@lwst82 A whole lot of things play a role...a body composition that is easy to move around helps a lot but a strong push-up as well as other body weight exercises should be incorperated reguarly. Strengthening your entire upperbody will aid in a strong dip.
@WeissCD Well, I'm 5'8 175 lbs. 15% body fat so not very good...but I try to do Squats, Bench, Chinups, and other compound exercises at the gym. Been trying to look at how gymnast's train. I can do maybe 5-8 chinups in a row on my first try. Should I attempt to do more push ups before I try dips? Or should I just try partial dips where I don't use the full range of motion?

@MrOdsplut I won't lie they are ridiculously strong. Still, gymanst out power them, especially if you factor in planches, iron crosses, and pretty much anything an olypmic gymnast can do on the rings.
@Aldind2x Hmmm...I think it is true that gymnast have greater upper body and probably also core strength (and more balanced strength as well - weightlifters only have good power and limit strength, while gymnasts have strength endurance as well). But the lower body strength of gymnasts is nothing special.
@MrOdsplut Yeah, I agree with you. Gymnasts do have abysmal lower body strength. However, their leg muscles have explosive power. What I have observed is that overall gymnasts are the best rounded athletes. I have yet to find a sport that has the same speed, control, power and flexibility. Sometimes, **all the time** I am jealous of gymnasts.
it looked like you dropped out you WANG at 0.13!

I can't even do one dip without weights. How do I get better at doing them? I don't want to resort to machines.

Try doing negative reps. You go to the station and lower yourself as slowly as you can. Should help your body adapt to the movement.
