Crimson, Camel, Yes, Traffic, Mahavishnu Orch... more and more... But I was really surprised after I saw this video accidentally...
kingofskateop 1 year ago
@kingofskateop I Agree. Please liste to "Black Oak Arkansas" as well. They are good too.

BravIsimo!!!! The drum solo is so tasteful and lyrical...just like the music. I do miss Jan on guitar. But his absence does not diminish the music one bit!!!!

Only the master, John Shuttleworth, is a more consummate keyboard artiste - ooof, Ken....

@gorkys6 agreed! And he can play on the top of a bus with his portable keyboard, you cant do that with a hammond!

Van Leer still showing his mastery of the Hammond B-3!

Only real musicians have the ability and talent to play things like this that are on such an incredibly high level. Phonies like Lady GaGa that can only lyp-synch and hop around on a stage like a stripper having a seizure can't touch these guys!
SFCBenny57 1 year ago
Yep! You're right!
Music to me is art. It is a pity that they do not make as good music as Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin.
MFauske 1 year ago
@MFauske I totally agree with you! Most kids of my age listen to Lady GaGa and stuff, but i miss the passion for the music in their songs, something which is very present in bands like the ones you named.
broekieking1 1 year ago
Lady gaga does have passion. For money and fashion!! hehehehe!! Bands lke this one play not for money but for sharing what they feel. That's what artists do!

Fantastic, long live prog! Unfortunately some people you don't have the taste and an advanced
mind to listen real music. "deinhaflores" you should stay with the lady gaga's sh*&@. Suit you best.
